TRIBUNE PHOTO Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 27 The property tax wing of Jalandhar Municipal Corporation has recovered Rs 28 crore out of Rs 55 crore so far. As taxpayers can avail 10 per cent rebate till September 30, the MC is collecting over Rs 1 crore property tax per day. Officials said the office would also remain open on Saturday. “Till September 30, the taxpayers can pay pending amount,” said Bhupinder Singh, Superintendent, Property Tax wing, Jalandhar MC. “Posters and awareness campaigns are being held to inform the residents that they can avail 10 per cent rebate if they pay property tax till September 30,” he said. Last year, the department had collected Rs 43 crore. There are around 1.65 lakh Residents can avail 10 % rebate till Sept 30 taxable properties in the city, including residential and commercial. The defaulters who have not paid the property tax have been served a notice under Section 112 of the Municipal Corporation Act. In case, they fail to file a reply within three days, a notice of sealing the property would be served under Section 138 of the Act. Once the property is sealed, it will only be handed over to the owner after the property tax is paid. The process of sealing the properties is on, said an MC official, adding that with the implementation of unique ID under smart city project, collection of tax would become much easier. Gang involved in printing fake Canadian visas busted, 2 held Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 27 The police have busted a gang involved in duping individuals using fake Canadian visas by arresting the two key accused and recovering Rs 26.7 lakh in cash along with five passports from them. The kingpin of the case is learnt to have been currently based in Turkey and was printing fake tourist visas and visa stickers there, which were then being dispatched to UP and further on to Jalandhar. The racket was busted as Gurnam Singh of Talwandi Bhindra village of Batala in Gurdaspur district lodged a complaint over rejection of his visa with the Jalandhar police. In his complaint, Gurnam Singh said that he had handed over 25 original passports and money of himself, his relatives and acquaintances for Canadian tourist visas to Santosh Kumar of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma and his teams found that Santosh Kumar’s real name was Wajid Ali and he was from Barsaini Tola village of Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The second accused arrested in the case is Munish Kumar, a native of Teachers Colony, Balachaur (Nawanshahr) and based in Jalandhar near Patel Chowk. The Police Commissioner said that payments to the accused were made both in cash and through bank transfers. On September 21, the CIA Staff had arrested Ajay Walia, who runs a cloth shop at Mohalla Jagatpura, Hoshiarpur, with more than 12,000 intoxicating pills and seized Rs 5 lakh drug money from him. According to police, Karamjit passed on the intoxicating pills to Chaindeep Singh and his father Charan Singh, who operate Rajendra Medical Store in Tanda. Chaindeep told the police that he used to sell the pills at his store along with his brother Rajinder Singh. Cops said Chaindeep confessed that he had also hidden habit-forming tablets at his brother’s house. Acting on the information, the police team raided the house and seized 16,800 intoxicating pills, 19,200 habit-forming capsules and Rs 5 lakh drug money. Paramjit Singh of Bhodi Pur village complained to Nakodar DSP that the accused had ploughed a water channel and pathway leading to his fields despite a stay order issued and threatened him with dire consequences. The IO said the DSP submitted his report to the Jalandhar (Rural) SSP who sought legal opinion from the district attorney. District Health Officer Dr Jatinder Bhatia said acting on a tip-off, the inspection was done at Khanpuri Gate, Gaushala Bazaar and Gur Mandi. During checking, seven samples of desi ghee and butter were collected. He said the samples had been sent to Food Lab, Kharar, and further action would be taken on the basis of the test report under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
