According to the police, when SI Jaswinder Singh along with a police team were on duty near Kanech Cut, GT Road, they saw a Mahindra Bolero (bearing registration number PB 10 GK 0572), from which a person was taking out a heavy box. On suspicion, the police checked the box and seized 43,000 tablets of banned tramadol and Clovidol 100. The police arrested the man and seized the tablets and the vehicle. TWO NABBED WITH HEROIN Ludhiana: The Ladhowal police have seized 15 gm of heroin and a weighing scale from Deedar Singh and Chandan Sharma of Nawanshahr. The complaint in this regard was filed by SI Dalbir Singh under the NDPS Act. According to the police, they were patrolling at Talwandi Kalan village when they saw a Maruti Swift car (bearing registration number PB 32 Q 4445) parked under the Sutlej Bridge, near the railway crossing. When the suspects saw the police, they tried to flee the place. The police nabbed the duo and seized 15 gm of heroin and an electronic weighing scale from them. The car was also seized. Both suspects were remanded in police custody. TNS MC removes 8 encroachments from green belts Tribune News Service Ludhiana, September 4 The Municipal Corporation (MC), Ludhiana, removed eight encroachments from green belts in Sarabha Nagar and the Model Town Extension area here on Wednesday. The drive was carried out on the directions of MC Commissioner Sandeep Rishi. These encroachments were done by owners of a food outlet, liquor vend, etc. The subzone office of the MC, Ludhiana, situated in Leisure Valley (Sarabha Nagar) has also been demolished. Talking about a liquor vend situated near the Dugri canal bridge, building branch officials of MC Zone D stated that entry to the liquor vend was through the green belt. The pavement outside the vend has been razed and it had been sealed by the civic body team. Further, the residents/owners had been warned of strict legal action if they try to encroach upon the green belt areas again. Ludhiana, September 4 The city today received 18.2 mm of rainfall and it was scattered mostly in old city areas. After the downpour, roads inundated giving difficult time to commuters. A visit to Transport Nagar revealed the pathetic condition of roads and how commuters travelling through the area are having a difficult time. The dilapidated condition of the roads turned worse after the rainfall as potholes got filled with water. At many places, the entire road was in a poor state, giving bumpy rides to motorists. The necessary works to repair potholes had not been done, inconveniencing commuters. The transporters claimed to have raised the issue multiple times with the authorities concerned but nothing had been done to redress their grievances. “The problem of waterlogging in the area was there since I started working 20 years ago due to lack of a proper drainage system. Even a small spell of rainfall leads to accumulation of water on roads and there seems to be no end to the menace,” said Vikram Singh. “A commercial vehicle today turned turtle due to potholes, which were not visible due to the rainfall in the Trasport Nagar area. According to the complainant, his uncle Sehdev Saab (77), a native of PalaPatna village in Orissa, was working as a caretaker at Kids School, Basant Avenue, Phase 4, here. On Tuesday while on duty at the school, two persons, Rajiv and Raja, both residents of Dhandran village, had an argument with the elderly man over some issue. Both suspects started beating him on the road. When passers-by started gathering at the scene, the duo fled escaped from the place. The deceased was taken to the Civil Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspects were arrested by the police. Ludhiana, September 4 Taking another step forward for improving solid waste management in the city, the Municipal Corporation (MC) conducted a meeting with industry representatives to encourage them to use refusederived fuel RDF in their respective industrial units. The meeting was held by MC Joint Commissioner Inderpal at the MC’s Zone A office on Tuesday and owners of around 20 industrial units participated in it. Chief sanctuary inspectors (CSI), Com- munity Development Officers (CDOs) and community facilitators (CFs) were among those present in the meeting. The civic body officials said the meeting was held under the guidance of the Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company (PMIDC) and Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB). The owners of industrial units were encouraged to use at least 5 per cent of the RDF in their respective units. The representatives showed willingness to adopt the RDF and sought a few clarifica- NHAI to consider underpasses at five major black spots in city Ludhiana, September 4 To decongest the heavy flow of vehicular traffic on the main arteries in the city, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has agreed to consider the proposal of vehicular underpasses (VUPs) at five major accidentprone black spots in the city. Acceding to the proposal submitted by Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora, NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav has asked the Regional Officer (RO) to plan the best suitable alternatives for decongesting the heavy traffic flow on the Grand Trunk (GT) Road, connecting Delhi with Jammu via Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar, in the city. Besides, he has also proposed the construction of an elevated road from Sherpur Chowk to Jalandhar Bypass to address the severe traffic congestion and reduce the high risk of road accidents. Earlier, the NHAI had approved the construction of a mini flyover at Kailash Nagar Chowk here. It had agreed to construct the mini flyover at Kailash Nagar Chowk between Shivpuri Chowk to Basti Jodhewal Chowk and further connecting it to New Shakti Nagar/ Subhash Nagar between Basti Chowk and Tajpur Chowk. “The timely implementation of these infrastructure projects will provide relief to residents,” the ruling AAP member in the Upper House of Parliament said, adding that he had urged the NHAI Chairman to ensure construction of VUPs and LVUPs on a priority basis. — TNS c m y b tions regarding the same. The MC Commissioner said steps were being taken to improve solid waste management in the city and public/industry should also support the civic body in the same. He is a close associate of former Congress minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who is presently lodged in jail. Sources said the raid started around 4 am at Rajdeep’s shop, his office and house in the village. Till late noon, the raid was on. Rajdeep’s family stays abroad. His name also cropped up in an illicit liquor case at Baho Majra and in the food grain tender scam in which the former minister was allegedly involved. On September 2, the latter was standing near a garbage dump, rear side of the cremation ground, in the area when a person came on a Honda Activa, which was not bearing any registration number plate. A plastic bag was hanging on the vehicle. Raising suspicion, the man was stopped and after checking, 12 bottles of Empire Number 1 Mota Santra and 36 bottles of countrymade liquor were seized from his custody. The suspect was arrested.
