A bus of Blossoms Convent School, Jagraon, carrying schoolchildren rammed into a wall at the village. A few students travelling in the bus had a miraculous escape as they did not suffer any injury in the mishap. The driver was reportedly drunk. Police officials said a preliminary probe suggested that the driver was drunk due to which he could not drive the bus in a responsible manner. After the accident, residents gathered at the scene. Since the bus driver did not escape, he was found to be drunk by the residents. Following which, they beat the driver and informed the school management about the matter. The residents said the bus driver admitted that he he had consumed alcohol on Friday morning. The school authorities need to keep a check on bus drivers and they should not be hired if they consume drugs or alcohol. The residents had also enquired about the students, who were found to be completely safe. The Teacher suspended for beating students Ludhiana, August 9 Beating students cost dear to a teacher of Government Primary School, Jamalpur Awana. DEO (Elementary) Ravinder Kaur, said a teacher, Kamaljit Kaur, who had allegedly thrashed Class V students, had been suspended for her behaviour and actions. The DEO said strict action was taken against the teacher due to her highly irresponsible behaviour. “We had visited the school following complaints by parents and met everyone, students and staff. At 8:30 am, I got to know about the incident and reached the school. Around 12 students were beaten by the teacher,” she said. Meanwhile, the teacher, Kamaljit Kaur, said she was teaching a lesson during which there was a word, which had Tribune News Service double meaning. Students started repeating the word and tried to misbehave with her, following which she tried to stop them and beat the pupils. She also alleged that entire staff was against her and they had deliberately called parents and provoked them against her. The police had to be called to persuade the parents. The parents said the children were brutally thrashed by the teacher and when parents tried to register a complaint today, she manhandled and misbehaved with them. Local residents after hear- ing the thumping sound came out of their houses. After checking children sitting inside the bus, they roughed up the driver and informed the police. A case was registered against the driver, identified as Sikandar, and the school management. The driver was booked on the charge of driving vehicle in a negligent manner while the case was registered against the management on the charge of criminal conspiracy. The police officials were also carrying explosive detective devices with them. They frisked random passengers to check if they are carrying any weapons or explosive items. TRIBUNE PHOTO: HIMANSHU MAHAJAN SEE ALSO P2 Ludhiana, August 9 In a step toward enhancing public, animal and environmental health, scientists from Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and Dayanand Medical College and Hospital have been awarded a multi-sectoral One Health project focusing on slaughterhouses’ surveillance for zoonotic pathogens. The project launch event was organised by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in New Delhi. The launch meeting and brainstorming session included an address by Dr Rajiv Bahl, Secretary of the Department of Health Research (DHR) and Director General of ICMR. Dr Bahl emphasised the need for collaboration between human and animal health profession- als for rapid detection of the spillover of zoonotic diseases. A team of professionals from Veterinary University including Dr JPS Gill, Director of Research; Dr JS Bedi, Dr Pankaj Dhaka and from DMCH including Dr Veenu Gupta, Dr Rajesh Mahajan and Dr Manisha Aggarwal participated in the meeting. Dr JPS Gill highlighted the university’s research efforts to address regional and national zoonoses within the One Health framework. He emphasised that the objective of enhancing food safety in hygienic meat production would benefit the slaughterhouses of Punjab and improve worker welfare. Police personnel put up notices regarding the same on the seized properties. Commissioner of Police (CP) Kuldeep Singh Chahal in a statement issued stated that the Dehlon police had arrested three smugglers in January and 10 quintals of poppy husk were recovered from them. The suspects were identified as Hoshiar Singh of Jodhan, Mukesh Kumar of Patiala and Jammu Singh of Jodhan. He said during the investigation, the police had found that the suspects had bought the properties worth 5.34 crores with proceeds of drug money. Cops put up notices on a smuggler's property in Ludhiana. The properties were identified and the matter was sent for approval to the competent authority. On Friday, after receiving orders of the property attachment, the police officials pasted property attachment notices on their properties. The attached properties include a residential-cum-commercial showroom and two houses. The CP said the police had already freezed property worth several crores of drug smugglers in the recent past and many such cases were under process and soon, the competent authority might issue notices of property attachment. The police also freezed assets worth Rs 1.62 crore of a drug smuggler at Balmiki Ghati. The police had arrested Anil with 260 gm of heroin in 2023. The freezed property included a house at Balmiki Ghati worth Rs 1.56 crore and a Honda City car worth Rs 6.10 lakh.— TNS Ludhiana, August 9 The city has hundreds of auto-rickshaws which have been ferrying students to school and vice-versa. Most of these vehicles are not following the proper safety norms and are putting the lives of schoolchildren at risk. Surprisingly, auto-rickshaws meant for ferrying passengers were found to be used for transporting school students. During a random survey in the city on Friday, some autorickshaws carrying children were found overloaded and no proper safety measures were being followed by its drivers. As per the norms, auto-rickshaws should have grills on the door so that students remain seated inside the vehicle in aproper and safe manner. However, in the auto, there were no grills installed and there was a risk of students falling off the moving vehicle. Even norms suggest that the schoolchildren should not be allowed to sit along the driver seat. But two students were caught sit- ting along the driver. Since the auto was a passenger vehicle, it could not be used to ferry students. It is learnt that such autos were not engaged by most of the schools, instead parents themselves hire these to send their children to schools. Another auto-rickshaw was seen on the Jassian road in which over 10 school students were bundled into it. A few autos were seen in which students were sitting on the temporary seat behind the rear seat, which is equally dangerous.
