According to the police, the stolen wheat was meant for distribution to beneficiaries under the government’s subsidised ration scheme. The assailants reportedly entered the Pungrain godown after midnight, overpowered the watchmen, confined them in a room and threatened to kill them if they resisted. The robbers loaded about 400 wheat sacks onto a truck and fled the scene. Before escaping, they siphoned diesel from other trucks parked inside the warehouse premises and filled the vehicle used in the crime. A warehouse watchman said the gang first cut off the electricity supply to the premises. When he stepped out to check the power failure, he was overpowered by the armed men, who then locked him and the other guards inside a room before executing the theft. GARBAGE FOUND DUMPED ON MALL ROAD Civic body chief penalises commercial establishments Charanjit Singh Teja Tribune News Service Amritsar, June 28 Municipal Commissioner Bikramjit Singh Shergill on Sunday ordered strict legal action against commercial establishments violating sanitation norms after taking serious note of an incident in which garbage was illegally dumped on the city’s Mall Road late on Saturday night. Soon after receiving information about the incident, Shergill directed the Municipal Corporation’s sanitation wing to immediately clear the waste and identify those responsible for violating the norms. He later personally supervised a special enforcement drive on Mall Road and Lawrence Road to check indiscriminate dumping of garbage and enforce compliance with the Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules. During the drive, several commercial establishments were found violating municipal sanitation norms and were fined on the spot. Satyam Enterprises and Gurmukh Singh Paint Store were each fined Rs 10,000, M/s Caret Line Showroom was fined Rs 5,000, Municipal Commissioner Bikramjit Singh Shergill and other officials check the garbage that was illegally dumped on the Mall Road by a prominent commercial establishment in Amritsar. a wine shop on Lawrence Road was penalised Rs 2,000, while Sharma Sweets on Dasondha Singh Road was also challaned for violating the rules. Shergill said the Municipal Corporation cleans city roads three times daily, but some commercial establishments continue to dump waste on public roads instead of using the designated disposal system. He warned that violators would face strict penalties and legal action under the Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules. Appealing for public cooperation, the Commissioner urged shopkeepers, business establishments and residents to maintain separate bins for wet and dry waste, dispose of garbage through authorised channels and avoid littering public places. He said maintaining cleanliness in Amritsar was the collective responsibility and called upon residents to help keep the holy city clean and garbage-free. Gaming zone attack leaves youthcritically wounded in city Tribune News Service Amritsar, June 28 A youth was critically injured after a group of assailants allegedly attacked him inside a gaming zone in the upscale Ranjit Avenue area of Amritsar late on Saturday night. This despite the fact that heavy police force was deputed in the area in view of the VVIPs’ movement regarding a religious programme attended by hundreds of people. The victim, identified as Prayash Sharma, is undergoing treatment at a hospital, where doctors have described his condition as serious. According to preliminary investigations, Sharma was playing 8-ball pool at a club when several armed men surrounded him and launched a violent assault on him. Initial findings suggested the attack stemmed from an old personal rivalry. During the incident, a woman receptionist, who reportedly attempted to intervene in the matter, was also assaulted. After some time, when Jarmanjit Singh asked her to vacate the house, she allegedly started arguing with him. Amritsar, June 28 Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday dedicated the newly constructed flyover at the junction of Sultanwind Bypass and Sultanwind Link Road to the public. Built to ease long-standing traffic congestion and ensure seamless connectivity for over two lakh devotees visiting Amritsar every day, the project has been completed by saving Rs 11.52 crore of public money. Prior to this, an autorickshaw awareness rally was flagged off to spread awareness about the campaign across the district. The rally was taken out in various parts of the city to educate the public about the importance of polio immunisation. Dr Vij stated that although Acting Civil Surgeon Dr Bharti Dhawan inaugurates the campaign by administering polio drops to a child. India had achieved the status of a polio-free country, continuous efforts were required to maintain this achievement. Therefore, the WHO conducts Pulse Polio rounds from time to time. Pistols, narcotics seized in separate incidents Tribune News Service Amritsar, June 28 The Amritsar rural police confiscated four pistols, narcotic substances, including heroin, and a drone in separate incidents in the past 24 hours. The Ajnala police arrested three persons and seized three illegal pistols, along with 14 live cartridges, during a routine patrol near Degree College, Ajnala, on Saturday. The arrested men were identified as Sunny of Ladeh village, Lovejit Singh of Sarai village, Gursewak Singh of Phulle Chak village and Swaraj Singh of Tera Kalan village. According to the police, the patrol team intercepted a motorcycle (PB-02-FJ-7265) approaching from the Phulle Chak side. During the search, Lakhwinder Singh was found carrying a Glock 9 mm pistol loaded with six live cartridges. Similarly, Gursewak Singh was allegedly carrying a Beretta 9 mm pistol with an empty magazine, while Swaraj Singh was found in possession of a .30 bore pistol loaded with eight live cartridges. Apart from weapons, the police also seized the motorcycle and a case under the Arms Act was registered against them. Further investigation is on to ascertain the source of the illegal weapons and possible links to criminal activities, the police said. In the second incident, the Gharinda police arrested Amritpal Singh of Jathaul village, presently living in Manochahal village in Tarn Taran, and seized a pistol along with 15 live cartridges. The police also seized 450 gm of heroin from his possession. Investigating officer Lakha Singh said the accused was arrested after intelligence inputs that he was involved in cross-border drug smuggling.
