Ahead of MC polls, BJP, Cong leaders join AAP Jalandhar, January 22 Ahead of the MC elections, several key leaders from various parties embraced the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today. A councillor, a Congress leader wielding influence and a close aide of another Congressman were among a host of leaders who joined AAP in the presence of Cabinet Minister Inderbir Singh Nijjer. AAP’s Jalandhar Central MLA Raman Arora and Jalandhar West MLA Sheetal Angural were also present on the occasion. Prominent leaders who joined AAP included Ward No.16 BJP councillor Manjinder Singh Chatha, Kaku Ahuwalia and Sukha Pholariwal among others. Chatha is considered close to BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia. Speculations were rife last January too, that he would join SAD, but he stayed in the BJP after senior leaders persuaded him. However, Chatha today joined AAP and became its very first councillor in the House. Another AAP joinee was Kaku Ahluwalia, Congress leader and son of former chairman of the Improvement Trust Daljit Singh Ahluwalia. Two-time Youth Congress president Kaku Ahluwalia is a popular leader among the youth. — TNS Jalandhar, January 22 Constable Parminder Singh, 25, who was posted with CIA staff, Kapurthala, today succumbed to injuries he had sustained at the hands of rowdies at Talwandi Mehma village on October 15 last year. He is the third constable in the Doaba to have been killed after being attacked in the past three months. On December 8, Nakodarbased constable Mandeep Singh died when he was shot by assailants along with Nakodar trader Timmy Chawla, when he was trying to defend him from shooters. On January 8, Kapurthala gunman Kuldip Bajwa died when he was shot by car robbers he was chasing. Parminder, a resident of Dhandhal village in Kapurthala, was attacked by a group of men (and a woman) with sharp-edged weapons during a feud over overtaking of a vehicle. Parminder was going to his village on the ill-fated day, when he had an altercation with the driver of another car at Talwandi Mehma village. At least 20 to 25 men gathered at the site of the incident. The constable received serious injuries on the head. Grievously injured, Parminder was admitted to a private hospital in Jalandhar. He eventually slipped into a coma. He was brought back home recently, but his condition worsened and he succumbed to his injuries today. A case under Sections 307, 326, 325, 324, 323, 353, 186, 148 and 149 of the IPC had been registered at the Police Station Sadar, Kapurthala, on October 15, 2022. After the death of Parminder, Section 302 has also been added to the FIR. At least 12 persons had been nominated in the FIR of whom six have so far been arrested. Those arrested also include a woman. SSP Navneet Singh Bains said: “Six persons who attacked the constable have already been arrested.” SP , Investigation, Harwinder Singh said, “In the past few months we have lost three men. It is like a personal loss when one of our men goes as they are just like family. We are on the lookout for the other men booked in the case.” Garha residents protest against mohalla clinic Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 22 Residents of Garha locality in Jalandhar are up in arms against the conversion of a local family health centre in their locality into an Aam Aadmi Clinic. Residents have been protesting against the closure of the centre, which caters to 200 patients, for the mohalla clinic. Leaders of the BJP also joined the residents in their protest today. BJP leader Ashok Sareen Hicky said while the family health centre was already catering smoothly to the residents of the area and had male and female doctors deputed at it, was now being abruptly turned into an AAP clinic. Rather than deputing another doctor at the lab in the existing clinic, the government was planning to open AAP clinic. People were angry about this. BJP leader Amarjit Singh Goldy said the issue would be taken up with the BJP high command. Kuldeep Singh Chahal, a 2009-batch IPS officer, assumes charge as Commissioner of Police in Jalandhar on Sunday. TRIBUNE PHOTO Hooliganism won’t be tolerated: Chahal Jalandhar, January 22 The former Senior Superintendent of Police, Chandigarh, Kuldeep Singh Chahal, assumed the charge of Commissioner of Police (CP) here on Sunday. A 2009-batch IPS officer, Chahal after assuming charge held a meeting with the senior police officials on the law and order situation in the city. Police officials told him that security across the city had been strengthened and necessary steps were being taken to improve the law and order. Chahal said prevention of crime, ensuring safety of women, children and weaker sections and eradication of drug menace and gangster culture would be his priorities. SURVEILLANCE WILL BE IMPROVED ❝ The city will be put under strong surveillance to curb crime.
