OC TWO BOOKED FOR DOWRY DEMAND Hoshiarpur: The Garhshankar police booked two persons on the charge of dowry demand on Thursday. Bhamiyan village resident Silki, lodged a complaint with the police against the accused, including her husband. She told the police that she was married to Sukhwinder Singh of Bajwara Kalan. She alleged that her husband used to harass her for demanding more dowry. When the demand was not fulfilled, he allegedly started harassing her mentally and physically. The police have registered a case against the accused husband and another person Satnam Singh of Bajwara Kalan. OC 19-YEAR-OLD BOY GETS PACEMAKER Nawanshahr: A pacemaker was implanted in a 19-year-old boy, who was suffering from recurrent syncope, a rhythm abnormality of the heart, at a Nawanshahr hospital recently. The boy travelled from Canada to get treated here. The consultant cardiologist said the boy was diagnosed with a rhythm abnormality of heart and was found to have low pulse rate and heart block. He underwent conduction system pacing — a technique in which pacemaker lead is fixed to the left bundle of the heart. The technique prevents development of heart dysfunction (weak heart) which can develop over a long time in case of normal pacemaker implantation, said the doctor. Recurrent syncope refers to a diverse group of conditions where the autonomic nervous system suddenly fails to maintain either the blood pressure or heart rate resulting in insufficient cerebral perfusion and loss of consciousness. Failure of LED project was one of the most talked about issues at the General House meeting that was held last week at Red Cross Bhawan. When every councillor started raising the same issue, Mayor Jagdish Raja decided that a special meeting would be held on the same, where focus would remain on LED lights. A prior meeting in this regard was held on Thursday, i.e. June 16, wherein certain questions related to the project were asked to the in-charge of LED street lights, but it is reported that he could not give ‘satisfactory’ reply. There is an environment of mistrust among people and councillors regarding the project. The meeting will be held on June 20 and a letter in this 72,OOO LED STREET LIGHTS INSTALLED IN CITY, CLAIMS FIRM ■ As per the claims of the company, above 72,000 street lights have been installed in all 80 wards in the city, while councillors said this was a lie and they needed a proof ■ Mayor Jagdish Raja said: “The project was given to the company in August, 2020, and it was bound to get completed in a year. A detailed report would 4 held for kidnapping Ldh car dealer Had demanded ~9.5 lakh as ransom from victim’s family Tribune News Service Jalandhar, June 17 The city police on Friday nabbed four persons on the charges of kidnapping a car dealer from Ludhiana’s Haibowal locality and demanding a ransom of Rs 9.5 lakh from victim’s family. The incident had occurred on Thursday evening. The suspects have been identified as Manjeet Singh (42) of Kailash Nagar, Chamkaur Singh (29) of Subash Nagar, Bhajan Singh of Bhaura Colony, Ludhiana and Rahul (21) of Madhuban Colony, Jalandhar. The victim, Kulwinder Singh (30) of Hakikat Nagar, Ludhiana, a car dealer, has also been safely rescued by a police party of CIA staff-II, Jalandhar. Speeding car knocks 1 dead Jalandhar, June 17 In yet another case of rash driving, a man died after his scooter was hit by a car. The deceased has been identified as Tarsem Singh of Nawanshahr. On the complaint of Sumanpreet Singh, a case under Sections 279, 304, 337, 338, and 427 of the IPC was registered against a Balachaur driver, who fled the spot. Suman was going with his paternal uncle on his scooter when the incident happened. “We were going towards our fields. Our speed was slow when a speedy car coming from Rahon side hit our scooter and we fell down. The driver fled the spot. We suffered injuries and the passersby took us to a hospital. Suffering from polio, she has not just won the Dubai International Powerlifting Championship but has also qualified for the US World Heavyweight Powerlifting Championship this year in the 90 kg-plus category. Besides, she has also won the Strongest Women Trophy at the Dubai event which was held on June 11-12. Returning to her place yesterday, Ramandeep Kaur shared: “I am super excited after having made a mark yet again. There were over 100 participants from eight countries. The victory has once again filled me with a huge sense of pride and confidence. I am completely charged up once again to perform all the more better in the championships to come.” Saying that her morale was up again, she recalled that the last few years had been extremely tough for her. “After winning in Commonwealth Games, I kept trying for the job of a coach running around the political leaders but they said that there was no policy for the para players in the game. I applied for all government jobs in sports, disability as well as SC quota but was not considered despite my achievements. It was very demoralising for me and my financial condition had gone for a toss. To add to it, all national and international events remained suspended due to Covid and there was no platform for me to perform anywhere,” she shared. Ramandeep had also started a small shop at her place where she was selling sweets and biscuits to make an income. Hailing from Ghorewahi village in Bhogpur, she said: “The biggest setback for me was when in April 2020 when I lost my three-month old baby boy due to some disease. It took me months to recover from the shock. A year back, I was blessed with a baby girl. There remained a huge gap in the game which I had to cover before this event. But with God’s grace, I finally managed to grab the coveted gold medal once again”. Children with special needs are learning a lot during the summer camp that was started last week and has been going successfully in the district. The Chaanan Association for MR Children, an organisation that works for such children, has been organising summer camps for years. The centre running in Jalandhar is filled with laughter, excitement of these kids as they are learning something new everyday and then they also express their happiness to their parents regarding the same. Yoga has been helping them in calming their mind and soul and make them energetic for the entire day. The tradition to start summer camps started in 2017. The children loved it, they ENERGY FOR SOULS The Chaanan Association for MR Children, an organisation that works for special children, has been organising summer workshops for them in Jalandhar since 2017. For last two years, just like everyone, special children also remained in their homes and were confined but unlike others, they suffered a lot and much more. The office-bearers of the association have left no stone unturned in arranging good teachers for certain activities for these kids. Like, to teach them dance, Manpreet from dance factory, an academy has been roped in who will make these children learn various dance forms. Interestingly, some parents are teaching the children making bhel puri, sandwiches and several beverages in which no fire is needed. Manish Aggarwal, general secretary of the association, said last two years were toughest. “Bahut nuksan hua hamare bacho ka, aage badhne ki bajaaye peeche ho gaye (instead of growing, we’ve seen decline among these kids),” he said.
