Bhupinder Singh, a local resident, said he went to deposit the property tax but along with several others had to wait for several hours as the server of the MC portal was non-functional due to some technical issues. Phagwara MC Superintendent Amit Kalia admitted that the server didn’t function for more than three hours on Monday. He, however, claimed that residents were coming in large numbers to deposit property tax and the MC had succeeded in collecting more than ~5 crore as tax, which was 120 per cent higher than last year’s. OC MAN DIES AFTER ‘DRINKING LIQUOR’ Phagwara: A Bihar state resident was found dead under mysterious circumstances. The deceased has been identified as Rajindar Rishi, a resident of Katihar district in Bihar. Anirudh Kumar, a resident of the same district, told the police that the deceased had died due to excessive drinking. Investigating Officer (IO) Chama Lal said the police handed over the body to the family after post-mortem. OC 3 ARRESTED ON ASSAULT CHARGE Phillaur: The Bilga police have arrested three members of a family, including a woman, on the charge of assaulting a villager. IO Anwar Masih said Satnam Singh, a resident of Burj Hassan village, had complained to the police that the accused — Soma, her sons Sunny and Saabi had waylaid him on January 5 and attacked him with clubs and bricks. The IO said a case had been registered against the accused. Terming the incident as most unfortunate in which some protestors had defaced the main board of the Aam Aaadmi Clinic, Khatkar Kalan, the previous day, he said the law would take its own course in dealing with the offenders. He said the Banga Sadar police has booked three persons by name and five or seven unidentified persons for defacing government property and violating the orders of the District Magistrate. Jalandhar, March 28 Mandeep Kaur, a 33-year-old woman, who was in a live-in relationship with Vinod, was found dead at her residence in Santokhpura here on Tuesday afternoon. Police officials suspect that she was murdered, and an investigation is currently underway. Mandeep, a resident of Ravidass Mohalla in Phillaur, had separated from her first husband a few years ago, and Vinod, a resident of Dhogri village here was still married with two children living with his wife at Dhogri. The deceased was also a mother to an eight-year-old son from her first marriage. SHO Division Number 3, Sukhdev Singh said Mandeep’s sister from Phillaur had been trying to contact her for the past two days but received no response. “Fearing that something was wrong, she today visited Mandeep’s residence, and found the main door locked and a foul smell coming from inside the house. She inquired about her from the nearby residents and found that the door has been locked since Saturday,” he said, adding that she then immediately informed the police. Phagwara, March 28 The Lohian Khas police have arrested two Kapurthala district residents with an illegal firearm. The investigating officer (IO), Mohann Singh, said the accused had been identified as Harjinder Singh, alias Jindu, a resident of Toga Wala village under the Kapurthala Sadar police station and Gurwindar Singh, alias Mintu, a resident of Baba Namdev Colony, Kapurthala. The IO said he was on duty at a checkpost at Giddarr Pindi when the accused came on a motorcycle from the Makhu side and tried to flee on seeing the check post. However, they fell from the motorcycle and were arrested. A country-made .32-bore pistol, six live cartridges of 7.65 mm and a sharp-edged weapon were recovered from their possession. The IO said a case under the Arms Act had been registered against the accused and impounded the motorcycle. ~35-crore property tax collected Murdered NRI couple’s kin Tribune News Service Jalandhar, March 28 The Municipal Corporation has collected over Rs 35 crore property tax in this financial year. Last year, the MC could recover only Rs 29 crore against the target of Rs 42 crore. Officials said they were expecting more recovery till March 31. If someone doesn’t pay property tax, inspectors of the Property Tax Wing visit the areas to recover the tax as per the laid down procedures of action. Defaulters who have not paid the tax are served notice under the Section 112 of the Municipal Corporation Act to which they have to file a reply within three days, failing which another notice of sealing the property is served under Section 138 of the Act. Sources said the tender process for the same would start soon. Once the property is sealed, it will only be handed over to the owner after the payment is made. This had come to the notice of senior officials of the Municipal Corporation and a warning had also been given in this regard to residents and employees so that they check the discrepancies that are happening. “Property owners who are indulging in malpractices stand to face legal action,” officials had said. in shock; gloom in villages Ashok Kaura Phagwara, March 28 A pall of gloom descended on Mehsampur village near Goraya and in Chachrari village near Phagwara when the news of the brutal murder of an NRI, Sukhwinder Singh, and his wife Kiranpreet Kaur came in. Sukhwinder, who belonged to Mehsampur, and Kiranpreet, who was from Chachrari, were reportedly shot dead by unidentified armed assailants in their Manila house on late night of March 25. The news of the murder spread like a fire and villagers thronged the victims’ village residences to meet the family members. The deceased Sukhwinder Sukhwinder Singh and his wife Kiranpreet were shot in Manila. Singh went to the Phillipines in 2004 and, was running a finance business. He was living in joint family, which included his brothers and uncle. He married to Kiranpreet three years back, She went to Manila five months ago only. Santokh Singh and his wife Paramjit Kaur, the parents of Sukhwinder, and Gurdawar Singh Lambardar, the father of Kiranpreet, were seen in deep shock with flood of tears in their eyes. Lakhbir Singh, the brother of the deceased Sukhwinder, said both bodies would be cremated in Manila on Wednesday. It may be mentioned here that an unidentified killer gunned down the couple in their residence. The cause of the murder could not be known yet. Stuck in Muscat, Swaranjit Kaur returns home after three months Tribune News Service Sultanpur Lodhi, March 28 Having gone to Muscat to work as domestic help, Swaranjit Kaur felt uncomfortable there after three months and expressed her desire to return but the travel agents did not allow her to come back. Finally, she landed at the airport in Delhi after Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal intervened through the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and even paid for her ticket. Seechewal had gone to the airport on Tuesday to receive her. Kuldeep Singh, husband of Swarnjit Kaur, a resident of Moga, said that due to the efforts made by Seechewal, his wife was able to reunite with her family today after three months. He said that the travel agent had taken his wife to Muscat Seechewal intervened by taking up the issue with the Foreign Minister ‘GIRLS LEAD DIFFICULT LIVES’ Swaranjit Kaur said many girls from cities in Punjab like Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur and Amritsar live in difficult conditions in Muscat. Seechewal helped him through the MEA and also bore the cost of the air ticket sending it to her on March 16. The Rajya Sabha member said that he took up the issue with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar who immediately acted upon it and made the required arrangements. Seechewal said that poor families of Punjab are cheated in Arab countries by unscrupulous elements who take advantage of their difficulties and lure them with promise of high salaries. He also appealed to the Punjab government to take strict action against travel agents running the business of immigration without licence.
