The man has been identified as Nirmal Singh of Ismailpur village. A case has been registered under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act at the Lohian police station. An investigation is under way. Notably, two cases were earlier registered against the accused, one under the NDPS Act in February 2019, and the other one under the Excise Act in 2014. Addressing the gathering, women leaders encouraged the youth and women to stand shoulder to shoulder with the farmers. They said today they had held a massive protest in support of the farmers, if needed they, too, would stay put at the protest. The women leaders said the demands of farmers, including implementation of the Swaminathan report, compensation for handling paddy straw, stopping auction of panchayat land with cultivators, cancellation of FIRs registered against farmers for burning stubble, land acquisition for highways at four times the market rate, provision of better canal system and rejection of pre-paid power meter system, must be fulfilled. Besides, the corporate houses responsible for polluting the water should be severely punished. According to the information, a married woman of a village in Talwara lodged a complaint with the police that Sandeep Kumar, alias Tinku, a resident of Bhandiyara, called her to his house on some pretext. He served her eatables laced with some intoxicating substance. As she fainted, the accused took her to a hotel and raped her. Next day, he left her near a religious place in the village. Grewal said the demands should be met at the earliest. “The demands that can be dealt at the local level should be looked into immediately,” he said. — TNS Jalandhar, December 1 Acting on the complaint filed by Ravi Pal, a Home Guards volunteer, whose video of being thrashed by some unidentified persons had gone viral, the police party of Division Number 4, on Thursday arrested two brothers in this connection. The accused have been identified as Guriqbal Singh, alias Gora and Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, residents of Laddhewali here. Police officials informed that Ravi Pal and ASI Dalbir Singh were on duty outside the emergency ward at the Civil Hospital on Monday when Guriqbal, Gurpreet and two other boys came to the hospital along with an injured person for treatment. They said the boys were forcefully trying to enter the doctor’s room, and when they were stopped by Ravi Pal, they started beating him up. They said the other two boys involved in the case had been identified as Manjit Singh and Paramjit Singh. They were yet to be arrested. “A case under sections 353, 186, 34 of the IPC has been registered against the accused, and the efforts are on to nab the absconding accused,” they added. — TNS Phagwara, December 1 Cabinet Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer on Thursday said the Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, would ensure the use of treated water from STPs having a capacity of 2,600 MLD for irrigation purposes to save the fast-depleting groundwater across the state. Meet Hayer, who also holds the Department of Environment, Science and Technology, visited the STP , Phagwara, to review the method of using treated water for irrigation on more than 1000 acres by farmers nearby villagers. Notably, the water treated by the STP at Phagwara having a capacity of 28 MLD, is being used for irrigation on 1,000 acres by farmers with the help of an 11-km long pipeline laid by SAYS MOVE CRITICAL TO SAVE FAST-DEPLETING GROUNDWATER the Water Conservation Department. With this method, nearly 7,500 million liters of underground water have been saved. Hailing the efforts of PPCB, Sewerage Board and Water Conservation and Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, the minister asked them to work in unison for chalking out a comprehensive plan to use the treated water for irrigation across the state on the lines of the Phagwara STP which has also , received the National Water Mission Award. — TNS Cops cane-charge AAP activists in Phagwara on Thursday. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
