TNS G20 ends in city, encroachments return Charanjit Singh Teja Tribune News Service Amritsar, March 23 The local administration managed to make roads encroachment-free before the G20 Summit, but the encroachers are slowly returning. Lack of interest on part of the local officials in maintaining the status quo is causing difficult to commuters. There are several markets in the city, which have been encroachment-free for over 10 days during the international event in the city. Commuters got respite from traffic jams and there is ample space for parking vehicles on roadside. As soon the G20 event ended on March 20, a number of vendors again encroached upon footpaths and roadside parking spaces. Customers at these vends park their vehicles, adding to the woes. Illegal encroachments have returned to haunt parts of the holy city. The shopkeepers again displayed their goods outside their shops. A large number of fruit vegetable vendors returned on the spot. Other roads, including Mall Road, Ranjit Avenue and Circular Road, too witnessed haphazardly parked vehicles. The old city area is also facing the same issue. “The city lacks adequate space for parking. In the absence of parking lots, residents park their vehicles on roadside. When the vendors encroach the same space the roads got congested,” said Jatinder Singh, a resident. According to information, local politicians press the MC staff to allow vendors to set up vends. “The vendors have strong political affiliation with the ruling party. They have been identified as Komaljit, Rahil, Barkha, Didar Singh, Manpreet Kaur and Paramjit Kaur. They were later released on bail. Reportedly, on July 17 last year, a police team had intercepted a youth identified as Mohit of Tungpai area under the Mohkampura police station. During the search, the police recovered 6 gm of heroin from his possession. However, following the arrest, he started shouting and called his family members and relatives on the spot. On seeing a mob gather there on the spot, the police teams requested for extra force. The mob started pelting stones and attacked the police party. The power line also went off. The accused managed to get Mohit released from the police party. The police have registered a case against around 30 persons under relevant sections of the NDPS Act and of the IPC. — TNS Amritsar, March 23 After the opening of the Vallah railway overbridge (ROB), now another ROB at No.22 railway crossing is ready to be opened to public soon. During the session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, Jasbir Singh Sandhu, MLA from the Amritsar West Constituency, raised a question in the Legislative Assembly about the construction work of the bridge at gate number 22 at Islamabad. Responding to the question, Local Government Minister Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar stated that the will be opened to public till April 20 bridge would be dedicated to the public soon. Inderbir Nijjar said 95 per cent of the construction of the bridge had been completed and we hoped that it would be operational within the next one month. The Amritsar West MLA claimed that the bridge would be opened to public till April 20. MLA Jasbir Singh also questioned the Local Bodies Minister about the pathetic condition of the road leading to Inderpuri area. He said people were facing a lot of problems due to this poor. Nijjar said the road was owned by the Railways, so it could not be repaired without the consent of the department concerned. Dr Jasbir Singh Sandhu said he would request the Railways to repair this road or if they issue an NOC for the repair of this road we will arrange government funds to repair it. Dr Jasbir said no stone would be left unturned for the development of the West constituency. “The West constituency had been ignored for the last few years. VISHAL KUMAR 17 chowkis merged into police stations PK Jaiswar Tribune News Service Amritsar, March 23 In order to bring down crime rate and strengthen staff in police stations, Police Commissioner Naunihal Singh merged 17 police chowkis with police stations. These include police chowki on Lawrence Road, Fatehgarh Churian Road, Loharaka Road, Sun City Road, in Golden Avenue, Green Avenue, Chatiwind, Main Bhago College, Kabir Park, Khandwala, Gwalmandi, Chheharta town and Verka Milk Plant. Earlier, there were 38 police chowkis under the Amritsar Police Commissionerate. The number of police chowkis was increased in the city to facilitate people and nail criminal elements efficiently. Now, the staff of these chowkis would be shifted to police stations and other wings for efficient working there. Many of them would be put on field duty. The Police Commissioner has also deputed inspector-rank officials as the Station House Officers at various police stations. As per norms, only an inspector-rank officer can head a police station. However, the rule was hardly followed. The step has evinced a strong reaction from local residents. Residents of eight gram panchayats had written to the Police Commissioner to review his decision for shutting down Fatehgarh Churian bypass police chowki. They said the chowki caters to around a population of 50,000 people and has a large number of migrants also. The eight gram panchayats include Nangli, Kamla Devi Avenue, Preet Nagar and Dayanand Nagar, besides Municipal Corporation ward number 12. He said there was a need to keep a strict guard on the ideology of Shaheed Bhagat Singh in the present times. 4 swindlers identified in ~10L fraud case Our Correspondent Tarn Taran, March 23 The Chabal police claimed to have identified a gang of swindlers who defrauded two Tarn Taran residents of Rs 10.8 lakh five months ago. The swindlers got the amount transferred in different bank accounts from Nirmal Singh, a local resident, and his brother-in-law Hardial Singh. Sub-Inspector Kulwant Singh informed here on Thursday that Nirmal Singh got a mobile call from an unknown person on October 18 last year, who introduced himself as a lawyer from Canada. The unknown person said his (Nirmal’s) nephew (sister’s son) had been arrested by the Canadian police as he had a quarrel with a Canadian citizen. After informing Nirmal of this incident, he asked him to immediately send him Rs 10.8 lakh. Even he provided him bank accounts to transfer the amount. Nirmal Singh transferred the amount from the Tarn Taran branch of HDFC Bank the same moment. After some days, he got to know that he had been cheated by the swindlers in a meticulous manner. Nirmal Singh lodged a complaint with the district police that got the matter investigated through the cyber cell and registered a case yesterday (on Wednesday) in this regard.
