In a statement issued here, CPI leaders DP Maur, Dr Arun Mitra, Gulzar Goria, Ramesh Ratan, Chamkaur Singh, MS Bhatia and Vijay Kumar said the project would prove fatal in the flood-prone area. They pointed out that leaders of the Bhagwant Mann-led government, who had earlier opposed the project, took votes from people in the belief that they would not allow the industrial project to take off when they come to power. People of the area near the forest and the river now felt cheated. “The government should ensure that such projects can be set up in places that have already been acquired for setting up focal points. The forest cover in Punjab is already small i.e. less than 4 per cent, whereas 33 per cent area is required for ecological balance,” they said. The leaders said this project would be further detrimental to the environment. DP Maur, district secretary of the party, said they were not against setting up of the industry in Punjab. But they oppose an industry that would pollute water and the environment. CPI leader MS Bhatia said when they met the residents of Sekhowal village, they told us that the gram sabha had rejected the resolution to set up an industrial park in the panchayat land, but their voices were ignored by the government. Notably, the public action committee (PAC) is running the “Mattewara Chalo” campaign to save the forests, wildlife and floodplains of the Sutlej. People are being appealed to reach Gurdwara Sahib on the Sutlej banks near Mattewara forest on July 10 against the proposed textile park.
