A case was registered against the accused brothers. – OC PISTOL, LIVE CARTRIDGE SEIZED Toxic waste burning continues unabated inside PAP complex Tribune News Service Jalandhar, May 16 Nearly two weeks after the open burning of waste at the PAP complex came to the fore, residents of Ekta Nagar, Rama Mandi and adjoining areas have once again raised concerns over the administration’s alleged apathy towards the persistent burning of waste inside the high-security premises. Residents said that despite repeated complaints to the authorities and pollution-control bodies, no concrete action had been taken, leaving them exposed to toxic fumes and severe health hazards. They further claimed that the burning of plastic and other waste materials had continued since Friday evening, with thick smoke engulfing nearby residential pockets and commercial establishments. A total of 305 nomination papers were filed for 50 wards of Municipal Corporation Kapurthala and 82 filed for 13 wards of the Sultanpur Lodhi Municipal Council. For the Kapurthala Municipal Corporation, 50 nominations were filed, each, by AAP and Congress candidates for all 50 wards, while 35 filed nominations from the BJP and 27 from the Shiromani Akali Dal. The scrutiny of the nomination papers filed under the next phase will be done on May 18. Phagwara, May 16 Panic gripped Begowal town in Kapurthala district on Friday evening after exchange of fire between suspected drug smugglers and the CIA Kapurthala police team during a special anti-narcotics operation at the busy Satguru Rakha Chowk. During the firing, a stray bullet struck former sarpanch Satpal Singh of Nadali village who was purchasing vegetables in market. He sustained injuries in his thigh and was immediately rushed to hospital, where his condition was stated to be stable. Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora said the CIA team had received specific intelligence regarding 1.5 kg heroin seized, ex-sarpanch injured in crossfire the movement of a large narcotics consignment and had laid a trap near the Begowal area. Acting on the input, the police team intercepted the suspects, following which they opened fire on the police party in an attempt to escape. Eyewitnesses claimed that nearly five to six rounds were fired during the encounter, triggering chaos in the crowded marketplace as shopkeepers and residents ran for safety. SSP Toora stated that during the operation, the police seized 1.5 kg of suspected heroin, which falls under commercial quantity under the NDPS Act. Following the incident, SSP Toora and SP (D) Harinder Singh reached the spot along with heavy police force and intensified naka bandi across the district to trace the other accused. The injured youth was allegedly fleeing on a stolen motorcycle at high speed when he lost control of the vehicle, leading to the accident. Manjinder Janab, a resident of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district, was travelling from Garhshankar towards Nangal on the motorcycle when, near Pahlewal village, his bike collided with an oncoming tipper truck. The impact was so severe that the tipper went out of control and overturned into a roadside ditch. Officials added that the motorcycle involved in the accident is suspected to be a stolen one. The two-wheeler is registered in the name of Jeet Ram. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
