For the first time, the National Family Health Survey-5 (2019-2021) measured the waist circumference and hip circumference of women and men aged from 15 to 49 years. This information was used to calculate the waistto-hip ratio (WHR). The ratio helps identify the distribution of body fat and predicts abdominal obesity. People who carry more weight around their middle than their hips may be at a higher risk of developing certain health conditions. Abdominal obesity is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus, myocardial infarction, stroke and premature death. Dr Sonu Goel from the Department of Community Medicine, PGIMER, who WHAT IS WAIST-TO-HIP RATIO The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is calculated by dividing the waist measurement by the hip measurement. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a healthy WHR is 0.9 or less in men and 0.85 or less in women. FINDINGS ON WHR CHANDIGARH PUNJAB DELHI LADAKH J&K HARYANA HP has been working on trans fat-rich food consumption pattern in Punjab, said, “Generally, the waist-tohip ratio is higher among females than males. We are currently implementing the National Clean Air Plan.
