FORECAST MAINLY CLEAR SKY INBRIEF MAN CONSUMES POISON, DIES Hoshiarpur: Disturbed by the harassment of the relatives of a woman friend, a young man ended his life by consuming poisonous substance on Saturday. Surinder Kaur, wife of Rajinder Kumar of Lahli Kalan village, told the police that her son Hardeep Sidhu (27), alias Happy, had friendship with a girl of the village. About three months ago, the family members of the girl attacked her son and injured him seriously. Due to the mediation of some people, they had a compromise. But after this, the girl’s family used to threaten her son and mentally disturbe him by threatening him to kill due to which her son consumed some poisonous substance. He was taken to the Hoshiarpur Civil Hospital, where he died. The police has started investigations. OC THREE ARRESTED WITH INTOXICANTS Hoshiarpur: The district police have arrested three smugglers, including a woman, and seized intoxicants from different places during last 24 hours. Model Town police arrested a smuggler and seized 8 gram of heroin from him during a naka in the area. Mehtiana police seized 20 gram of narcotic substance from a woman named Neelam Kaur, alias Soma, a resident of Harta village. Also, Bullowal’s police have arrested Gurpreet Singh, alias Raju, a resident Alowal and seized 20 gram of intoxicants from him. Separate cases under the NDPS Act have been registered . OC ONE BOOKED FOR ABDUCTING MINOR Hoshiarpur: Garhshankar police have registered a case against Jaspreet Singh, alias Jassi, a resident of Laliyan village, for allegedly luring a minor girl on the pretext of marriage. According to the information, a resident of Garhshankar has lodged a complaint with the police. He told the police that his minor daughter was lured away on the pretext of getting married by Jaspreet Singh. The police have registered a case and started search for the girl. OC MAN KILLED IN ROAD ACCIDENT Hoshiarpur: A man was killed in an accident after being hit by an unidentified vehicle on Saturday. Tanda police have registered a case against an unidentified driver. Gurpreet Lal, a resident of Ohadpur village, told the police that his son was coming on a two wheeler when an unidentified vehicle hit him near the village. Due to which his son Surjit Singh was severely injured and later he died. OC COVID: NO FRESH CASE IN DISTRICT Jalandhar: No new case of Covid was reported in Jalandhar on Sunday. The tally remained at 78,420. A total of 76,823 persons have recovered from the disease while the number of active cases in Jalandhar is 18. The district toll also remained same at 1,578. Meanwhile, two new cases were reported in Kapurthala on Sunday. The district tally increased to 23,912. The new cases in Kapurthala include a 45-year-old man of Begowal and a 57-yearold man of Kapurthala city. Around six to seven incidents of firing have taken place in the district in the recent past. Besides cases of murder, attack, suicide, theft and snatching are becoming common and being reported on a daily basis. The residents said earlier snatchers used to target people in deserted places but now they seem to have become more ‘confident’. “They easily take away gold earrings or chains from women standing outside their houses in posh localities or even if they are in crowded markets,” said Kamaljot, a teacher in a private school here. They say their prime need is diesel. As per environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal, villagers are mobilising their resources for the “kar sewa” and the government had provided clearance for the same. The environmentalist also raised concern over the limited time period saying that it’s a race against time to clean the area under the bridge in mere 20 days. Work to remove silt and sand from the legs/pillars of ■ In the past two years, massive mobilisation of farmers ensured tonnes of soil being picked up from under the bridge with the help of hundreds of tippers and tractor-trailers ■ On a single day, 100 to 150 vehicles were pressed into service for the same. Many villages also collected lakhs of rupees to raise the bundhs and desilt the bridge. ■ Khalsa Aid provided 1.5 lakh litres of fuel for operating these vehicles. Many NRIs also pitched in. Cheered by the secretary’s visit, villagers said while they were looking forward to government’s support, the work needs massive transport and resources mobilisation. Seechewal said: “We are thankful for the Water Resources Department Secretary’s visit. It’s an uphill task to be completed in 20 days, but 45 tractor-trailers have already been press into service.”
