Mohan Inder Singh of Phase 9 said Balwinder Singh Sodhi of Khanna had bought used machinery from him. On Friday, a dispute arose over a payment of about ~22.50 lakh, following which Sodhi took away more machinery at gunpoint and also attacked him and his workers. TRIBUNE PHOTO: PRADEEP TEWARI Criminal nabbed with 3 pistols, 10 rounds Mohali, May 8 Thwarting a major targeted killing, the police arrested a notorious criminal, Gurinder Singh, alias Guri Shera, of Sindhwan village in Fathegarh Sahib, from the Nadiala chowk in Kharar yesterday. The police recovered two .30-caliber pistols and one .32caliber pistol along with 10 cartridges from his possession. Gurinder has been booked in six cases, including those of extortion, Arms Act, snatching and dacoity, in the state. A case was registered under sections 25 (7) & (8) of the Arms Act at the City Kharar police station on April 30. — TNS Chandigarh, May 8 Chandigarh has the highest percentage (67%) of men having high waist-to-hip ratio in the country that puts them at a substantially increased risk of metabolic complications, according to National Family Health Survey-5. For the first time, the National Family Health Survey-5 (2019-2021) measured the waist circumference and hip circumference of women and men aged from 15 to 49 years. This information was used to calculate the waistto-hip ratio (WHR). The ratio helps identify the distribution of body fat and predicts abdominal obesity. People who carry more weight around their middle than their hips may be at a higher risk of developing certain health conditions. Abdominal obesity is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus, myocardial infarction, stroke and premature death. There were 72,000 beneficiaries in this target group. Around 60 per cent children have also taken second dose of Covaxin. UT Health Secretary Yashpal Garg said, “Chandigarh has achieved another milestone with Covid vaccination of 100 per cent targeted population of 15 years and above. This could be possible because of the coordinated efforts of the dedicated staff of the health and education departments. We will achieve the 100 per cent vaccination target in the group 12 years and above in the next few weeks.” The Corbevax vaccination for children in the age group 12-14 years with the first dose stands at 68 per cent. In order to protect unvaccinated children from exposure to Covid, the Administration had decided to bar unvaccinated students in the age group 12-18 years from attending classes in the physical mode. However, the order was revoked a couple of days ago. A case under sections 186, 294, 353, 354, 506 and 509 of the IPC has been registered against Kalson at the Sector 7 police station on a complaint lodged by a staff nurse. The staff nurse, in her complaint to the police, has stated that Kalson visited a woman patient at the deaddiction centre of the Civil Hospital in an inebriated state. The directions came after the president of the Shivalik Vikas Manch, Vijay Bansal, served a legal notice on the authorities concerned on April 13 demanding that the rail traffic on the Chandigarh-Kalka track be stopped so that two railway underpasses could be constructed to complete the bypass. Bansal said the trains coming towards Kalka railway station needed to be stopped for a week and their routes shifted to Chandimandir station or some other option should be worked out. He said the construction of both railway underpasses on the bypass cannot be carried out due to the movement of trains and the people were not able to take advantage of this bypass built at a cost of about ~90 crore. He said in 2007, then HUDA had acquired 232 acres of land for constructing the bypass and he had demanded that the NHAI should construct the road and there should be no toll plaza on the bypass. He has been identified as Gurbachan Singh of Yamunanagar. He was a driver and was living as a tenant in Baldev Nagar of Ambala. The deceased’s father has accused Gurdeep Singh and his friends of murdering Gurbachan Singh. There has been an Continued on page 2 EX-MC EMPLOYEE’S MURDER Police recreate crime scene Chandigarh, May 8 A day after a 42-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly strangling a former MC employee; the UT police, along with the suspect, recreated the crime scene today. Shallu a resident of Sunny Enclave, Kharar, who was in an extramarital relation with victim Chander Pal (40) of Sector 41, was arrested immediately after the post-mortem report revealed that the latter was strangled. He was murdered on May 2 and the woman was booked by the police on May 7. The suspect was taken to the crime spot to reconstruct the crime scene. The police want to determine the sequence of events that occurred during and after the crime. Police sources said the suspect made the victim consume liquor after which she committed the crime. The victim was a former tubewell operator of the MC, while the suspect is a divorcee. — TNS
