Investigating officer Major Singh said 20 gram heroin was seized from the possession of the accused Vijay Kumar, alias Vija, a resident of Mohalla Baghwala, Shahkot. A case has been registered against the accused. OC TWO ARRESTED WITH HEROIN Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have arrested two persons on the charge of consuming heroin. Investigating Officer Balveer Chand said the accused have been identified as Sangram of Nahl village, and Ravindar Singh of Jalalpur Kalan village. A lighter, a silver paper, and plastic pipes used for consuming contraband were recovered from their possession. OC MOGA TRACTOR DRIVER ARRESTED Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested a Moga village tractor driver on charge causing death by negligence. Investigating Officer Angrej Singh said the accused has been identified as Mukhtiar Singh, son of Karnail Singh, a resident of Chamb village under Dharamkot police station Moga. A case has been registered against the accused. OC MAN BOOKED FOR SELLING LIQUOR Phagwara: The Mehatpur police booked a villager on the charge of brewing and selling illicit liquor. Investigating Officer Amrik Lal said 20 bottles of hooch and 25 kilogram of lahan (raw liquor) were seized from the possession of the accused Jagdev Singh, a resident of Khehra Mushtarka village, who manged to flee from the spot when the police raided the spot. oc TWO 'DRUG ADDICTS' HELD Phagwara: The Mehatpur police have arrested two persons on the charge of consuming heroin. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused. oc GTU slams move to link ‘DA dues’ with pay parity Tribune News Service Jalandhar, May 31 Teachers under the banner of the Government Teachers’ Union have strongly criticised the government for linking the issue of pending dearness allowance (DA) with pay parity in its submission before the court. The union termed the move misleading and against the interests of government employees, stating that DA and pay parity are separate issues and should not be treated as interconnected. Voicing their concerns, GTU Punjab state president Sukhwinder Singh Chahal, general secretary Gurbinder Singh Saskaur, finance secretary Manohar Lal Sharma and press secretary Karnail Phillaur said employees’ pay scales were implemented on the recommendations of various pay commissions and were not granted as a special concession by any government. They argued that the payment of DA, which is meant to compensate employees for rising inflation, is a legitimate entitlement and should not be linked to pay parity while deciding the release of pending installments. The union leaders said the stand taken by the Cabinet Sub-committee on DA, head- Terms move misleading, against interests of employees ed by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and comprising ministers Aman Arora and Dr Baljit Kaur, has sparked widespread resentment among government employees. They urged the government to take immediate steps to release the pending DA installments and resolve longpending financial demands of employees. The union further alleged that the government has failed to fully implement the recommendations of the pay commission, restore the old pension scheme, restart the rural border allowance and address issues related to Punjab pay scales. It claimed that the delay in resolving these matters, coupled with the pending DA issue, has increased dissatisfaction among employees across the state. Warning of intensified protests, the GTU said if the government does not take concrete steps to address employees’ financial and service-related grievances at the earliest, it will be compelled to launch a stronger state-level agitation in the coming days. According to General Diary (GD) No. 12 recorded at Police Station, Tanda, on May 30, the police received information that Arshdeep Singh and several others allegedly created a nuisance during celebrations after the victory of a Congressbacked candidate from Ward No. 1. The GD entry states that the group allegedly committed “sacrilege” of a broom, the election symbol of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and raised objectionable slogans against the defeated candidate, creating tension and apprehensions of a breach of peace. The police initiated preventive proceedings under Sections 126 and 170 of the BNSS. On the next day, Arshdeep was taken into custody, produced before the Executive Magistrate and subsequently sent to judicial custody. The incident took place at Jalandhar’s Silver Plaza Market. The miscreants seriously injured both, stabbing them with sharp-edged weapons and the butt of a pistol. Someone made a video of the attack with pistols and weapons in the market. After the incident, the injured were admitted to the Civil Hospital and a complaint was also lodged with the police. Injured Sonu said he had come to Silver Plaza Market with his family for dinner when a group of youths approached him and asked to speak with his son, Nikhil. As Nikhil went to talk to them, the accused allegedly attacked him. When Sonu intervened to protect his son, he too was struck on the hand way station and described him as a well-mannered young man with no history of unlawful conduct. They claim he has been unnecessarily implicated in the matter. The incident again underscores the state of road safety in the region and the perils which pedestrians are exposed to even during a leisurely evening walk. The deceased has been identified as Manpreet Kaur, a resident of Nurmahal. She was seven-month pregnant and also has a six-year-old son. Out for a walk with her friends and family members late last night, Manpreet was crushed by the vehicle. Both her friends have sustained serious injuries. The two injured women have been identified as Kiran and Joginder Kaur. While both have been admitted to a private hospital in Jalandhar, Kiran is currently said to be critical. While the family made a complaint to the police this morning, they were unaware of the kind of vehicle which Victim Manpreet Kaur hit them. It was during police investigation that the vehicle was traced to a be a Thar. The Nurmahal police have booked Harmeet Singh, the owner of the vehicle, who is absconding. Manpreet’s husband Jaspal Jassi said the impact of the incident was so severe that his wife died instantly on the spot. Family members recounted that after having their meal, the trio were heading out for a stroll on the NakodarNurmahal road, a routine they followed everyday, when they were struck by the vehicle while crossing the road near Mishar petrol pump. Among the two other women injured, Kiran sustained injuries to her chest. Jassi, Manpreet’s husband, reported the incident to the Nurmahal police station. The police said while scanning the CCTV footage of the incident, the vehicle was traced to be a Thar. A vehicle was owned by Harmeet Singh, son of Santokh Singh, resident of Shampur on the NurmahalPhillaur road. The police said Harmeet lives with his mother here while his father is abroad. The police also raided his residence but no one was found in the house. The vehicle also wasn’t at the house. The impact of the crash was such that parts of the vehicle were left behind at the spot, which have been recovered by the police. These include a broken bumper and other damaged components. SHO, Nurmahal, Labh Singh, said, “A complaint had been received by the police this morning. We are examining the CCTV footage. A case has been registered against the driver, who is on the run. The owner will be traced soon.”
The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.

The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
