PAGE 10 New Delhi, February 13 Amid a bitter tussle for power between warring factions of the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi today advised Governor C Vidyasagar Rao to summon a special session of the Assembly to hold a composite floor test within a week to decide who enjoyed a majority — caretaker CM Panneerselvam or party general secretary VK Sasikala. He cited the 1998 precedent of a composite floor test in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly to decide the power tussle between Jagdambika Pal and Kalyan Singh in support of his advice. Amid the political uncertainty, all eyes will be on the Supreme Court, which is likely to pronounce its verdict in a disproportionate assets case against the AIADMK general secretary on Tuesday. A Bench headed by Justice PC Ghosh is expected to deliver at 10.30 am the verdict that has the potential to make or break Sasikala’s case for chief ministership of Tamil Nadu. A Bench of Justice Arun Mishra and Justice DY Chandrachud said it would be better if the transfer case was also dealt with by the sevenjudge Bench. As Justice Karnan failed to appear in the top court to answer the contempt notice, the SC gave him 25 days to respond and fixed March 10 for further hearing. PAGE 11 Tribune News Service New Delhi, February 13 The Election Commission today directed the district poll authorities covered under the first phase of Uttar Pradesh elections to “immediately file” FIRs against the management and editors of a Hindi daily and an agency for violating its directives pertaining to conducting and disseminating the results of exit poll and send compliance reports by evening. The official EC spokesperson said “compliance reports from districts have started coming in one by one”. He noted that all “FIRs would be filed by tonight” and “compliance reports would be received from all 15 districts where polling for the first phase took place on February 11”. The reports are being sent Tribune News Service New Delhi, February 13 The Supreme Court today cancelled the admission of 634 MBBS students who got through various medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh between 2008 and 2012 by illegal means. These students had cleared the entrance tests conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Vyavasayik Pareeksha Mandal (Vyapam) or MP Professional Examination Board. The order came from a three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice JS Khehar, which refused to give any relief to the students, who wanted the SC to exercise its discretionary powers under Article 142 to do complete justice. Earlier, a two-judge Bench had delivered a split verdict and the matter was ing her political ambitions. If convicted, she may not just have to serve a prison term but also become ineligible to contest polls for six years, commencing from the date on which the sentence gets over. Sasikala has been insisting that the Governor must invite her to form the government as she enjoys the support of a majority of AIADMK’s 134 MLAs. Tamil Nadu descended into a political turmoil following the death of CM J Jayalalithaa on December 5, 2016. Panneerselvam was sworn in as her successor. Jaya confidante Sasikala became AIADMK general secretary on December 29 and went on to be elected leader of the AIADMK Legislature Party on February 5.
