They were arrested by a patrolling party on Monday. A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act was registered against them. They were brought on police remand for further interrogation to establish their backward and forward links. TNS ONE NABBED FOR STEALING COPPER Amritsar: Khalchian police have arrested a thief, identified as Satnam Singh, of Sheikhupura Mohalla in Jandiala for allegedly stealing copper from power transformers. The police recovered 55-kg copper and a three-wheeler from his possession. The police said they got a tip-off that the accused was involved in stealing copper from transformers and later used to sell in the Jahajgarh area. A case was registered against him. TNS Fire destroys goods worth ~1 cr kept in showroom No casualty reported; family members taken to safer place Tarn Taran, September 5 Goods worth ~1 crore were destroyed when a fire broke in a double-storeyed showroom, Kamal Boot House, in the border village of Bhikhiwind on the Khalra road here on Tuesday. Harjinder Singh, owner of the showroom, and the police said a short circuit in the power supply wire was cited as the reason behind the fire. Preetinder Singh, DSP , Bhikhiwind, said the family of the showroom owner, Harjinder Singh, lived on the upper story of the complex. The DSP said the family felt the smell of smoke around 4 am. The members of the family rushed downstairs and saw the smoke inside the showroom. The family lifted the shutters, but the fire had started spreading fast. The Bhikhiwind police were immediately informed of the incident. The symbolic observance was driven by several pressing concerns that have remained unaddressed, as teachers said that their future and subsequently the future of higher education in the state was in danger. PCCTU members expressed their dismay over the continued delay in implementing the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission. “Despite an announcement made by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Teachers’ Day last year, the promised pay revisions and benefits have yet to be realised, leaving teachers in a state of financial uncertainty and disillusionment,” said Dr Gurdas Sekhon, district unit head, PCCTU. Tribune News Service Amritsar, September 5 Members of the Amritsar Bar Association threatened to boycott the court of Tesildar -2 Amarjit Singh for an indefinite period here on Tuesday. They were protesting against his alleged adamant behaviour and working in an arbitrary manner at the Tehsil office here. The association led by its president Pardeep Kumar Saini reached outside his office and raised slogans against him. The association alleged the Tehsildar misbehaved with the lawyers who came to his office for work. The association unanimously passed a resolution that they would indefinitely boycott his court. During the protest, the functioning at the Tehsil office was affected. The victim was kidnapped as soon as she alighted from the bus. Police teams were immediately dispatched following a preliminary probe and the car was recovered from the Amritsar-Batala highway. Rajesh Kumar, DEO (Elementary), and Parminderjit Kaur, principal, Government Senior Secondary School (Girls), Tapiala, were honoured with State Award for Administration and State Teacher Award, respectively. Residents of several low-lying areas complain that there is reverse flow of sewer water which affects their houses. The stinking sewer water overflows from the manholes and accumulates. The deceased has been identified as Sukhraj Singh Raju (32). The father of the deceased, Gurmej Singh (65), has been arrested as a case under Section 302 of IPC was registered against him. Amarjit Kaur, mother of the deceased, in her statement to the Sadar police, Tarn Taran, said that her son Sukhraj Singh fell in bad company and used to consume drugs. She said that Sukhraj used to quarrel with the other members of the family under the influence of drugs and the family was much perturbed over his activities. She said that her husband attacked Sukhraj Singh with sharp-edged weapons on Sunday night. He was admitted to the local Civil Hospital in a serious condition where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday. After postmortem, the body was handed over to the family on Monday by the police.
