The authorities concerned and leaders finally woke up from slumber and addressed the issue of garbage that had been piling up in the city for the past few days. MP Sushil Kumar Rinku today held a meeting with the contractors and MC Commissioner Gautam Jain in this regard. One of the contractors said around 2,000 tonnes of waste was accumulated in the city these days. Heaps of garbage could be spotted at various roads across the city. Residents, who are welcomed with garbage piling up on roads, have to bear foul smell emanating from the waste. As per information, the MC Commissioner has constituted a committee that will check the pending bills and the amount to be paid to the contractors. “Several meetings have been held with MC officials, but nothing has been done. We can’t execute work till we get approval,” said one of the contractors. The victim, identified as Jaswinder Singh, sustained critical burn injuries. He was shifted to the Civil Hospital. Owing to his critical condition, he was referred to the Jalandhar hospital. The police are investigating the matter. OC FIRE BREAKS OUT AT KIOSK, 1 HURT Phagwara: A youth suffered serious burn injuries after a fire broke out in his kiosk near Hanuman Garrhi temple on Sunday. The victim, identified as Baljit, has been admitted to the Civil Hospital here. Fire tenders took around 20 minutes to douse the flames. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. OC was stationed at the Focal Point police chowki where the victim first reported the matter, stated that the incident fell under the jurisdiction of the Maqsudan police station. He denied any wrongdoing on their part. He refuted claims of misconduct, citing the presence of CCTV cameras throughout the station. Those arrested have been identified as Balwant Kumar and Bimli Devi, both residents of Panki Palamau, Jharkhand. Sharing details, Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Sharma said security had been beefed up in the city to nab those involved in drug peddling. He said a team of the police was stationed near Lahroiya Gurdwara Sahib, 120 Feet Road, Surya Enclave, Jalandhar. “During patrolling, the police party observed two persons coming from the Qaji Cops show the seized opium during a press conference. In his complaint to the police, Joga Singh, former sarpanch of Rai Pur Arian village gram panchayat, said the suspects stole bricks, which were kept for development works, on the night of March 8. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered against the suspects. OC Jalandhar, March 18 Unidentified assailants attacked three migrant labourers in the Leather Complex area here late last night. The victims also alleged police misconduct when they went to report the incident. According to Rohit, a resident of Wariana and one of the victims, he, along with his wife, was heading towards their home when some men from a nearby factory made derogatory remarks against his wife. When he objected, the suspects assaulted him. When other migrant labourers intervened, the suspects attacked them with sharp weapons. The suspect fled the spot after the mishap. The injured persons were shifted to the Civil Hospital with the help of passersby. TRIBUNE PHOTO Vegetable, fruit vendors protest proposed rent hike Tribune News Service Jalandhar, March 18 Vegetable and fruit vendors gathered at Maqsudan Sabzi Mandi early this morning to protest against a possible surge in rent for their stalls. Initially, the vendors, along with arhtiyas, obstructed the main road of Maqsudan, and later shifted their demonstration to the main gate of the Sabzi Mandi, where their protest continued for nearly three hours. The bone of contention revolves around the Mandi Board’s intention to hand over the space, currently housing approximately 725 vendor stalls on contractual basis, to private entities. Vendors are vehemently opposing the move, fearing a threefold escalation in rent if the Mandi Board proceeds with its plan. Johnny, one of the Arhtiyas, informed that the current monthly rent of the vends is around Rs 3,000, cautioning that under the proposed plan, contractors could impose a daily fee, potentially raising costs from Rs 100 to Rs 300 per day. Follow model code of conduct strictly, DC asks political parties Tribune News Service Jalandhar, March 18 District Election Officer-cumDeputy Commissioner Vishesh Sarangal today asked representatives of all political parties to follow the model code of conduct in letter and spirit in the wake of the Lok Sabha elections and extend their full cooperation for successful conduct of the entire election process. The DC said the model code of conduct had come into force from March 16 after the announcement of the elections, which will remain in force till the completion of the election process. DEO Vishesh Sarangal and Senior Superintendent of Police Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar told the representatives of political parties that the notification for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha elections would be issued on May 7, after which the last date for filing of nominations would be May 14. Scrutiny of nominations would be done on May 15 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature would be May 17. The election process would be completed by June 6. He said the election expenditure incurred by each candidate from the day of filing of nomination papers to the day of declaration of results would be maintained on a daily basis. Apart from this, the expenditure of more than ~10,000 by each candidate will be incurred through cheque, demand draft and NEFT from the bank account opened by the candidate for election expenditure. It is mandatory for political parties and candidates to get pre-certification of the content of advertising done through print, electronic and social media for their election campaign from the districtlevel Media Certification and Monitoring Committee established at Room No. 14-A, District Administrative Complex. It is mandatory to obtain permission for vehicle and loudspeaker by submitting written information to the Assistant Returning Officer concerned.
