They attacked Walia when he was sitting in his car outside his house on Saturday afternoon allegedly with sharpedged weapons, leaving his driver Harjit Singh injured. The attackers have been identified as Devinder Singh Tanwar, alias Romi, and Nitin Rana, residents of Kalia Colony, Jalandhar, and two unidentified men. Rana hails from Amritsar. Devinder and Rana are also charged with attacking a woman’s home at Jalandhar Kunj on Saturday and later attacking Walia in the same complex, sometime later. Two separate FIRs have been registered in this regard. A case under Sections 74 (criminal force against a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty), 324 (4) (causing damage to property), 351 (2) (criminal intimidation), 115 (2) (Voluntarily causing hurt) and 333 (house- Harjit Singh, HS Walia’s driver, who sustained injuries in the attack in Jalandhar. trespass) of the BNS has been registered against them at the Maqsudan police station in Jalandhar for vandalising the woman’s house. Another FIR has been registered this evening for attack on Walia. Walia alleged, “Devinder Singh has several cases registered against him and had been harassing a woman resident of Jalandhar Kunj for the past some time. The woman had been complaining to the police but I intervened on her request to get an FIR registered in the case some months ago. Thereafter, the accused was arrested and sent to jail for three months. After he came out, we came under attack from him yesterday. He first visited the woman’s house and broke glasses and furniture, also targeting her and later came to my house and attacked me. My driver has sustained injuries in the attack.” Walia said when the persons attacked him, he raised the alarm following which residents came out and blocked the car being driven by the attackers and roughed them up. Walia said four men had come to attack him, of which two unidentified men ran away when he raised the alarm and eventually Devinder and Nitin also fled the spot in their car. The police said Devinder sustained injuries after being beaten up by residents and was hurriedly taken away by his accomplice Nitin in their car as they fled the scene. His current whereabouts and place of treatment are not yet known. In the FIR, filed by the Maqsudan police, the woman complainant alleges that the attackers targeted her house (at Jalandhar Kunj) and broke glass and furniture and also tore her clothes. She alleged Devinder had been sending her indecent messages and threatening to abduct her daughter. She also alleged that he threatened her yesterday that they would kill Walia and also her husband and brothers. The SHO said, “Devinder and his accomplice attacked the woman’s house and broke glass panes, etc on Saturday. A case had also been registered four or five months ago against the same men for harassing the woman. The duo have been booked but are absconding. The police are on the lookout for them. Further investigation in the case is also on.” c m y b Bike-borne men fire shots at house in K’thala village Our Correspondent Phagwara, February 22 Panic gripped Nangal Lubana village near Kapurthala after some assailants opened fire at a residential house in the early hours this morning, sending shock waves across the locality. The incident occurred around 1:30 am under the jurisdiction of Begowal police station when two masked men arrived on a motorcycle and fired multiple rounds at the residence of 30-year-old Darwinder Singh, also known as Prince. Singh had report- edly returned to his native village barely two weeks ago after staying in the US. Eyewitness said the attackers, with their faces covered, used a pistol. The episode was captured on a CCTV camera, which has now become a crucial piece of evidence for investigators. Although no injuries were reported, several bullet marks were found embedded in the outer walls of the house, underscoring the intensity of the attack. The police are closely examining CCTV footageto establish the identity of the attackers. Heat stress advisory for wheat growers Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 22 Wheat was cultivated on 1.7 lakh hectares in Jalandhar district last year, recording an average grain yield of 48.5 quintal per hectare. Experts have cautioned that the rising temperatures may pose a threat to the crop this season. According to agricultural scientists, temperatures during the second week of February were 2-4°C higher than the corresponding period last year. Wheat, particularly at the grain-filling stage, is highly sensitive to elevated temperatures. Exposure to heat stress at this critical stage can lead to shrivelled grains and ultimately lower yields. MS Bhullar, Director, Extension Education at Pun- jab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, has advised farmers to apply light irrigation under prevailing high-temperature conditions to mitigate stress. He emphasised that farmers should monitor wind speed while irrigating to prevent crop lodging. Echoing similar concerns, Hari Ram, Head of the Department of Agronomy at the PAU, recommended spraying a 2% solution of potassium nitrate on the wheat crop. The solution can be prepared by dissolving 4 kg of potassium nitrate (13-045) in 200 litre of water. He advised that the spray should be applied twice, first at the flag leaf stage and again at the anthesis stage, to help the crop withstand heat stress.
