As per the latest SIR draft roll, there are 189 persons, who are above 100 years of age, who would cast their votes in the upcoming Assembly elections. There are over 14,000 voters in the district, who are above 85 years. A district administration official told The Tribune that the latest figure tells that the district having 14 constituencies, is having a total of 189 persons above 100 years of age. Of the voters above 100 years of age in Ludhiana, maximum are from the Dakha constituency, the official said. The district has over 14,000 voters who are aged over 85 years. As the district has 14 constituencies with a high population of voters, it is believed that Ludhiana may be the one having maximum elderly voters. Ludhiana West has a maximum number of 1,562 voters (above 85 years) followed by Gill (1,408 voters) and Dakha constituency (1,408 voters). As per directives of the Election Commission of India (ECI), voters aged 85 years and above have been granted the convenience of casting their votes from the comfort of their homes. In 2024 records, the state had 5,004 voters, aged between 100 years to 119 years, and 205 voters were over 120 years. The figures are expected to witness changes during the present ongoing SIR exercise. During the elections, the elderly are seen being brought to polling stations by their relatives, children and grandchildren. Many of them are unable to walk on their own. Gurpreet Singh from the Dakha area said: “Though the elderly are given the provision to cast votes from their homes, one of our relatives makes sure that she was taken to the polling booth to cast her vote. She is above 100.” Armed men lock up four workers in LPG godown, flee with cylinders, cash Nikhil Bhardwaj Tribune News Service Ludhiana, September 12 Armed masked miscreants carried out a robbery at a LPG godown on Sahibana Road on the night intervening September 10 and 11. They locked up four employees in a room and decamped with gas cylinders, cash and other valuables. According to the complaint lodged by gas agency owner Anupreet Singh, a resident of Sarabha Nagar, around five to seven masked persons broke the locks of the godown and entered the premises. They assaulted four staff members, tied their hands and feet, made them sit on chairs and locked them inside a room. Before fleeing, the robbers damaged CCTV cameras installed at the godown and also took away the DVR to destroy evidence. They made off with a three-wheeler, nearly 30 empty gas cylinders, a bag containing about Rs 27,500 in cash and the mobile phone of an employee, Joginder. The four employees remained locked inside the room till around 11 am on September 11. When the agency failed to contact them and scheduled deliveries of gas cylinders were not carried out, the owner became suspicious and reached the godown. He found the employees tied up and locked in the room. After freeing them, he informed the police. The Jamalpur police filed a case against unidentified persons and launched a probe. PHOTO: ASHWANI DHIMAN P2 3rd Halwara flight cancelled in six days Shivani Bhakoo Tribune News Service Ludhiana, September 12 After cancellation of Air India (AI) flights on September 7 and 9, on Saturday again the morning AI flight from Delhi to Halwara was cancelled. It is for the third time in the past six days that the flight has been cancelled due to which the passengers had to face inconvenience. Not only the passengers are facing difficulties, the cancellation of flights has certainly raised trust issues among residents and frequent travellers. For many, flying from the Halwara International Airport is becoming a hassle rather than convenience. Today, the Delhi-Halwara flight was cancelled again. This being the third cancellation in just six days put 102 passengers in inconvenience. Highly-placed sources said among them, over 50 passengers had connecting international flights. Families arriving at the airport with children had to return home with their luggage. Many passengers had to reschedule their travel dates while others hired taxis charging exorbitant fares for Delhi. Air India flight AI-481, scheduled to arrive in Halwara from Delhi, did not land on Saturday morning. “If flights keep on cancelling like this, people would not like to travel due to uncertainty. The authorities need to take up the matter with the airlines,” said Sonu Nilibar, a local businessman. Ludhiana, September 12 A middle-aged man was found murdered at Silon Kalan near Dehlon, here. His body was found near a canal embankment. The deceased’s head had multiple stab wounds. Body was taken to the mortuary at the Dehlon Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The deceased has been identified as Ruldu Singh (50). He was divorced years ago and had two daughters. His brother Kaka Singh said Ruldu worked as a well digger. He left home with someone on September 10. His bike was found at home. After that he did not return. During a search by his family, Ruldu’s body was found on Friday in a field along the Khanpur canal. As per the complainant, Ruldu was assaulted by unidentified persons. They hit him several times on the head with a sharp weapon. He died on the spot. The police launched an investigation into the matter. “My brother had no enmity with anyone. The person with whom he left home on September 10 could be behind the murder. We are not aware about the man. The police should trace the suspect,” said the deceased’s brother. The police are working to identify them with the help of CCTV cameras installed near the crime scene. a case has been registered. — TNS SEE LIFE WITHOUT SPECS Ludhiana, September 12 A thief targeted the residence of a judge on the Club Road here. Later, he was caught by the police. The incident occurred around 5:30 pm on September 10. ASI Sarabjit Singh, deployed as a gunman for the judge’s security, arrived at the residence and saw a man stealing old taps and other iron items from inside the house. As he tried to apprehend him, the thief scaled the house’s wall. Based on the gunman’s statement, the police swung into action. The Police Division 8, based on the complaint of ASI Sarabjit Singh, registered a case. Acting swiftly, the police apprehended the suspect and recovered a fan and other stolen items during the probe. The suspect has been identified as Lakhan of Fazilka. Investigating officer ASI Gurmel Lal confirmed the arrest and said the suspect was a notorious thief and had several previous cases of theft registered against him.
