A Bench of Justices J Chelameswar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul, which had on April 18 reserved its verdict on cross-appeals by Sidhu, the state of Punjab and the victim’s family, is likely to pronounce its verdict at 10.30 am. According to the prosecution, Sidhu and co-convict Rupinder Singh Sandhu were allegedly present in a Gypsy parked near Sheranwala Gate crossing in Patiala on December 27, 1988, while Gurnam Singh was on his way to a bank in a Maruti car with two others. As Gurnam asked the Gypsy occupants to give them way, the duo “beat him up and fled”. Gurnam was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead. continued on page 7 New Delhi, May 14 In a surprise move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday divested Union Minister Smriti Irani of the Information and Broadcasting portfolio and assigned it to her deputy Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore. Sangrur, May 14 A Dalit labourer from Samundgarh village has been forced to make several trips to Dhuri and Sangrur, carrying his 30-year-old disabled daughter on his back, and changing two buses for the 25-km travel, to try and get her pension restored, which was stopped around six months ago. Amar Singh says his daughter Pal Kaur has been certified as “100 per cent physically disabled” — she has no control over her legs — and was receiving a monthly pension for disabled persons of Rs 250 through a bank in Kauseri village, close to his village. However, around six months back, bank officials informed her that her pension had been stopped by the Social Welfare Department, but did not give any reasons. “Over the past four months, I have made several trips carrying Pal to visit government offices in Dhuri as well as A file photo of late Sunanda Pushkar with Shashi Tharoor. The matter pertains to the killing of Sohan Singh and his son-in-law Avtar Singh in the Janakpuri area and setting Gurcharan Singh afire in the Vikaspuri area. Gurcharan died three years later. Kumar gave his consent for the test, saying he was willing to undergo it either in India or abroad and would bear the expenses. The judge recorded his consent. The test would be conducted at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Lodhi Road. The special investigation team (SIT) had alleged that Kumar was not cooperating. His counsel, however, countered that the SIT claim was not right because Kumar’s assent was mandatory. They said Kumar was named for the first time as an accused in the case in 2016 and he joined the probe. Kumar was granted interim bail by a lower court in December 2016. The High Court on February 22 turned down the SIT plea to cancel it. — TNS New Delhi, May 14 Over four years after Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar, 51, was found dead in a hotel suite here, the Delhi Police on Monday charged the senior Congress leader with abetting her suicide. The chargesheet, filed in the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Dharmender Singh, who will consider it on May 24, says Pushkar’s body bore “scuffle marks” when found in her suite at Leela Hotel on the night of January 17, 2014. “These (the marks) seem to have been caused due to a scuffle between Sunanda Pushkar Tharoor and her husband Shashi Tharoor, as per the statement of their personal attendant Narain Singh. However, this fact is being examined further.” The chargesheet also says that Pushkar’s brothers and son have made “no allegations against anyone”. Dismissing as “preposterous” the nearly 3,000-page chargesheet, Tharoor, 62, said he intended to contest it vigorously. “No one who knew Sunanda believes she would ever have committed suicide, let alone abetment on my part. If this is the conclusion after four-plus years of inves- tigation, it does not speak well of the methods or motivations of Delhi Police. In October 2017, the law officer made a statement in the Delhi HC that they have not found anything against anyone, and now they say I have abetted suicide. Unbelievable!” The Congress stood by its Thiruvananthapuram MP , calling it a “conspiracy” by the Modi government to malign and defame him. Tharoor is the only one to be arrayed as an accused in the case, which the police have concluded is that of suicide. On January 1, 2015, the police had filed an FIR against unknown persons under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC. The Congress MP has been charged under IPC Sections 498-A (husband or relative subjecting a woman to cruelty), which entails a maximum punishment of three years, and 306 (abetment to suicide), which attracts a maximum jail term of 10 years. Pushkar died days after she alleged her husband was having an affair with a Pakistani journalist. The police said there was no evidence of murder but she may have been driven to suicide. — Agencies & TNS more on page 7
