Singer booked over ‘weapons display’ during college shoot INBRIEF Aparna Banerji HEALTH & WELLNESS E-RICKSHAW DRIVER ALLEGES ASSAULT Phagwara: A case has been registered on a complaint of Raju, an e-rickshaw driver from Dharkot, Phagwara. The complainant stated that he had objected to a youth allegedly involved in drug use. On September 13, while he was standing near Vishal Mega Mart, the youth approached him and hired his e-rickshaw. The complainant alleged that near Guru Ravidas Mission Hospital on Plahi Road, he called two masked youths who, forcibly pulled him out and assaulted him with iron rods. oc SIX YOUTHS ATTACK SHOPKEEPER Phagwara: The police have registered a case after a shopkeeper alleged that six youths attacked him and fled with cash from his shop. According to the complaint filed by Darshan Lal of village Mithra, six youths allegedly arrived on two motorcycles around 4 pm on September 13. While two remained outside, four entered his shop, damaged property and assaulted him. The youths also took around Rs 4,000 from the shop's cash drawer before fleeing. oc SCOOTER FOUND STOLEN IN K'THALA Phagwara: A case has been registered on a complaint of Heera Lal of Preet Nagar, Kapurthala. The complainant, who runs a bakery shop in Greater Kailash Colony, stated that he had gone to a shop near bus stand to purchase goods. When he came out, he found the scooter missing. OC BIKER ATTACKED NEAR SHALAPUR Phagwara: The police have registered a case on a complaint of Kashmir Singh of Shalapur village. According to the complaint, on September 14 he was returning home after delivering milk. Around 7.40 pm near a bridge, several persons allegedly stopped him. The accused assaulted him with sharp-edged weapons, causing injuries. OC SHOPKEEPER ASSAULTED Phagwara: A case has been registered on a complaint of Anil Kumar of Sarafa Bazaar, Phagwara. He said he was at his shop when a youth entered the premises and assaulted him. The complainant alleged that the youth took away a Samsung mobile phone and attempted to open the shop's cash drawer. The youth fled after the shopkeeper raised the alarm. OC MAN HELD WITH INTOXICANTS Phagwara: The police noticed a youth walking near the Diyalpur railway crossing near Naharpur village and arrested him. They recovered 11 intoxicating tablets from him during a search. oc Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 16 The Jalandhar police have registered an FIR against Punjabi singer Harinder Pal Singh Nijjar following the alleged display of weapons during the shooting of a Punjabi music video at a private college in the city. A video of the shoot, which has gone viral on social media, purportedly shows several men carrying firearms on the college campus.Taking cognizance of the matter, the police have registered an FIR against the singer at Police Station Division No. 1, Jalandhar, under Sections 223 and 190 of the BNS and Sections 25-30 of the Arms Act. Mukhtiar Rai, ADCP-1, Jalandhar, said as seen in the viral video, the singer was shooting a song at the college while some of his associates were allegedly displaying weapons. In the video, Nijjar walks towards a camera dressed in white kurta pyjama as a group of youths walks behind him, weilding guns. A number of men in the group are seen carrying guns during the shoot, inside the educational institute. The Tribune doesn’t independently verify the veracity of the video. The FIR by the police was registered on the complaint of Jalandhar professor and social activist Mandeep Singh. The complaint has been made to the Principal Secretary, Higher Punjabi singer Harinder Pal Singh Nijjar during a song shoot at a Jalandhar college. A video has gone viral on social media. In his complaint, the professor alleged, “The college authorities permitted a commercial song and video shoot on the institute grounds where- in dozens of firearms were openly brandished, flaunted and showcased in complete disregard of academic decorum and student safety.” The complaint termed the incident a “flagrant violation” of the binding directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the policies of the state government, on the display of weapons in public. Jalandhar emerges as BJP’s launch pad for 2027 Punjab poll battle Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 16 The BJP’s decision to conclude its four statewide ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab’ yatras in Jalandhar and host a rally of Union Home Minister Amit Shah on September 30 is not just about its central geographical location. It is more about socio-political messaging. The four yatras, covering all 117 Assembly constituencies and nearly 4,000 km, have been designed to put drugs, crime and corruption at the centre of the BJP’s campaign for the 2027 Punjab elections. Jalandhar occupies an important place in the scheme of things of the saffron party. It is the political nucleus of the Doaba, a region of 23 Assembly seats spread across Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala and Nawanshahr. With its sizeable Scheduled Caste population and strong NRI links, Doaba is being seen as a good launch pad by the party that already has a good cadre and leadership strength in the region. The BJP’s increased attention to Jalandhar has already been noticed as Prime Minis- PM Narendra Modi with Sant Niranjan Dass during his visit to Dera Sachkhand Ballan in Jalandhar. FILE ter Narendra Modi has visited here twice this year. He was here on February 1 on the occasion of Guru Ravidas Jayanti at Dera Sachkhand Ballan and again on July 17 for the inauguration of redeveloped Jalandhar Cantonment Railway Station from where he had also flagged off a train from Amritsar to Varanasi. Choosing the Devi Talab Mandir as the culmination point adds to the political symbolism that the party wants to give. The nearly 200year-old shrine is dedicated to Goddess Durga and is regarded as one of the prominent Shakti Peethas. BJP Punjab general secretary Anil Sarin said, “We chose Jalandhar for a number of reasons. It is a central place of Punjab and it will be best suited for workers and supporters from across Punjab to make it to the event. It is one of the four important cities of Punjab with a good trader and industrial base. Since the anti-drug yatras carry a sankalp, we feel that culminating them at the Shakti Peeth Sri Devi Talab Mandir too will send across the right message.” He added that since he was yet to receive the programme of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, he was not sure about his visit to the temple. In February 2022 ahead of the last Assembly elections in Punjab, Modi had expressed his desire to visit the Shri Devi Talab Mandir during a public address in Jalandhar. He had stated that he could not go because the local police and administration had expressed its inability to make security arrangements. Punjab media head of the BJP Vineet Joshi said, “The exact venue of Amit Shah’s rally is yet to be finalised. It will be along a connecting highway so that the public is able to reach comfortably and there is no parking issue. We also intend not to disturb the internal traffic of the city. Picking Jalandhar as our rally venue has an added advantage for we have a good worker strength for allocating duties and handling all arrangements locally”. Gunfire, vandalism trigger panic in Cantt Jalandhar, September 16 Around 30 youths allegedly created panic in Mohalla No. 30 of Jalandhar Cantonment late on Tuesday night by riding through the locality on motorcycles, indulging in hooliganism and firing several rounds in the air. CCTV footage of the incident purportedly shows bik- ers moving in circles through the area. Residents claimed that the youths were shouting abuses and throwing bricks and stones. The miscreants also allegedly damaged two cars and several two-wheelers before fleeing. The entire episode lasted for over 10 minutes, the residents said. Madhvi Sharma, ADCP-2, Jalandhar, said the police received information regarding a firing incident following a fight in the area. “Our teams immediately reached the spot, inspected the scene. During the preliminary investigation, it came to light that the incident was related to a scuffle between persons residing at the same location. The police have identified the persons involved in the incident, and their names have also been ascertained. She further stated that the accused would be arrested shortly. A detailed investigation is underway, and appropriate legal action would be taken against the accused as per law, she added. — TNS Sept 30 last date for ~40 cr approved to address 2 child marriage cases Class XI subject change traders’ concerns: Panel chief come to light, 1 held Jalandhar, September 16 Students of Class XI under the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) will not be allowed to change their subject, group or stream after September 30, as per the board’s amended examination regulations. The PSEB has now fixed September 30 as the last date for students to seek a change in their subject, group or stream. Such changes can be made only with the permission of the head of the institution. The amendment was approved by the board at its meeting on August 6 and notified by its academic branch on September 11. Under the earlier provision, school heads could allow students to change their subject or group within one month of admission. The revised regulation extends the window up to September 30 but makes it clear that no change will be permitted after the deadline. The board has also barred students from changing their subject or stream in Class 12. Students who want to study another subject can take it as an additional subject. — TNS Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, September 16 Punjab State Traders Commission chairman Anil Thakur today said the state government had sanctioned more than Rs 40 crore to improve markets and address traders’ long-pending problems. Interacting with traders and officials here, Thakur said each district would receive Rs 2 crore for improving basic infrastructure and civic amenities in markets. The funds would be utilised through the Deputy Commissioners on the recommendations of district-level traders’ committees. He said the commission had been holding meetings with traders across the state for the past several months. Around 7,000 complaints and cases had been brought before the commission of which more than 6,000 had been resolved, while action on the remaining cases was under way. Thakur, who also chaired a meeting with District Traders Commission chairman Dri- pan Saini, Market Committee chairman Jaspal Singh Chechi and senior officials, directed departments to dispose of traders’ grievances in a time-bound manner. He also stressed regular monitoring of ongoing market development works and adherence to quality standards. He said the commission was working as a bridge between the government and the trading community and was aimed at simplifying businessrelated procedures and ensuring better market facilities. Hoshiarpur, September 16 The police have registered two separate cases following complaints by the Child Development Project Officer regarding alleged child marriages. One person has been arrested in one of the cases, in which three persons have been named. Child Development Project Officer Raj Kumari informed the Hajipur police that a family from Saryana village had allegedly married off its 14year-old minor daughter. Following an inquiry, the police registered a case. In another case, the officer told the Mukerian police that a complaint regarding a child marriage had been received. The complaint alleged that a minor girl from Usman Shaheed had been married to Harpal Singh, son of Nirmal Singh, of Mahajna Mohalla. The police booked Harpal and Lakhwinder Kaur, wife of Nirmal Singh, of Mahajna Mohalla, and Kulwinder Kaur, wife of Kulwant Singh, of Usman Shaheed. Harpal Singh has been arrested. OC Tennis Ball Cricket introduced in Sangha hockey umpire manager at Asian Games Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan Our Correspondent Phagwara, September 16 MP Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal on Wednesday inaugurated the block-level tennis ball cricket competitions under the Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan at Rampur Sunran village, providing portspersons an opportunity to showcase their talent and compete at the grassroots level. Addressing a gathering after meeting the players, Dr Chabbewal said Tennis Ball Cricket had been introduced for the first time this year as part of the Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan sporting extravaganza. He said the competitions were being organised across all five blocks of Kapurthala district and were open to men and women aged 14 years and above. He said the Tennis Ball Cricket competitions in Kapurthala block were being held on September 16 and 17 at the School of Eminence, Kapurthala. In Phagwara block, matches were being organised at Rampur Sunran, while in Sultanpur Lodhi block, the competitions were being held at Akal Academy School, Sultanpur Lodhi. Similarly, matches in Nadala block were being held at GHS School, Khassan, and in Dhilwan Block at GSS School, Dhilwan.The MP said the matches were being played in a six-over format on a points basis, with top-performing players being considered for selection at the district level. He added that the LBW rule would not apply in these competitions. Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 16 Jalandhar’s Gurinder Singh Sangha has been appointed by the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) as umpire manager at the 20th Asian Games hockey competition that will be held from September 18 to October 3. Sangha is a physical education lecturer at Olympian Manpreet Singh Government Senior Secondary School, Mithapur. Sangha has served prominent international games like the Asian Games, Olympic qualifiers and Asia Cup. “The day I am taken out of the ground is the day I will breathe my last,” said Sangha, expressing his passion, love and admiration for the sport. The 54-year-old international hockey umpire hails from Jandu Sangha in the city. He started playing when he was 13. He studied at Doaba Khalsa Senior Secondary School and played at the school, district, state and national levels. Sangha’s father, who was in the Air Force, was also an international-level hockey player. “I also wanted to represent my country but because of some reasons, I couldn’t do it. That hurt me a lot, but I didn’t want to leave sports. So, I decided to take up teaching and coaching,” he told The Tribune. He has already added several feathers to his cap by winning many accolades.
