London, October 6 British street artist Banksy has stunned the art world with arguably his most audacious prank yet, self-destructing one of his best-known works moments after it fetched more than a million pounds at an auction here. ‘Girl with Balloon’ had just sold at Sotheby’s for 1,042,000 pounds (USD 1.4 million, 1.2 million euros) — a joint record for the maverick artist — when it unexpectedly passed through a shredder hidden in the frame. “It appears we just got Banksy-ed,” said Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s head of contemporary art for Europe. “The unexpected incident became instant art world folklore and certainly marks the first time in auction history that a work of art automatically shredded itself after coming under the hammer,” the auctioneers added. Banksy posted his own photo from midway through Banksy’s painting ‘Girl with Red Balloon’ is seen shredded after its sale at Sotheby’s auction in London. REUTERS the shredding on his Instagram page. The caption, imitating an auctioneer, read: “going, going, gone”. Sotheby’s did not disclose if it had prior knowledge of the stunt. Branczik said he was “not in on the ruse”. “We have talked with the successful purchaser who was surprised by the story,” the auctioneers said. “We are in discussion about next steps.” Banksy, a mysterious artist from Bristol, southwest England, has never confirmed his real identity. He rose to fame painting clandestine street murals, typically simple graffiti stencils with a sharp political point, all over the world. The artist’s head-turning work have repeatedly sold for hundreds of thousands of pounds. Prior to its shredding, the faux-gilt framed piece — spray paint and acrylic on canvas mounted on board — depicted a girl reaching out toward a bright red, heart-shaped balloon. — AFP Tribune News Service ASSEMBLY ELECTION 2018 New Delhi, October 6 The Election Commission on Saturday announced the dates for polls to elect the Assemblies in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram in what may be a virtual semifinal ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In a bid to outdo each other, the parties have given their all to turn the rallies into a show of strength. On the same day, the Sukhpal Khaira faction of the Aam Aadmi Party and radical leaders will lead a “Save the Panth” march from Kotkapura to Bargari in Faridkot district to express resentment over the incidents of sacrilege in Punjab. Faced with dissent, it will not augur well for the Akali Dal if its sulking Taksali leaders, such as Ranjit Singh Brahmpura and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, choose to skip the Patiala rally. But if the party succeeds in putting up a united show, it will boost the morale of party workers. Capt Amarinder Singh on Saturday met minister Tript Rajinder Bajwa to review arrangements for the rally at Killian Wali in the Lambi constituency, where he is expected to announce the further plan of action against the Akalis regarding the desecration issue. PPCC chief Sunil Jakhar emphasised: “The key agenda is taking the findings of the Ranjit Singh Commission to the home turf of the Badals.” The commission, set up by the Congress government in April 2017, probed the sacrilege incidents, including those in Burj Jawahar Singh Wala and Bargari, and the firing incidents at Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan in 2015.
