The police have registered an FIR against five persons on charges of attempt to murder and the Arms Act in this connection. Those booked were identified as Vishal SUSPECT FLEES FROM LOCK-UP A man arrested in another case managed to slip from the lock-up of the Mohkampura police station in the wee hours on Sunday. He was identified as Shubham, alias Chini, a resident of the Mohkampura area. As per information, he got the lock opened on pretext of going to toilet. When he did not return, the police tried to open the toilet door. He pushed cops on duty and fled from the police station. Though the police chased him, he managed to escape. He was arrested by the police on Saturday night and was to be produced in a court on Sunday. Chopra, alias Rocky, Raman Teli, Lalit Kumar, Rahul Salothtion and Jagjit Singh, alias Sunny Brar. They are yet to be arrested. Pallavi Chopra, the complainant, alleged that she got married to Vishal Chopra around 10 years ago. She said they had two children from the marriage. The complainant said five days ago, her husband quarrelled with her and thrashed her. He inflicted sharp weapon injuries on her and threw her out of the house, the complainant said. The victim said after the incident, she came to her brother’s house. She said the next day her husband came at her brother’s house and assaulted her mother, brother and nephew and ransacked the place. The complainant alleged that yesterday Vishal along with his accomplices again came to her brother’s house and started hurling abuses. She said Vishal fired around six gunshots at them, but she and her family escaped narrowly. Later, Vishal and his accomplices fled when the people started gathering outside the house following the ruckus created by them. The police recovered empty shells from the spot. The Mohkampura police said raids were on to nab the suspects who were absconding from their homes since the incident. They would be arrested soon, said the police. Farmer booked for burning crop residue Our Correspondent Tarn Taran, September 22 Tasbeer Singh, a farmer from Buraj village, was booked for burning paddy straw in his fields on Saturday. Assitant sub-inspector Gursahib Singh said the farmer burnt paddy straw on his two acres land. The Sarai Amanat Khan police was informed by Gurmeet Singh, cluster incharge, Gandiwind block, about burning of crop residue by the farmer. Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana, had informed Gurmeet about paddy straw being set on fire by the farmer. The farmer was booked under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. 13 vendors, five residents challaned for COTPA violations Three arrested on charge of drug trafficking in Gurdaspur Tribune News Service Amritsar, September 22 The Border Security Force (BSF) has apprehended three persons allegedly involved in drug trafficking. Acting on an information shared by the intelligence wing about movement of some suspected persons in the border area of Gurdaspur, the BSF personnel in collaboration with the Punjab Police launched a manhunt to arrest them. Consequent upon tactically laying a roadside naka near Machhrala village of Gurdaspur district, the BSF and the Punjab Police successfully apprehended three persons travelling in a car (Chevrolet Cruze LTZ). All the suspects are residents of Amritsar. After Amritsar, September 22 The Health Department has issued challans to 13 cigarette vendors for violations of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) and to five individuals for flouting the ban on smoking at public places. Civil Surgeon Dr Kirandeep Kaur said district tobacco control wing had been asked to implement provisions of the COTPA strictly. She said the Health Department was working to check usage of tobacco under the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP). She said checking was being conducted frequently at different places for the violation of the ban. The Civil Surgeon warned shopkeepers against selling loose cigarettes, sale to minors and sale of tobacco packs which do not have pictorial warnings as per the guidelines of the government. She said teams were also destroying tobacco products which were not manufactured as per government specifications. Dhami said it was a matter of great pride for Punjabis, especially Sikhs that a Sikh officer would lead the Air Force of the country. “Earlier, Air Marshal Arjan Singh served as the Chief of the Indian Air Force for a long time. The police recovered Rs 53,000 of alleged drug proceeds, besides a mobile phone from the possession of the suspect. According to the police the suspect had close links with Pakistan- based smugglers. He used to sneak contraband into the Indian territory through drones, the police said. The police received a tipoff that Lovepreet used to supply contraband in retail in the 88-foot-road area, said Vinod Kumar, SHO, Sadar police station. He said immediately a trap was laid and the suspect was arrested. Though no contraband was seized from him, the police recovered drug money from him. The suspect was produced in a court and brought on four-day police remand, the SHO said, while adding that further probe was on to ascertain his backward and forward links. More recovery of drug money was likely during the further course of investigation, the SHO said. The police said suspect’s mobile phone was sent for forensic examination to find clues about his associates. — TNS Punjab Police, an extensive search was conducted in the Haruwal village area. The search culminated around 5.20 pm with the recovery of one drone and a large packet of suspected heroin (Gross weight 2.840 kg) attached to it from a field nearby Haruwal village in Gurdaspur district. The drug was wrapped in a yellow adhesive tape. A luminous strip was also found attached to the packet. The drone was neutralised with the technical interference of the BSF counter measures deployed in the border area of Gurdaspur district. Upon opening the packet, the BSF and the Punjab Police personnel found five small transparent polythene packets containing a drug suspected to be heroin. PESCO employee held whilesneakingintoxicant tablets into Central Jail 14 cellphones, chargers, tobacco seized Tribune News Service Amritsar, September 22 The authorities concerned have busted a network of sneaking intoxicants and prohibited material into the Amritsar Central Jail with the arrest of a PESCO (Punjab Ex-servicemen Corporation) employee and recovery of over 900 intoxicant tablets, besides two “bidi” bundles from his possession. He was identified as Navjot Singh. He works as a plumber by profession. He had hidden tablets and “bidis” in a special cavity of the thick sole of his slippers. As the news of his arrest spread, his accomplice, another PESCO employee identified as Jagtar Singh, also a plumber, fled from the jail complex. The Islamabad police have registered an FIR under the NDPS Act and the Prisons Act against two PESCO employees, besides three prison inmates identified as Parwinder Singh, alias Vicky, Sharanbir Singh and Heera Singh in this regard. From Parwinder Singh, the jail authorities made another seizure of 129gm of narcotic powder. Hemant Sharma, Superintendent, Amritsar Central Jail, said they received a tipoff regarding the involvement of Navjot Singh in smuggling of forbidden material inside the high security jail complex. “We observed his movements for two days. He used to change slippers after getting inside jail. He wrapped forbidden material in a carbon paper to avoid getting caught in the scan of X-ray machines,” he said. During preliminary investigation, it was found that all five suspects were part of the smuggling racket. The jail authorities seized another 129gm of narcotic powder from Parwinder Singh. In another incident, Dhiraj Kumar, a resident of Margindpura, was robbed of his motorcycle on Friday by three bike- borne persons near Theh Naushehra village. In his complaint to the Kacha Pakka police, Dhiraj Kumar said after closing his shop in Ghariala village on the Friday night, he was on way back to his Margindpur village when three masked robbers stopped him near Theh Naushehra village and robbed him of his motorcycle.
