Contractor’s supporters intervened and prevented him from setting himself ablaze. Following the incident, the fair was shut down. Festival season: Efforts on to make roads encroachment-free Regular checking in markets to continue, warning issued Nikhil Bhardwaj Tribune News Service Ludhiana, September 27 As the festival season has already started and shopkeepers and roadside vendors have started putting their goods on roads, the city traffic police are not in a mood to spare encroachers. The drive to ensure that city roads remains encroachment-free during the festival season has already started. On Saturday, the traffic police, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Traffic, Jatin Bansal, along with officials of the Municipal Corporation, carried out a drive at Field Ganj where encroachments were removed and offenders were told to obey the traffic rules. The ACP said during the drive, goods of roadside vendors who had put up their goods on a road obstructing the traffic were removed and a warning was issued to the offenders. “The traffic police will regularly check markets in the ongoing festive season to ensure that traffic remains smooth and no one resorts to encroachments. The traffic police had already initiated awareness programmes through which shopkeepers and vendors were told to follow the traffic norms and avoid encroachments on roads. The police will take immediate action against violations. The ADCP said on Friday, encroachments were removed from Ghumar Mandi under the supervi- sion of ACP (Traffic) Gurpreet Singh and wrongly parked vehicles were also challaned. On Saturday, a drive was carried out in Field Ganj by ACP Jatin Bansal and road was cleared for traffic. Shopkeepers and vendors were also issued warnings and their support was also sought to keep the traffic flow smooth during the festival season. Army engineers join work to prevent water from entering Sasrali village Shivani Bhakoo Tribune News Service Ludhiana, September 27 On the request of the district administration, the Army has deployed its engineering wing to assist workers at Sasrali Colony, where the Sutlej had changed its course and begun eroding the dhusi bandh. Engineers, along with the local workforce, have started de-silting operations in the middle of the river to divert the water flow away from the village. Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain while speaking to The Tribune said the administration’s major focus during the floods was to ensure that water did not enter the village. “During days of heavy rainfall, the river’s flow caused land erosion at an alarming rate of nearly three acres per day beyond the dhusi bandh. However, the water level has dropped significantly over the past five days, with only 15,000 cusecs being discharged at Phillaur. It will help restart Continued on page 2 Out on parole, man facing 13 cases nabbed for snatching woman’s chain Mahesh Sharma Raikot, September 27 The Ludhiana (rural) police claimed to have busted a gang of drug peddlers and chain snatchers who had been involved in anti-social activities for over a decade. Kingpin of the gang, identified as Gurpreet Singh Gora of Bhadaur town, was nabbed hours after he, along with his another accomplice, committed a snatching near Panchmukhi Mandir here on Friday afternoon. However, Kindi of Bhadaur, his accomplice, succeeded in fleeing the scene under the cover of darkness. The snatched golden chain and motorcycle used in the crime were also recovered from the suspect. SSP Ankur Gupta said the Raikot City police, led by SHO Amarjit Singh, had nabbed a notorious drug peddler and a chain snatcher, Gora, during a campaign launched against anti-social elements ahead of the festival season. The police swung into action after receiving the complaint and nabbed Gora when he was targeting another victim. Kindi, the co-accused, fled under the cover of darkness. Though the police are yet to ascertain details of the accomplice of the main suspect, preliminary investigations revealed that Gora was booked under at least 13 criminal cases registered at Bhadaur, Rampura, Barnala, Longowal, Moga and Bathinda cities. Gora is serving sentence in connection with a drug smuggling case and had been on parole for 54 days. The parole of the suspect will end on October 5.
