INBRIEF 3 BOOKED FOR STEALING RATION Phagwara: The Bilga police have booked three migrants for allegedly stealing ration items from a company mess. Investigating Officer (IO) Amandeep Singh said the accused were identified as Rakesh Kumar, Deepak Kumar and Raja, all natives of Bihar. Suresh Bhat, manager of the MKC Company base camp in Poadhara village, complained to the police that the accused allegedly stole ration items worth Rs 5 lakh from the company mess between March 1, 2025, and August 2, 2026. The IO said a case under Sections 306 (theft by a clerk or servant of property in the possession of the master) and 3(5) (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the BNS was registered against the accused. OC MAN HELD FOR GARLAND THEFT Phagwara: The Nakodar City police have arrested a man for allegedly stealing a money garland from Murad Shah Darbar. Investigating Officer (IO) Sukhwindar Singh said the accused was identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Kalu, a resident of Kotha Guru Ka village in Bathinda district. Gurmail Singh, a resident of Uggi village, complained to the police that the accused had allegedly stolen a money garland from the shrine. The IO said a case under Sections 331(3) (lurking housetrespass), 305 (theft in a dwelling house) and 317(2) (dishonestly receiving stolen property) of the BNS was registered against the accused. The stolen garland was recovered from him. OC TWO BOOKED ON CHARGE OF ASSAULT Phagwara: The Shahkot police have booked two persons for allegedly assaulting a villager. Investigating Officer (IO) Parjindar Kaur said the accused were identified as Paramjit Singh, a resident of Baupur village, and his brother, Sona Singh. Jagdish Singh of the same village complained to the police that the accused allegedly attacked and seriously injured him. The IO said a case under Sections 115(2), 117(2) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 3(5) (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the BNS was registered against the accused. OC MAN ARRESTED UNDER NDPS ACT Phagwara: The Mehatpur police have arrested a man for allegedly selling intoxicating tablets. SHO Labh Singh said 43 loose intoxicating tablets were recovered from the possession of the accused, identified as Rajveer Ram, alias Ranjha, a resident of Umrewal village. The SHO said a case under Sections 22, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against the accused. OC City roads cry for urgent repairs as deep potholes, poor drainage raise accident risks Rishika Kriti Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 9 Despite repeated patchwork by the Municipal Corporation (MC), several roads across Jalandhar have turned into accident traps, with deep potholes, craters and loose gravel making daily commuting a risky affair for residents. Several stretches have remained unattended for weeks and are in dire need of repairs. Uneven surfaces, loose gravel and inadequate street lighting make these roads particularly hazardous at night, increasing the risk of skidding and accidents, especially for two-wheeler riders. Among the worst-affected stretches are the road connecting the bus stand to BMC Chowk, Alaska Chowk, Ladowali Road near the railway crossing, Shastri Chowk, Transport Nagar, Lamba Pind Chowk, parts of Railway Road and Kishanpura. Gurdeep Singh, a resident of Aman Nagar, said, “The service lanes connecting Pathankot bypass to Hoshiarpur Chowk and Lamba Pind are in deplorable condition.” He further said, “After the death of 68-year-old Vijay Mahendru on August 11 near Lamba Pind Chowk, when his two-wheeler fell into a water-filled open drain, the authorities started installing interlocking tiles to address the waterlogging issue. However, the measures have failed to provide much relief, and the roads continue to deteriorate. During rains, navigating these stretches becomes a nightmare.” The Municipal Corporation, however, attributed the worsening condition of several roads to waterlogging caused by inadequate drainage infrastructure. Rajnish Dogra, Superintending Engineer, Municipal Corporation (B&R wing), Jalandhar West and Cantonment, said, “The absence of road gullies in some areas leads to rainwater accumulation as there is no proper outlet. This eventually damages the road surface. We have premix material available and carry out patchwork whenever damaged roads are brought to our notice.” Rahul Dhawan, Superintending Engineer, Municipal Corporation (B&R wing), Jalandhar North and Central, said repair work had remained suspended for the past two to three months due to rains. “Now that the weather has cleared, we will take up repairs on stretches along the overbridge road. Repair work on the Sodal road near Doaba Chowk is already underway,” he said. Woman dies by suicide in Hoshiarpur village Truck hits scooter, one killed Three members of victim’s in-laws’ family booked According to a complaint lodged by Gurditt Singh of Giganowal village, his daughter Navjot Kaur allegedly ended her life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in a room on the second floor of her in-laws’ house. The complainant alleged that she was distressed over harassment by her in-laws. The police have booked Surjit Singh and Bhupinder Singh, both residents of Jallowal, and Parvinder Kaur, alias Pinky, wife of Gurinder Singh, a resident of Mona, all members of the victim’s in-laws family. Further investigation into the case is in progress. Woman’s phone stolen at Phagwara bus stand Woman duped of ~3 lakh after caller fakes son’s accident amid the rush. The woman later approached the police and reported the incident. She also requested that the CCTV footage from the bus stand be examined to help identify those involved in the crime. The incident has raised concerns over passenger safety at the busy bus stand, particularly during peak hours when heavy crowds can make it easier for pickpockets and snatchers to operate. According to the complaint, the accused appeared to have taken advantage of the rush as passengers boarded buses. Residents and commuters have urged the police and bus-stand authorities to strengthen surveillance and maintain a visible security presence, especially around boarding points. They also called for closer monitoring of suspicious individuals moving through crowded passenger areas. Hoshiarpur, September 9 A woman from Pipplawala village was allegedly duped of Rs 3 lakh after a caller contacted her on WhatsApp and falsely claimed that her son had been injured in a road accident and urgently needed money for treatment. According to a complaint lodged with the cyber police, Daljit Kaur received the call on September 7. The caller told her that her son had met with an accident and that Rs 3 lakh was immediately required for his treatment. Panicked by the information, Kaur transferred the money from her bank accounts to the account number provided by the caller without verifying the claim. She later contacted her son and discovered that he was safe and had not met with any accident. The victim then realised that she had been duped in an online fraud. Our Correspondent Phagwara, September 9 At a time when the police are conducting awareness campaigns urging residents to remain alert against theft and snatching incidents, a woman passenger was allegedly targeted by thieves at the Phagwara bus stand. Her purse was reportedly cut with a sharpedged object while she was boarding a bus, after which the accused allegedly stole her mobile phone and fled into the crowd. According to the complaint, the woman had reached the Phagwara bus stand to board a bus for her onward journey. While she was getting onto the bus, she felt someone come close to her. By the time she realised what had happened, her purse had been cut open and her mobile phone was missing. The alleged thieves had reportedly removed the phone from the purse and disappeared Hoshiarpur, September 9 A 35-year-old man was killed after his scooter was allegedly hit by a truck near Naloyian Chowk on the Hoshiarpur-Dasuya road on Wednesday morning. The deceased was identified as Ravi Kumar, a resident of Naloyian Chowk in Ward No. 1. He was reportedly returning home after purchasing milk when the accident happened. Following the incident, residents of the victim’s locality blocked traffic at Naloyian Chowk, demanding action against truck driver. The police reached the spot and assured protesters that strict action would be taken against the driver, following which the blockade was lifted. — OC Kapurthala woman’s marriage to Pakistani man triggers legal battle Ashok Kaura Phagwara, September 9 A Pakistani-origin marital dispute involving a woman from Kapurthala has reached the Lahore High Court, where Nasir Hussain’s first wife, Saima Hussain, has sought legal relief against her husband and Sarabjit Kaur. Saima has reportedly sought Rs 80,000 per month in maintenance, alleging that she and her four minor children were forced to leave their matrimonial home after Nasir became involved with another woman. The dispute reportedly dates back to November 2025, when Sarabjit Kaur, a resident of Kapurthala, allegedly met Nasir Hussain at Gurdwara Sri Nankana Sahib in Pakistan. Sarabjit had travelled to Pakistan with her husband, Prakash, to visit the historic Sikh shrine. According to reports, Sarabjit later embraced Islam, married Nasir and adopted the name Noor Fatima. She subsequently began living with him in Pakistan. The matter came to light after Saima approached the Lahore High Court against Nasir and Sarabjit. Pakistani advocate Ali Chaudhry Sandhu said Saima had filed separate cases seeking maintenance for her four children and challenging her husband’s second marriage. According to the advocate, Saima told the court that Nasir had left her and the children without adequate financial support and had First wife moves Lahore High Court for ~80K monthly maintenance subsequently married again. In the maintenance proceedings, Saima reportedly sought Rs 80,000 per month for the care and upbringing of her four children. Sarabjit Kaur’s conversion to Islam and marriage Sarabjit Kaur’s case involves her reported conversion to Islam and subsequent marriage to Nasir Hussain after her visit to Pakistan. According to reports, Sarabjit travelled to Pakistan on November 4, 2025, to visit Gurdwara Sri Nankana Sahib. She was later reported missing during the trip and subsequently surfaced after marrying Nasir Hussain and taking the name Noor Fatima. The case attracted attention in India and Pakistan because of the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, reported conversion and marriage. After desecration of Ambedkar’s statue in Ludhiana, city on alert; bandh call for today Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 9 Following the alleged desecration of an Ambedkar statue in Ludhiana and the bandh observed in the industrial city on Wednesday, the Jalandhar police have stepped up security around statues of Dr BR Ambedkar across the district. In Jalandhar’s rural areas alone, 76 Ambedkar statues have been identified, with patrol teams directed to maintain a strict vigil at sensitive locations. Several organisations, including the Bhagwan Valmiki Shakti Kranti Sena Punjab and the Bhim Kranti Sena, have called for a bandh in Jalandhar on Thursday from 9 am to 5 pm. The organisations said schools, colleges and medical stores would remain open during the bandh. Meanwhile, BJP leaders led by district president Ashok Sareen Hikki and senior leader Manoranjan Kalia Congress members hold a protest march in Jalandhar. MALKIAT SINGH staged a protest at Ambedkar Chowk, raising slogans against the state government and demanding stringent action against those responsible for the Ludhiana incident. Members of the District Congress Urban also staged a dharna at Bhagwan Valmiki Chowk and later marched to Ambedkar Chowk, where one of the city’s prominent Ambedkar statues is located. District Congress president Rajinder Beri condemned the incident and blamed the state government for the alleged deterioration in law and order. “The incident that took place in Ludhiana is highly condemnable. The law and order situation in Punjab has completely failed. Ever since the Aam Aadmi Party government came to power in Punjab, several such incidents have taken place. We demand the strictest possible action against the person responsible for this shameful act,” Beri said. Jalandhar, a major centre of Dalit organisations in the Doaba region, has several Ambedkar statues. Some have been targeted in the past, with incidents of vandalism reported in the city as well as Phillaur. Harvinder Singh Virk, SSP (Rural), Jalandhar, said no significant bandh was expected in the district’s rural areas but the police had intensified security following the Ludhiana incident. “No significant bandh is expected in Jalandhar’s rural areas tomorrow. But after the Ludhiana incident, our teams are on alert. Patrol teams have been sensitised about the current situation, amidst which strict vigil is being kept on Ambedkar statues across rural areas,” Virk said. Road mishap victim dies during treatment Man held for assaulting cops in bid to free drug peddler Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, September 9 A youth injured in a road accident died during treatment at a hospital in Chandigarh, following which the Garhshankar police registered a case against a tractor driver. According to a complaint lodged by Usha Rani of Bora Driver of tractor that hit victim booked village, she was returning home with her son after collecting milk. When they reached a turn near Ghaggo Guru village, a tractor passing through the area allegedly hit her son. With the help of passersby, Usha rushed her son to the Garhshankar hospital. As his condition was critical, doctors referred him to a hospital in Chandigarh, where he succumbed to his injuries on September 7. Investigating Officer (IO) Varun Patiyal said the accused was identified as Aman, a resident of Rajewal village. Sub-Inspector Shiv Shankar, posted at the Khuhian Sarwar police station in Abohar subdivision, had complained that the accused waylaid and attacked policemen with weapons while attempting to free Jeeta Singh, also a resident of Rajewal village, who was in police custody. Jeeta was wanted in con- nection with a drug-peddling case registered against him in 2003 at the Khuhian Sarwar police station. According to the police, Aman seriously injured the policemen and tore their uniforms. The investigating officer said a case under Sections 262 and 263 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension and of another person), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty) and 221 (obstructing a public servant in the discharge of public functions) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered against the accused and others in connection with the incident.
