He epitomised the dapper and debonair Hindi film hero in unforgettable classics such as Guide and Hum Dono, and directed hit films, including Hare Rama Hare Krishna. He died in 2011 at the age of 88 and would have turned 100 on Tuesday. With fans across the globe celebrating his father’s legacy, it feels the actor-filmmaker is still around. The most famous movies from his early years are Munimji, CID, Paying Guest, Taxi Driver and Hum Dono. He’s also known for crime thrillers like Jaal, Dushman, Kalabazaar, Kaala Paani, Johny Mera Naam and Jewel Thief. But the one film that stands out in his filmography is Guide, an adaptation of RK Narayan’s book, counted as a Hindi cinema classic with his portrayal of Raju considered by many as one of the actor’s best performances. To pay tribute to the evergreen classic The Great Dictator (1940), Anand greeted Chaplin with a salute and said, “Hail Chaplin”. Delighted by this heartfelt gesture, Chaplin responded, “Welcome to my White House.” ■ During the shooting of Kinare Kinare song from the film Vidya (1948), Dev and actress Suraiya fell in love. MAGIC OF THE MOUNTAINS Magical Andes (2019) Magical Andes, the Netflix docu-series, explores South America’s mountains and the inhabitants of that area. The first season explores the link between ancient traditions and modernity in Peru, its vast cities coexisting with symbols of the Inca empire like Machu Picchu; and adventurers try to conquer the active volcano Cotopaxi in Ecuador among others. The series has the teen idol Zac Efron (Troy Bolton in the High School Musical) and his trips to France, Puerto Rico, London, Iceland, Costa Rica, Peru, and Sardinia capturing the green practices. SOME CELEBRATORY HUE India’s Mega Festivals (2023) India’s Mega Festivals on Disney + Hotstar holds a celebratory hue. Killer instinct The makers of the upcoming film Animal have shared another poster and this time featuring a “bloodied” look of actor Bobby Deol. Bobby Deol’s ‘bloodied’ look as ferocious antagonist in Animal revealed Bobby portrays the antagonist, the enemy to Animal. He embodies a character who is both fire and calm, a juxtaposition that adds depth to his portrayal. His fierce personality radiates through the new poster making him a formidable adversary for the film’s protagonist. Animal is an action thriller film directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and produced by TSeries and Cine1 Studios. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna and Tripti Dimri. The film was earlier scheduled to be released on August 11 but was pushed to December 1 due to pending post-production work. Bobby is returning to the big screen after 2019. The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
