Owner of the shop Raj Kumar said on Wednesday night, he locked the shop and early on Thursday morning, he received a call from nearby shopkeepers who informed him about the theft. “I reached the spot and found that thieves broke open the lock of the main shutter and ransacked the entire shop. As per an estimate, the miscreants took away electronic goods worth over Rs 5 lakh and Rs 40,000 in cash” he said. TNS TRADER THROWS BOILING OIL ON WIFE Ludhiana: A man threw boiling cooking oil on his wife at her residence in Vikas Nagar, Dugri. The Dugri police yesterday registered a case against Ajay Pal, an auto spare parts trader from Sarabha Nagar. The victim, Simranpreet, who is undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital, said she got married to Ajay about four years ago. After one year of their marriage, she gave birth to a girl child. Since her in-laws and husband wanted a boy, they started torturing her. Due to the harassment, she recently left her in-laws’ house and started staying at Vikas Nagar with her three-year-old daughter. On Wednesday evening, when she was cooking in the kitchen, her husband reached the place and attacked her. He took boiling cooking oil and threw on her. Afterwards, he fled the spot. TNS 2 NABBED WITH ILLEGAL ARMS Raikot: The CIA wing of the Ludhiana (Rural) police claimed to have arrested two miscreants and recovered a .315 bore illegal pistol and three live cartridges from their possession. The suspects were identified as Lovpreet Singh, alias Lavi, of Kalyan village and Hardeep Singh, alias Nikka, of Raikot. The SSP, Ludhiana (Rural), Deepak Hilori, said the police had apprehended the suspects when they were waiting for their probable targets at the bus stand in Binjal village on Raikot-Jagraon Road on Wednesday. A .315 bore pistol and three live cartridges were recovered from them. After receiving a complaint from the girl’s mother, the police yesterday registered a kidnapping case and arrested Dev Raj of Dhandra. She said on May 25, when her daughter was going to school, the suspect tried to kidnap her. It was only when she raised an alarm, people gathered on the spot and the accused fled. Punjab Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal today reiterated his government’s firm commitment to get the government land free from illegal possessions regardless of any person, howsoever influential he may be. The minister stated this while interacting with mediapersons after getting freed around 195 acres of land from illegal occupation in Talwandi Nauabad, Walipur Khurd and Walipur Kalan in the Sidhwan Bet area of Ludhiana. He was accompanied by MLAs Sarvjit Kaur Manuke and Hardeep Singh Mundian, Director, Rural Development and Panchayat, Punjab, Gurpreet Singh Khaira, ADC (Rural Development) Amit Kumar Panchal, DDPO Sanjeev Kumar, besides others. A total of 1,09,935 persons have tested positive for the virus since March 2020 while 2,280 persons from the district have succumbed to the virus so far. The recovery rate of Covid19 patients was 97.91 per cent today. There were 13 active cases in the district and they were asked to isolate themselves at their homes by the Health Department. Till date, a total of 35,81,834 samples have been taken, of which 34,57,132 were found negative. Samples of 3,211 suspected patients were sent for testing today, the results of which are expected shortly. While 91 accident-prone points, popularly known as black spots, have been identified in the Police Commissionerate limits, 27 were found in Khanna police district and another 13 black spots were established in Ludhiana Rural police district, falling under the administrative district of Ludhiana, the official data has revealed. The development assumes significance as a total of 798 black spots were identified in Punjab, of which the maximum of 16.42 per cent existed in Ludhiana district alone. The figures were released in the report, ‘Accident black spot identification and rectification programme on various highways/roads of Punjab – 2021’ unveiled by Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar on Wednesday. The report, which was second in the series, prepared by the Transport Department in collaboration with the Punjab Police and Safety Alliance for Everyone (SAFE) Society under the ‘Safe Punjab Programme’, a copy of which is available with The Tribune, mentioned that 391 accidental black spots were identified in 14 police districts of the state during the first part of the report while another 407 black spots were found in another 16 police districts of the state during the second part of the report. Ludhiana, May 26 A surprise checking in Central Jail by jail staff led to the recovery of 17 mobile phones. Of these, five cell phones were recovered from three jail inmates while the remaining were found abandoned inside the jail. The police have registered a case against the three jail inmates, Shiv Shankar, Charanjit Singh and Sahil Jindal. Assistant Jail Superintendent Sukhpal Singh said on May 24, jail staff carried out a surprise checking inside the jail, all barracks and belongings of inmates were frisked by the police. During the exercise, five mobile phones were recovered from belongings of the three inmates while 12 phones were found lying near the barracks. The police officials had also recovered chewable tobacco from the barracks. A case under the Prison Act was registered. The jail authorities have also launched a probe to inquire about the connivance of the jail staff with the inmates in providing cell phones inside the jail. The Jail Department has been regularly recovering cell phones from the inmates but in most of the cases, the department or the police had failed to trace the source through which the inmates had been provided phones. — TNS
