The affidavit, part of the admission process, seeks primarily to regulate and restrict student protests and demonstrations on the campus. “The Tribune” was first to report the decision of the Centre to restructure the PU Senate and Syndicate, and transform the latter from an elected to a fully nominated body. While supporting the agitating students, Tewari said the notification changing the fundamental structure of the Senate and Syndicate by invoking powers under Section 72 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act -1966 was patently illegal and a legal travesty. He said PU was constituted by the Punjab University Act -1947 passed by united Assembly, and only the Punjab Vidhan Sabha had the powers to amend the Act if the character of the two bodies had to be changed. TEWARI EXTENDS SUPPORT TO AGITATING STUDENT LEADERS Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari with agitating students at Panjab University. City GST collection dips 4% in October Tribune News Service Chandigarh, November 2 After registering an increase in September, the gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection witnessed a decline of 4 per cent in October in comparison to the gross levy collected during the corresponding period last year. According to data released by the Ministry of Finance, the GST collection for October this year stood at Rs 233 crore, which is Rs 10 crore less than Rs 243 crore mopped up in the same month last year. The UT had registered 17% growth in GST collection in September, as the collection stood at Rs 231 crore, which was Rs 34 crore more than Rs 197 crore mopped up in the same month last year. Earlier, the GST collection in the city saw a drop of 2% in June this year and the tax collection dropped to 5 per cent in July and witnessed a further decline of 12 per cent in August. The GST collection for August stood at Rs 214 crore, which was Rs 30 crore less than Rs 244 crore mopped up in the same month last year. The tax collection in July was Rs 221 crore — Rs 12 crore less than Rs 233 crore collected in the same month last year. The June collection was Rs 4 crore less than Rs 224 crore mopped up in the same month last year. At Rs 363 crore, the UT had registered a record increase of 53% in the gross GST collection in May year. c m y b Zirakpur, November 2 A major fire broke out at "Sekhon Palace" on the Zirakpur-Panchkula and spread to the adjoining "Aura Garden" around 11 pm on Sunday. “Pandals” (wedding set-up) erected at both palaces were destroyed in the fire. A wedding was going on in one of the halls. However, no loss of life was reported as people were evacuated in time. Eight fire tenders from Zirakpur, Panchkula and Mohali were rushed to the spot as flames engulfed the “pandals” at both places. As onlookers stopped at the spot, there was traffic chaos on the highway. A short-circuit was believed to have caused the fire. However, the exact cause was yet to be ascertained. A team from the IT Park police station nabbed accused Aalam of Ambwala, Panchkula; Jasveer of Alipur, Panchkula; and Rahul Kumar of Majari village in Hoshiarpur, Punjab. On Friday, Navneet Sharma, SDO of subdivision IV, CHB, reported fresh excavation and removal of soil from the IT Habitat project site. Acting on the complaint, the police raided the spot. They impounded two trucks and a earth-moving machine being used in the unauthorised mining activity. The accused, all drivers by profession, have no previous criminal record, the police said. V-3 roads to get facelift, tender process begins Ramkrishan Upadhyay Tribune News Service Chandigarh, November 2 Residents can expect a smooth ride on UT roads soon with the recarpeting of V-3 (sector-dividing) roads starting in the coming days. The tendering process for works with an estimated cost of Rs 24.21 crore is underway. Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla said the V-3 roads, having a total linear length of 81 km, had recently been transferred from the Municipal Corporation to the Engineering Department, UT, for their upkeep and maintenance. The patchwork on V-1, V-2 and V-3 roads have been completed as per requirement. Further, the re-carpeting of the V-3 roads between Sectors 31-47, 48-49, and 52-61 will commence very shortly, she added. Babla criticised the Opposition councillors of AAP and the Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla inspects road work in Maloya. Congress for opposing the transfer of the V3 roads in the general house meeting held in March. She said the BJP-led MC was moving forward with development as its only focus. The MC has already commenced the re-carpeting of the V-4, V-5 and V-6 roads across the city. As many as 69 roads, with a total length of 227 km, are being upgraded across various sectors and villages. Works worth approximately Rs 40 crore have been allotted across 11 subdivisions. The Mayor said recarpeting would soon begin on the key V3 stretches on Udyan Path, Sukhna Path, Chandi Path, Shanti Path, Vidya Path, Udyog Path and others. The re-carpeting of roads under the jurisdiction of the UT Engineering Department — from junction 48 to UT boundary, junction 59 to 60, and 60 to 61 has been completed. Work on Railway Road up to Daria, road at the back of Nayagaon up to the Punjab Civil Secretariat, the stretch from Sarangpur to IRB Complex, and another from Nayagaon to Khuda Ali Sher is underway.
The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
