The accused has been identified as Manpreet Kumar, alias Manni, of Khokhe Wal village. Assistant Registrar, Cooperative Societies, Phillaur, Anju Bala had complained to the police that the accused worked as secretary of the Khokhe Wal Cooperative Agricultural Services Society and embezzled Rs 12.29 cr. OC WOMAN TRAVEL AGENT HELD Phagwara: The police have arrested a woman travel agent for duping a woman of Rs 9 lakh on the pretext of sending her brother abroad. The accused had been identified as Parminder Kaur of Sohal Jagir village. Harpreet Kaur of Sohal Jagir village had complained to the police that she had paid Rs 9 lakh to the accused for facilitating her brother's migration abroad. However, neither did he had gone abroad, nor the money was returned. OC YOUTH ARRESTED FOR SNATCHING Phagwara: The Phagwara police have arrested a young snatcher here on Tuesday night. SP Rupinder Kaur Bhatti said the accused was identified as Vishal Bansal, resident of Rattanpura, Phagwara. The accused had confessed his involvement in snatching gold earrings from a woman few months back. OC SCOOTER STOLEN FROM OUTSIDE PNB Phagwara: A scooter (HP-803076) was found stolen before the branch of Punjab National Bank on Tuesday. Owner Ishant Sharma of Una, residing in local Model Town, Phagwara, told the police that he went to the bank after parking his scooter before the bank but found it stolen when came back.The police have registered a case. OC WOMAN DRUG PEDDLER NABBED Phagwara: The police have arrested a woman peddler on the charge of selling intoxicated tablets. As many as 105 intoxicated tablets were recovered from the possession of accused Bakhasho of Jandiala village in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district. A case has been registered against the accused. OC Railway underbridge project off track since ’22, people hassled Avneet Kaur REASONS FOR DELAY Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 4 The construction of a dual carriage railway underbridge in Urban Estate, Phase-I, here has been stalled for nearly three years, causing resentment among residents. They said despite multiple complaints and requests to the Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar, to expedite the project, the progress remains at a standstill. The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 16 crore, was inaugurated by then Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi in December 2021. The excavation at the site began in February 2022, but the work was abruptly halted when sewage pipes were damaged during the process. The MC then took more than a year and a half to repair the pipes, further delaying the project. However, even after the repair was completed in September last year, leakage started and additional damage was discovered in the sewage lines. This resulted in another halt to the project. MC officials claim that they have paid the PSPCL for the removal, but no action has been taken. Meanwhile, residents are increasingly concerned about the dangerous conditions created by the incomplete excavation work. The site has turned into a large pit filled with stagnant sewage water, posing health and safety risk. Banwari Lal Shastri, a priest at a temple just in front of the site, criticised the MC for starting excavation without coordinating with the electricity department to relocate the poles. He said several accidents had occurred at the site, especially at night when the uneven surface was difficult to navigate. Advocate Sanjeev Sharma, who had won a case against the MC, PSPCL and Railways under Section 133 of the CrPC for public nuisance, expressed his resentment over the continued delay in the project. He said despite orders from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Jalandhar-1 in September 2022 to complete the sewerage work within two months, little progress has been made. Sharma said foul smell and daily challenges faced by residents due to the neglected site had made their lives miserable. Superintendent Engineer of the PSPCL SP Sondhi confirmed that the payment to Phagwara: A 60-year-old resident of Mehatpur has been missing for the last two days. Bhupinder Rani complained to the police that her husband Kamal Nain went from his shop on September 2 without telling anybody and did not return home. A missing report has been registered in this connection. OC Avneet Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 4 Two teachers from Jalandhar will be honoured with the state award on Teachers’ Day at a state-level function in Hoshiarpur tomorrow. The event will be attended by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Education Minister Harjot Bains. The recipients, Parveen Kumar Karari and Surinder Kumar, have made contributions to enrolment and changing the face of their schools. Parveen Kumar, an associate teacher at Government Primary School, Bal in Alawalpur block, has been a pillar of support for the past decade. Under his leadership, the school has seen many improvement. Kumar leveraged the support of NRIs, local community members and influential figures to secure funds for upgrading the school’s infrastructure. He says he also purchased a van to facilitate student transportation. Kirandeep, originally from Ferozepur, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her room. She had been living with her distant aunt following the death of her father. According to Gurwinder Singh, the in-charge of Jalandhar Heights police post, Kirandeep had been suffering from depression since her father’s death two months ago. Her mother had abandoned her when she was a child and with no siblings or close relatives, her paternal aunt, who resides in Italy, arranged for her stay with a distant relative in Jalandhar. Police investigation concluded that depression was the sole reason behind Kirandeep’s decision to take her own life. Legal proceedings have been initiated following the completion of postmortem examination. Meanwhile, this is the fourth suicide in Jalandhar within the past week. The other incidents include a Class XI student, a house help in Shiv Vihar and an employee at OM Visa Immigration, who died by suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of the building. Tribune News Service Tribune News Service Kapurthala, September 4 Speaking during Zero Hour on the concluding day of the three-day Vidhan Sabha session, Sultanpur Lodhi MLA Rana Inder Partap Singh on Wednesday said entire Punjab was facing problems related to cleaning of sewage and disposal of garbage. “In Kapurthala, four persons had died recently due to diarrhoea, the outbreak of which was caused due to poor garbage collection and its disposal, after which Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh had visited the area and affected families. He had also brought the matter to the notice of Local Bodies Minister Balkar Singh”, Rana said. He further said that the MC, Kapurthala, had passed a resolution for the purchase of super-suction machines for cleaning of sewage but no decision was taken for its purchase despite of the fact that the MC has a reserve funds availability of Rs 14 crore. The MLA blamed Municipal Commissioner, Kapurthala Anupam Kler, for inaction for taking any action into the matter. “We should fix responsibility for the laxity and have requested the Local Bodies Minister to suspend the Com- missioner and an inquiry be conducted to fix the responsibility”, Rana demanded. Kler, however, has been maintaining that there has been no laxity on her part and she instead had done everything in ensuring that the problem in the affected areas got sorted out at the earliest. Speaking on another matter, he said that the previous government had given contract of streetlights to a company which had promised to reduce power bills. “Neither the bills have reduced now the streetlights are working, demanding that the civic bodies should stop making payments to the company”, he said. Jalandhar, September 4 The Jalandhar Commissionerate Police has located the two Class XI girls, who went missing two days back, from Jammu and Kashmir today. According to Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma, the search began when Anju, a resident of Rampura Phul, Bathinda district, reported that her daughter, a student of Class XI of Meritorious School, went missing around 5 pm on Monday. She received a call from her daughter’s class in-charge, informing her that she had left the school on her own and was nowhere to be found. Rakesh Kumar (36), from Government Primary School, Bhangala, has been teaching special students since 2009. “I must say that these kids have become an integral part of my life. I have learnt a lot from them. Despite several problems, they smile, work hard, laugh and what not,” he said. Kumar got permanent in the Education Department in 2023. His class has students suffering from intellectual disability and some have hearing, speech and visual impairments, too. “They just need love. There have struggles too. The deceased, identified as 26-year-old Rajat Kumar, son of Varinder Kumar and a resident of Preet Nagar, Phagwara, was the only child of his parents. Rajat had moved to Canada five years ago, hoping to build a prosperous career. However, tragedy struck when his car collided with a truck while he was on his way to work, resulting in his instant death. According to relatives and locals, Rajat was a hardworking young man who had been striving to secure a Rajat Kumar stable future for himself and his family. Rajat’s relatives mentioned that the accident took place early in the morning when Rajat was driving to work. Unfortunately, his vehicle collided with a truck and the impact was so severe that he died on the spot. ther investigation revealed that another girl, reportedly her friend from the same class, had also gone missing from the school a day earlier. Acting swiftly, the police registered an FIR under Section 127 of the BNS. Multiple police teams were immediately formed and dispatched to various cities and districts to locate the missing girls. Utilising the advanced scientific and technical intelligence, the police teams traced both girls to Jammu and Kashmir. Officers were promptly sent to the region, where they successfully recovered the girls and ensured their safe return to Jalandhar. Remove poles for4-laning: DC to PSPCL Jalandhar, September 4 DC Dr Himanshu Aggarwal today inspected the ongoing four-laning work of the Lamma Pind-Jandu Singha Road to review its progress. Dr Aggarwal directed Punjab State Power Corporation (PSPCL) to shift all electric poles by the first week of October to ensure the timely completion of the project. Additionally, he instructed the officials of Jalandhar Municipal Corporation to complete the remaining work of laying rainwater pipes within the next 15 days. Highlighting the importance of this project, Dr Aggarwal stated that the road is crucial for a large number of commuters travelling between Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur. He urged PWD officials to accelerate the pace of work to ensure the project’s early completion. — TNS
