Unauthorised parking and other obstructions are also being targeted. The police said the restrictions had been imposed to prevent traffic jams, protect pedestrians from accidents and help curb petty crimes facilitated by overcrowded and obstructed market spaces. Senior AAP leader’s argument with cop caught on camera Tribune News Service Amritsar, September 9 A purported video of senior AAP leader and Majitha Assembly constituency incharge Talbir Singh Gill arguing with a senior police official at the Sadar police station has sparked a controversy, with the footage subsequently doing the rounds on the social media. In the purported video, Gill is heard telling the police officer, “I have seen 50 SPs like you.” Soon after, a threat follows that “he could be put in jail”. The incident reportedly took place after the Sadar police arrested Harpal Singh of Guru Nanak Avenue, Majitha Road, wanted in over seven-year-old case on September 5. The police said Harpal had been declared a proclaimed offender. According to the police, Gill reached the Sadar police station along with some persons after learning about the arrest and sought Harpal’s immediate release. ADCP City-II Sirivennela said there had been a “minor argument” between Gill and the police official over the issue. He said Gill apparently believed that the arrested person could be released at the police station level. Two booked for cheating Our Correspondent Tarn Taran, September 9 The Chabal police have booked two persons for duping a Kot Dharam Chand Kalan village of Rs 15 lakh on the pretext of getting his grandchild recruited in the Army. The complainant, Mangal Singh, told the police that Bikramjit Singh, a resident of Peerewal, Kapurthala district, and Shamsher Singh, a resident of SB Home near Walla (Amritsar), cheated him. “They took Rs 15 lakh from me and failed to get my grandchild recruited in the Army,” he said. Drone seized in Tarn Taran Our Correspondent Tarn Taran, September 9 The police claimed to have arrested three members of an arms smuggling gang from Mari Megha village. Two arrested with 5 kg ICE, 3 pistols; hunt on for key accused Pawan K Jaiswar Tribune News Service Amritsar, September 9 Counter Intelligence (CI), Amritsar, has busted a crossborder narcotics and arms smuggling module with the arrest of two persons and recovery of 5 kg of ICE (crystal methamphetamine) and three foreign-made pistols from them. The accused have been identified as Sohan Singh of Chogawan village and Saleem of Bandala village in Amritsar. The police also seized two 9mm pistols and a .30-bore pistol, along with magazines, and impounded a motorcycle allegedly used for transporting the consignment. According to DGP Gaurav Role of foreign handlers under lens Yadav, preliminary investigation has revealed that the module was allegedly being operated in coordination with foreign-based smugglers. The consignment of drugs and weapons was received and subsequently supplied through local associates. The arrests followed a tip-off that the two suspects were expect- ed to meet near Adda Baoli, close to Mata Kaulan Hospital on Lopoke Road, in connection with the delivery of a consignment of ICE and weapons. CI teams conducted a raid and intercepted the suspects, recovering the contraband and arms from their possession. The police have identified another key member of the module and are on the lookout for him. A probe is on to trace the forward and backward linkages of the network. A hunt to track down foreign-based handlers allegedly coordinating the smuggling operation is also on. A case under the NDPS Act and the Arms Act has been registered. Batala police halt illegal construction Tribune News Service Sri-Hargobindpur, September 9 The Batala police today halted illegal construction in Sri-Hargobindpur. The move follows complaints by locals regarding the construction of shops on PWD land. Ward 9 councillor Chetan Kumar and ex-councillor Sandeep Bhalla said they approached the PWD after the residents complained that Kuldeep Chand, a local, and some civic officials were behind the illegality. Bhalla said, “Four shops were being constructed near a school in the ward.and it was learnt that the land came under the PWD.” The matter was brought to the notice of Sri Hargobindpur SHO, who sent a team to get the illegal construction halted.
