Youth snatches woman’s purse Moment of joy INBRIEF THREE BOOKED FOR FRAUD Nakodar: The police here have booked three persons, including a couple, on charges of fraud and criminal conspiracy. The accused have been identified as Paramjit Singh, a resident of Rawal village in Kapurthala, his wife Kulbir Kaur, and Samson Masih, a resident of Basti Peer Daad in Jalandhar. Rupindar Kaur, a resident of Kangana village in Shahkot, had complained to the police that her brother-in-law, Paramjit, and other accused had prepared a forged affidavit in her name to obtain a divorce order from the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Canada. OC FOREIGN CURRENCY STOLEN, 2 BOOKED Nakodar: The Nurmahal police have booked two unidentified persons for stealing foreign currency from a house. Gurdev Singh, a resident of Shamsha Bad village, complained to the police that thieves barged into his house on the night of August 23 and stole ~30,000 in cash, 500 Canadian dollars and 200 British pounds. OC THREE ARRESTED IN DRUG CASES Nakodar: The police have arrested three persons in separate drug cases. The Nakodar Sadar police arrested a man for allegedly possessing intoxicant tablets. Investigating officer Paramjit Singh said that 22 intoxicant tablets were recovered from Pardeep Singh, a resident of Pati Takhar Shankar village. The Shahkot police arrested Naresh Kumar, a resident of Saidpur Jhirri village, with 25 intoxicant tablets. The Mehatpur police nabbed Bhupindar Singh, a resident of Mohalla, with 39 tablets. TRIBUNE PHOTO: MALKIAT SINGH 17-yr-old detained with country-made pistol Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 4 A 17-year-old boy was detained with a countrymade pistol and a magazine in Kapurthala. The weapon was seized from him at a checkpost during routine checking by the police on Thursday. The boy told the police that a friend had handed over the pistol to him. The police have launched a detailed probe into the incident. He was produced before a juvenile court, which sent him to a juvenile home for boys on Friday, the police said. The boy was detained at a checkpost near Nawa Pind Bhatthe by a team of the Kapurthala Kotwali police station. During checking, he was found in possession of the .32-bore pistol, along with the magazine. The police said the boy was spotted walking from the Nawa Pind Bhathe side. He panicked on seeing the police and tried to change direction. Getting suspicious, the police chased and apprehended him. Officials said a detailed investigation had been launched into how he came to possess the pistol. Kapurthala Kotwali police station SHO Lakhvir Singh Four teachers to get state awards Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 4 Four teachers from Jalandhar will be honoured at a statelevel function on Saturday. Three of them have been selected for the State Teachers’ Award and the fourth for the Young Teachers’ Award. Among those selected for the State Teachers’ Award is Kumud Kumari Sharma, principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Gandhi Camp. She focused on improving academic results and strengthening school infrastructure during her tenure. Sharma said while serving as a vocational teacher at Government Girls’ Senior Kumud Kumari Varindervir Secondary School, Nehru Garden, she was in charge of NCC and career counselling. After taking charge as principal of the Gandhi Camp school in 2015, she found that its pass percentage was below 40 per cent. “Through extra classes for Classes VIII, X and XII over the past decade, we gradually improved the results,” she said. Gurpreet Kaur Sunny Chhabra Sharma was also part of a team of principals that visited Singapore, following which several infrastructure improvements were undertaken at the school, including an increase in the number of projectors and computers. These words from Sohan Lal, who taught at Government Primary School in Mandala village of Jalandhar’s Lohian Khas block, were enough to leave an entire village emotional. But this was not just a farewell message. It was the realisation that a teacher who had become an inseparable part of their lives was leaving. That day, Sohan Lal’s phone was flooded with calls and messages. Some went to his home to meet him. Students cried and asked him not to go. Parents struggled to hold back their emotions. After more than four years of sharing classrooms, conversations, celebrations and difficult days with their teacher, saying goodbye was not easy. Sohan Lal has now moved to Phagwara, September 4 A purse was snatched from a woman by a scooter-borne youth here on Friday. Manjit Kaur, a resident of Phillaur, said she had come to Phagwara to purchase medicines for her granddaughter. After buying the medicines, she returned to the bus stand, where a youth approached her on a white scooter and snatched her purse before fleeing from there. Manjit said the purse contained medicines, important documents, a mobile phone and cash. People present at the spot claimed that a snatching incident involving the same youth had taken place on Thursday. — OC Students with Sohan Lal at Government Primary School in Lohian Khas block’s Mandala village before his transfer recently. Fatehgarh Sahib following his transfer. But in Mandala, his departure has left behind a void. When Sohan Lal joined GPS Mandala in 2022, settling into village life was not easy. He had come from Chandigarh, along with his wife and a child, and adapting to a new environment took time. But gradually, Mandala stopped feeling like a posting and began feeling like home. He earned the trust of the villagers, built a close bond with his students and became deeply involved with the school. The school itself underwent a visible transformation. From improving its surroundings to introducing greenery and making the campus more welcoming, Sohan Lal worked to create an environment where children would feel proud to study. His teaching style, too, became a talking point. “People would often say, ‘Mandala school de bache alag hi disde hai (Mandala schoolchildren look different),” Sohan Lal recalls. For him, that was the greatest reward — children who carried themselves with confidence and discipline. In his school, instead of conventional prizes, students who consistently submitted quality homework were rewarded with steel plates and bowls, engraved with their names and the school’s name. Last year, 26 of the school’s 80 students were selected for the awards for their excellent work during the summer holidays, fulfilling a promise Sohan Lal had made to them. The idea had a personal connection. During his own childhood, he remembered schools rewarding students with utensils. For Sohan Lal, the initiative was not about the value of the prize. It was about making children feel that their hard work mattered. Credit war erupts over stadium inauguration Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 4 A credit war has erupted over the inauguration of the renovated Shaheed Darshan Singh Kaypee Stadium at Mithapur here. After AAP’s Jalandhar Cantonment halqa in-charge Rajwinder Kaur Thiara inaugurated the stadium, local Congress MLA Pargat Singh said the facility, spread over around eight acres, had been renovated at a cost of Rs 6.75 crore provided during the Congress government. Pargat said AAP leaders had no moral right to inaugurate it when their government “had not spent even a single rupee on it”. Pargat said even the plaque put up at the stadium did not carry his name, despite the stadium being located in his constituency. “The project had taken off in 2020 and more than 80 per cent of the work was completed during the Congress government. The work was approved under the Smart City project. The stadium has a hockey and a football ground. No other AAP leader, including the city Mayor, was invited for the inauguration.
