She is followed by Vanya Gupta of Sat Paul Mittal School, who scored 99 per cent marks and bagged the second position in the district while Gurnoor Singh Grewal of Sacred Heart Convent School, Sahnewal, clinched the third position in the district with 98.8 per cent marks. Harshita Goel scored a perfect 100 in social studies and 99 in Punjabi and Hindi. Her father Sunil Goel is a businessman while mother Kavita Goel is a chemistry teacher who gives private tuition classes. Harshita wants to be a surgeon. She believes in hard work, consistency and a disciplined life. She used to study for 7-8 hours daily. The second topper, Vanya Gupta, scored a perfect 100 in maths, environmental studies and 99 in social studies and Punjabi. While Gurnoor Singh Grewal of Sacred Heart Convent Fire breaks out in hosiery, godown Three killed, 2 hurt as motorcycle, Ludhiana, May 14 The industrial hub witnessed two major fire incidents early on Sunday morning, one at the godown of wooden waste at Neechi Mangli and the other at a hosiery in Industrial Area A near Cheema Chowk. As per information, the fire broke at a wooden waste godown at 5 am. The godown had boundary walls of bricks while the roof was made of iron sheets. When the fire broke out, some workers were sleeping under the shed but they managed to rush out to save their lives. Firemen try to douse the flames at Neechi Mangli in Ludhiana. Following which, the workers called up the fire brigade. The firemen faced difficulty in dousing the flames from the front gate side as the fire was intense. Later, they brought a JCB machine which razed down the side walls of the godown. Firemen took more than five hours to completely douse the flames. The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained. A huge stock of wooden waste was stored in sacks in the godown, which had been supplied to industries as raw material. In the other incident, the fire broke out in Makkar Knit Fab, a hosiery in Industrial Area A near Cheema Chowk early this morning. The fire started around 5.45 am. Since the factory had adequate fire safety arrangements, workers pres- 11 mobiles seized from Central Jail Tribune News Service Ludhiana, May 14 A surprise checking conducted in the Central Jail here led to the seizure of 11 mobile phones and 200 gm of tobacco in two separate incidents. Assistant Superintendent, Jail, Sukhdev Singh, said on April 11, he along with the team conducted a checking in the jail. Besides checking belongings of inmates and also frisking suspicious ones, the entire jail premises was also scanned which led to the recovery of eight mobile phones lying abandoned there. He said the phones could have been kept by some inmates. A case under the Prisons Act was registered against the unidentified prisoners. In another case, Assistant Superintendent (Jail) Harbans Singh said on April 12, a surprise checking was conducted in the jail which led to the seizure of three mobile phones and 200 gm of tobacco. He said three phones were seized from inmates identi- fied as Sourav, Raman and Arvind while tobacco was seized from Raman. After the recovery of the banned items from the inmates, the Jail Department has launched a probe to identify the source which facilitated the entry of banned things inside the jail. Even the seized mobile phones would also be sent for forensic examination to inquire about persons who were in touch with these inmates. A Covid patient lost his life for the third consecutive day today. The person who lost his life was a 77-year-old man who was administered only single dose of vaccination. He was admitted to Mohan Dai Oswal Hospital for eight days. He was on ventilator support. The patient was admitted to hospital with the problem of breathlessness, fever and vomiting. — TNS c m y b car collide near Kup Kalan village Mandi Ahmedgarh, May 14 Three youths were killed and two injured seriously after a motorcycle and Swift Car collided near Kup Kalan village on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla highway near here on Sunday afternoon. The collision was so powerful that parts of both vehicles were scattered in the area on both sides of the four-lane highway. The chassis of the motorcycle fell in weeds in the stagnant water along the highway and the car’s engine fell on the other side of the road. While the police are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind the mishap, sources said illegally draining out water of a colony, frequently stagnating on the road, was the cause of the mishap. As the motorcyclist tried to manoeuvre through stagnant water on the highway, the driver of the car coming from the rear lost control over his vehicle and hit the motorcycle. The deceased were identified as Jaspreet Singh of Adamwal village, Banti of Ramgarh Sardaran village, who was riding the motorcycle, and Babar of Bagrian village. Condition of Anurag Verma of Adamwal and Jashandeep Singh of School, Sahnewal, clinched the third position in the district. A resident of Rajgarh village, he scored perfect 100 in maths, physics and history. His father Balpreet Singh is an engineer while his mother Harpreet Kaur is a homemaker. He said his teachers and parents had been the guiding light. He wants to be a cardiologist. He used to spend fivesix hours for studies. — TNS Nepal native found hanging from tree Tribune News Service Ludhiana, May 14 A man was found hanging from a tree near the Dholewal Military Camp on Sunday evening. The deceased was identified as Ruk Bahadur Thapa, a native of Nepal, who was staying in Sherpur here. Chaundan village were stated to be in a critical condition at a hospital in Malerkotla. Officials at the Ahmedgarh Sadar police station said information about shifting of three persons injured in the accident was received from the Civil Hospital, Malerkotla. Investigating officer Harjinder Singh said Jaspreet Singh died during treatment. Referring to information collected from the spot, ASI Harjinder Singh asserted that the driver of the car had lost control over the vehicle while saving the motorcyclist. Families of Banti of Ramgarh Sardaran and Babar of Bagrian were yet to receive information about the tragedy. Their bodies were lying at the scene till late in the evening as ambulances took only injured victims to the nearest Civil Hospital at Malerkotla. The ill-fated car was registered in the name of Sher Singh. The police said a case would be registered after recording statements of members of victim families. — OC Station House Officer (SHO), Police Division 6, Inspector Satwant Singh, said the victim had settled in Ludhiana many years ago and he was working at a hospital canteen. The SHO said preliminary investigation suggested that it could be a case of suicide. CCTV cameras of the area were also being scanned by the police to know the exact timing when the man reached the scene. The family of the deceased was staying in Nepal and the police were trying to contact them. The body has been kept at the Civil Hospital mortuary.
