Blind murder case cracked, two nabbed Sukhpreet Singh ~7-cr modern pool will allow residents to continue practice throughout year Tribune News Service Mahesh Sharma Malerkotla, May 24 The police claimed to have solved the blind murder of a Kanganwal man, Harvinder Singh (45), whose body was found lying inside his house on Friday night. Two of his friends, who were identified in the case, were nabbed by the joint team of the Ahmedgarh police station and the CIA, Malerkotla, when they were trying to flee the area late on Saturday night. The suspects were identified as Mandeep Kala of Kanganwal and Sandeep Singh Bosco of Dasondha Singh Wala. SP Rajwinder Singh Randhawa said police officials, supervised by Ahmedgarh DSP Inderpal Chauhan, DSP (D) Sumit Sood, Sadar SHO Gurpreet Kaur and incharge, CIA, Harjinder Singh, had nabbed Kala and Bosco when they were trying to leave the area late on Saturday evening. Both of them were identified continued on page 2 Census duty: Act against 80 absent teachers, MC writes to DEO Ludhiana, May 24 Over six months after the completion of the much-publicised all-weather swimming pool near Rakh Bagh under the Smart City Mission, the facility is still awaiting public opening as the Municipal Corporation (MC) continues to struggle to finalise a contractor for its operation and maintenance. Built at a cost of around Rs 5.82 crore, which further revised to Rs 7 crore, the modern indoor swimming pool was promoted as a major sports infrastructure project that would allow residents and professional swimmers to continue practice throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions. However, despite the project being ready, swimmers and residents are still waiting for the facility to become operational. According to information, the MC does not want to run the pool on its own due to shortage of staff and maintenance-related issues. Officials are trying to hand over operations to a private contractor but the tendering process has been delayed for months. Three firms have reportedly shown interest in operating SE Sham Lal Gupta said efforts were being made to start the swimming pool in a few days. ASHWANI DHIMAN the pool but the civic body is still scrutinising documents submitted by bidders. Officials said certain shortcomings were found in the paperwork and additional documents had been sought from interested parties, delaying the finalisation process further. The delay has disappointed residents and swimming enthusiasts, especially students and sportspersons who were expecting access to the facility during winter season when the regular swimming pool remains closed. The all-weather pool has been equipped with modern facilities, including a filtration plan to maintain water quality and advanced machinery to regulate water temperature during different weather conditions. Officials said the pool had been designed as per Olympics standards with a length of 25 metres and width of 12.5 m. The fivelane pool has varying depth ranging from 4.5 feet to 6 feet. Residents said the project was announced with much enthusiasm under the Smart City Mission but the continued delay in functioning of the facility had defeated its pur- pose. Many questioned why such an expensive public project was lying unused despite being fully constructed. Superintending Engineer Sham Lal Gupta said the civic body was in the process of checking documents submitted by interested bidders and efforts were being made to start the pool within a few days. The prolonged delay has again highlighted the challenge of management of civic projects, where infrastructure is created but public access remains stuck in administrative procedures for months. Ludhiana, May 24 Acting strict against teachers of the Education Department not reporting for Census duty, the Municipal Corporation (MC), Ludhiana, has written to the District Education Officer (DEO), seeking stern against the 80 absent employees. In a letter written to the DEO (Secondary and Elementary), the corporation has recommended that the teachers not reporting for Census duty should be marked absent in their respective schools too. It has also been recommended that their salaries should be withheld till an NOC is issued by their Census officer concerned. MC officials said the Census was an important and timebound government task. In case of violation or any kind of negligence, departmental action will be initiated, for which the school head and employee concerned will be solely responsible. They said notices had also been issued in the past but a certain number of teachers had not reported for Census duty. Appealing that it is a national duty and teachers should report for the same, the officials said stern action would be taken against those who were still not reporting for Census duty. — TNS Women protect themselves from the scorching sun as intense heat continues to grip Ludhiana. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
