Of the 16 cell phones, nine were seized from inmates while seven were found abandoned on the jail premises. The suspects have been identified as Jimmy of SBS Nagar, Harvinder Singh of New Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, Mussafar of Star Colony, Bhupinder Singh of GTB Nagar, Kamajot of Chauhan Nagar and Sonu of Shimlapuri. SUSPECTS WERE PLANNING MAJOR LOOT: COP SI Sukhwinder Singh said as per information, the gang was planning to commit some major robbery in the city and the six suspects were sitting at some abandoned building on 200 Feet Road. Following which, the police conducted a raid and nabbed them along with sharp weapons. The police seized eight mobile phones, a scooter, a motorcycle, iron rods and sharp weapons from the gang members. Investigating officer in the case SI Sukhwinder Singh said a tip-off was received that the six sus- pects were running a gang of robbers and they had looted several residents from city areas in the past. As per information, the gang of robbers was planning to commit some major robbery in the city and the suspects were sit- ting at some abandoned building on 200 Feet Road. Following which, the police conducted a raid and arrested them along with the sharp weapons and eight mobiles, he said. Now, the police will seek police remand of the suspects so that their robbery plan can be exposed and their involvement in other loot cases can also be verified. The police said the criminal background of the suspects was also being verified. Potholed roads: Rain adds to commuters’ woes Harshraj Singh DUGRI-DHANDRA ROAD IN PATHETIC STATE Tribune News Service Ludhiana, March 18 After rain lashed the city on Saturday, commuters faced inconvenience on potholed roads of the city. The departments concerned are yet to ensure repair of various broken roads in the city. Residents have been complaining about potholes on Hambran Road, Sherpur Road, Damoria Bridge Road, the Dana Mandi to Dugri Chowk road, different stretches in Haibowal, in industrial areas and several other parts of the city for a long time. After rainfall, muddy conditions increased the woes of the commuters. A resident, Gaganpreet Singh, said the departments concerned must take steps to ensure the repair of the broken roads. “It was difficult to drive vehicles on broken roads. Residents slammed elected representatives and the government for failing to get the damaged stretch of Dugri-Dhandra Road repaired. They said the broken stretch was an open invitation to accidents but the government authorities have turned a blind eye towards the issue. When the people pay taxes, the government must ensure the provision of good road infrastructure,” he said. Notably, private contractors recently started the recarpeting work on some roads under the civic body. An offi- c m y b cial said repair works of potholed roads would be carried out by the MC itself. MC’s Executive Engineer Sanjeev Kumar said the civic body’s hot-mix plant was running for two days but operations were later stopped due to rain. He said once the weather conditions were improved, the hot-mix plant would be made operational. Waterlogging in some areas Waterlogging occurred in a few areas amid rain. After which, road gullies were lying choked in the affected areas.
