The complainant stated to the Jalandhar (rural) SSP that the agent neither sent his brother abroad, nor returned his money. Investigating Officer Buta Ram said a case was registered against the accused in this regard. OC MAN HELD WITH ILLEGAL PISTOL Phagwara: The Nakodar Sadar police have arrested Vishwa Singh, alias Vishu, of Kang Sahibu village after recovering an illegal .32 bore US-made pistol with a magazine and five live cartridges from him. Investigating officer Tirath Ram said a case under the Arms Act was registered against the accused. OC PEDDLER HELD UNDER NDPS ACT Phagwara: The Nurmahal police have arrested drug peddler Sukhraj, alias Jassi, alias Kalu, of Kandola Kalan village, after recovering 17 intoxicating tablets from him. Investigating officer Gurnam Singh said a case under Sections 22/61/85 of the NDPS Act was registered against the accused. OC Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria offers prayers at Shri Vishwakarma Temple in Phagwara on Friday. Phagwara, September 20 Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Wednesday paid obeisance at Shri Vishwakarma Temple on Banga Road here. During his visit, the Governor underlined the significance of community institutions in fostering social harmony and service. On his arrival, the Governor was accorded a warm welcome by a cross-section of leaders and dignitaries. Prominent among those present were Shri Vishwakarma Charitable Trust head Pardeep Dhiman, Phagwara Congress MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, BJP Kapurthala district president Ranjit Singh Khojewal, former minis- ter Manoranjan Kalia, and Ramgarhia Educational Trust chairperson Manpreet Bhogal. Senior civil and police officials, including Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner Amit Panchal, Phagwara Sub-Divisional Magistrate Jashanjit Singh and Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora were present on the occasion. He interacted with members of the managing committee and took stock of the services being rendered to the public at the hospital. — TNS One held for raping minor Our Correspondent Garhshankar, September 20 Based on the statement of a 15-year-old girl, the police have arrested Harpreet Singh, alias Mintu, of Souli village, for raping her and registered a case against him under Section 65 of the BNS and Section 6 of the POCSO Act. The victim told the police that she was a tenth-grade student. Harpreet asked her to be friends with him. In January 2025, he lured her to his home and raped her, resulting in her pregnancy. The victim stated that when her health deteriorated, her family brought her to the Civil Hospital, Garhshankar, for treatment, where she gave birth to a baby girl. Acting on this statement, the Garhshankar police registered a case against the accused and arrested him. Kapurthala, September 20 In a heart-wrenching incident, tragedy struck twice at the home of Satnam Singh, a farmer from Sangra village, as devastating floods first destroyed his entire paddy crop and then he lost his mother. The family, overwhelmed by the loss and trapped by floodwaters, was left with no option, but to perform mother’s cremation in the courtyard of their house. “She was shattered after seeing our fields under floodwater,” said Satnam Singh in a choked voice. “Our entire crop has been wiped out. On September 17th, my mother’s health suddenly deteriorated. We rushed her to a hospital by boat around 3 pm. She suffered a heart attack and didn’t survive,” he said. Even bringing Gurnam Kaur’s body back home was an ordeal. “We returned One killed, six injured in mishap Phagwara, September 20 A road accident involving a Punjab Roadways bus left the driver dead on the spot and six others injured on Friday evening. Eyewitnesses said the bus was travelling from Chandigarh to Amritsar when it collided with a truck near Phagwara. Passengers reported that bus was not speeding at time of the accident. Dry woods for the cremation had to be ferried from a saw mill in Sultanpur Lodhi — the only access route being boats. Many relatives couldn’t attend the last rites. “Some came, struggling through the water. Others just couldn’t make it,” said Satnam Singh. The emotional burden weighs heavy not just on Satnam Singh. Village numberdar Kuldeep Singh Sangra said, “Every day we step into that courtyard. We all will be reminded about Satnam Singh’s mother’s cremation here.” Village sarpanch Gurjit Kaur Sangra said the decision for the cremation at home was taken collectively. “The cremation ground is still underwater. Given the situation, villagers came together and supported the family’s difficult choice. Right now, the village is accessible only by boat,” she said. Satnam Singh’s father Gajjan Singh is already ailing. His health further deteriorated after the loss. Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal, who has been monitoring the situation, told The Tribune, “Since not many can reach the house due to floodwaters, the kirtan will be held for the peace of the departed soul in Sultanpur Lodhi after bhog on September 26. Relatives will be called there,” he said. Three held with 850 gm opium Our Correspondent Phagwara, September 20 Three persons were arrested after recovering 850 grams of opium from them at a naka near Dhilwan, the police said today. The naka was manned by ASI Deepak Kumar. A white Toyota Etios car bearing registration number PB10-DG-3434 was intercepted at the naka by the police. After stopping the vehicle, one of the occupants attempted to get rid of a black polythene packet by throwing it under a tree. The packet was recovered by the police. On opening the packet, the police found opium in it. The arrested accused were identified as Jaswant Rai, a resident of Kandola Khurd; Paraminder Singh, a resident of Sunarh Khurd; and Hardev Singh, a resident of Kotranai, Phagwara. Their vehicle was also seized by the police. SHO Dalwinderbir Singh said a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against the accused and further investigation initiated in this connection.
The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
