CHANDIGARH | MONDAY | 13 SEPTEMBER 2021 A docu-series soon on the legacy of Partap Brothers, who have been dedicated to Gurmat Sangeet for over four decades Gurnaaz Kaur T Going far and wide Akshay Kumar-starrer Bell Bottom, which had its theatrical release on August 19, is now all set to premiere on OTT. The film will be streaming on Amazon Prime on September 16. The action-packed racy thriller is bound to give nail-biting thrills. Bell Bottom to premiere on Amazon Prime on September 16 Inspired from the real-life hijacking events in the 80’s the story essays unparalleled courage of the unsung hero known by his code name – Bell Bottom. Akshay will be seen donning the hat of this undercover agent on a covert mission. Akshay says, “After getting the theatres going, it is time to take this story to more people, and what better way to do that than releasing Bell Bottom on Amazon Prime Video; with a reach of 240+ countries and territories, I am hoping this tale of an unsung hero reaches audiences far and wide.” HE Partap Brothers have been nothing short of an institution when it comes to the Indian classical music, especially Gurmat Sangeet. Over the years, the siblings – Davinder, Mohinder and Ravinder – have been credited with preserving and reviving the Puratan Gurmat Sangeet. They have amassed legions of fans across the globe and created a legacy that needs to be celebrated and cherished. It was this thought that prompted New York-based Kabir Partap, son of Mohinder Partap Singh, to conceptualise a documentary series chronicling the four-decade journey of his father and uncles. With the unfortunate demise of his father in February this year due to Covid, Kabir realised the scale of their music and how impactful it has been over the years. The documentary series is in the pre-production stage and Kabir Partap is leaving no stone unturned to make it a one-of-its-kind series that blends the best elements of documentary filmmaking – raw footage, intense reality moments and unique stories. The film will be in English and translated into Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu. For Kabir, the documentary is a love story. “This is a tale that will resonate with all of us, as it focuses on trials and tribulations of our daily lives — family struggles, political and social events that impact us personally, expectations Band of brothers Politics can wait for now National Award-winning actress Kangana Ranaut, who portrays the iconic politician J. Jayalalithaa in the trilingual biopic titled Thalaivii, says that even though she is a patriot, she has no immediate plan to join politics. Kangana was in conversation with radio jockey Raunac for his new YouTube show, #13raJawabNahi. During the conversation, while asked if she has any Kabir Partap from our closed ones that we struggle to meet and the fight between the old and the new,” he quips. Ravinder Partap hopes that the documentary will inspire the audience to carry forward and preserve the rich treasures of the classical Gurmat Sangeet. “We hope that after having seen the film, the new generation with keen interest in classical kirtan will reach out to us with questions. The Davinder Pratap Singh, Mohinder Pratap Singh and Ravinder Pratap Singh youth must know that we are a resource for them,” he says. For Davinder Partap, the documentary is a medium to relive the moments spent with Mohinder Partap, who, in his words, “brought a very unique element of artistry in tabla”. “Mohinder had his own presence on stage, his own energy and flair. We will never be complete without him, but we will try our best to make him proud every time we perform on stage,” says Davinder Partap with his voice cracking. What kept the three brothers going for more than four decades? “The passion for Gurmat Sangeet,” Ravinder says and adds “when we are performing together a spiritual, transcendental bond is created. This bond transcends worldly relationships”. Probe the brothers about the difficulties in keeping the classical/traditional music alive today, Davinder Partap admits that there are a myriad of barriers to enter the arena, but he remains hopeful. “My greatest hope is that parents in our community will encourage their children to pursue Gurmat Sangeet. We, as a community, must encourage and support creativeness and artists,” he says. Davinder’s hope stems from the resurgence of interest in clas- sical music globally, especially the Puratan Gurmat Sangeet. Ravinder, the youngest of the Partap Brothers, nods in unison and adds, “A lot has changed in the past few years. For example, social media and streaming platforms have brought together fans of classical music from around the globe. The younger generation has especially taken a keen interest in reviving the Indian classical music.” NET, FLICKS & MORE An engaging battleground Kangana Ranaut says she doesn’t plan to join politics ‘just now’ ambition to join politics, Kangana said, “I currently have no such plans. I strongly believe that without working on the ground level one cannot win even a Gram Panchayat election. People can see through you. For entering politics, one needs to make genuine investments in people. If people wish, I can think about it. If you see, long after she’s gone people still love Jaya Maa as she connected with the masses and helped them in all ways possible.”—IANS MUMBAI DIARIES 26/11 Wandavision The Queen’s Gambit WandaVision wins first Emmy for Marvel Studios While the wait is on for the Primetime Emmys, the Creative Arts Emmys took place on September 11 as the winners were announced for the honours celebrating outstanding artistic and technical achievements. Cast: Konkona Sen Sharma, Mohit Raina, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Natasha Bharadwaj, Tina Desai, Prakash Belawadi Director: Nikkhil Advani & Nikhil Gonsalves Rating: Gurnaaz Kaur The recreation of the horrors of Mumbai terror attacks on November 26, 2008, has been attempted many times. So, it's natural to think that that central theme of the eight-part series—Mumbai Diaries 26/11- streaming on Amazon Prime, is the ghastly events of coordinated shooting and bombing attacks across Mumbai. Those four nights are why this story is, but the directors have weaved it from the point of view of a government hospital that's low on resources. Having said that, we can't call it just a medical drama as the makers have incorporated a fair share of action around cops, terrorists and media when the hospital turns into a battleground. In its very first episode, we are introduced to all the main characters and even the supporting casts. Be it the maverick trauma surgeon Kaushik Oberoi (Mohit Raina), Konkana as the social service director or Tina Desai as Ananya (Kaushik's wife), for that matter the nurses and ward boys, the annoying cop Mayank Bhat and of course Dr Subramaniam as the CMO. Visuals of the buzzing Leopold Café, The Palace Hotel and the Metro Cinema heighten the tension that ensues in the coming episodes. Back stories of almost all char- acters too are splashed around in the narrative at the pauses from the chaos and tension of the bloody action. The series grips your attention and that doesn't change till the end. But in parts it also tires you because you feel there is too much packed in it. The multi-layered thriller in its fast-paced action also manages to throw in reference of caste bias, sexism, Islamophobia- all in a subtle tone. Beyond terrorism and national conflicts, the takehome remains that humanity has the strength to overcome every challenge- like it did back in 2008 and countless other times.
