Of the five, three have been transferred to other police districts, while two had been sent to the Police Lines, Ludhiana. Action was taken by the Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma during evaluation of SHOs’ performance. Furthermore, during scrutiny, reportedly five more heads of police stations have come under the scanner of the top cop and may face action in the upcoming crime review meeting to be headed by the Commissioner. Swapan Sharma told Tribune that to ensure that SHOs deliver, discharge their police duties with honesty and dedication, he had set as many as 21 parameters related to their police duties. The arrests were made by a team of the CIA staff, Ludhiana, during a special drive against persons involved in robbery, snatching and thefts, being conducted under the supervision of senior police officers. According to the police, acting on a tip-off on September 25, a CIA team arrested the suspects from the Sahnewal area. The accused were identified as Piyush, Anmol Bohat and Avinash Kumar, all residents of Ludhiana. A motorcycle and five mobile phones were recovered from them. A case was registered at the Sahnewal police station in this regard. During further investigation on September 26, the police on the disclosure of the accused recovered seven more motorcycles, a black Honda Activa without registration number and 15 more mobile phones. This took the total recovery to 20 mobile phones, eight motorcycles and one Activa scooter. The accused were produced in a court, which sent them to police remand. Police records show that Avinash Kumar had studied up to Class XI, while Piyush and Anmol Bohat had studied up to Classes IX and X, respectively. The Commissioner added that after scrutinising every parameter, initially a warning is served and if still any police station head fails to meet all parameters, then depending upon the approach of police station heads or lethargic attitude towards the tasks assigned, action is taken accordingly, he maintained. “In the last three months, three SHOs posted in the Commissionerate had been transferred out as they failed to meet those 12 parameters set for them in the drug campaign, while two SHOs were sent to the Police Lines for dereliction of duty. I have zero tolerance against drugs and if any cop is found lethargic on this front, being a head of Ludhiana police, I will not spare anyone,” asserted Sharma. Yesterday Dehlon SHO Inspector Vijay Kumar was sent to the Police Lines for failing to take timely action against three miscreants who were wearing combat uniform and threatening residents for extorting money. They were also seen openly consuming drugs in the area. Ludhiana, September 26 In a sustained crackdown against drug trafficking and crime under the Punjab Government’s flagship campaign ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’, the Malerkotla police have arrested 369 in criminal cases in the past 26 days, including 133 held under the NDPS Act, according to district police data. The drive has been carried out under the overall supervision of Malerkotla SSP Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh, with police teams zeroing in on identified trouble spots, running intelligence-based searches and tightening the noose around repeat offenders through sustained preventive policing. Close coordination between SP (HQ), SP (D) and all subdivision DSPs, along with CIA staff, SHOs and police station teams, has allowed officers to act swiftly on specific inputs and carry out targeted opera- tions. Members of the SSP’s own security detail have also been deployed alongside field teams during operations, reinforcing manpower where needed. Besides the 133 arrested under the NDPS Act, the remaining 225 accused were booked under various provisions of the BNS and other laws. The break-up includes 138 hurt cases, 19 cases relating to crime against women, 14 theft cases and 11 attemptto-murder cases. Eight persons have been booked for forgery, six in road accident cases and five in suiciderelated cases. Four persons were arrested for snatching, three each for murder and rape and two each in travel-agent fraud cases and in kidnapping cases. The remaining 11 accused were booked under other miscellaneous heads — taking the combined tally, along with the NDPS arrests, to 369. The anti-drug drive has featured coordinated Cordon and Search Operations (CASOs) in areas flagged for drug activity. Besides, the police also demolished properties allegedly linked to drug proceeds as part of the campaign. Police-station-wise, Amargarh led with 73 arrests, followed by Sadar Ahmedgarh (66), Sandaur (64), City-1 Malerkotla (59), City-2 Malerkotla (55), City Ahmedgarh (35), Women Police Station (15) and Cyber Crime Malerkotla (2). Separately, 113 persons were proceeded against under preventive provisions during the period under relevant sections of the BNSS. SSP Malerkotla Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh said, “Our focus is to maintain peace, act promptly against criminal activity and remain accessible to the public. The cooperation of residents is particularly important in tackling the drug trade. People should feel confident in approaching the police with information or concerns.” Youth booked on charge of ‘raping’ 18-year-old Tribune News Service Ludhiana, September 26 A case of rape and sexual exploitation has come to light in the city, in which an 18year-old girl was allegedly repeatedly sexually assaulted by a youth, who had promised to marry her. The accused used to take the girl to Rose Garden and force himself on her under the cover of bushes. The girl was found to be pregnant after she complained of severe abdomi- nal pain and was medically examined. On the basis of the mother’s statement, the police yesterday registered a case against the accused, Sohan. In her statement to the police, the victim’s mother said her 18-year-old daughter worked with her as a domestic help. During the course of work, she came in contact with Sohan. The accused allegedly trapped her in a love affair and gave her an assurance of marriage. Around four months ago, Sohan allegedly lured her daughter to the public garden. There, he forcibly established physical relations with her against her consent. When the girl protested, the accused pacified her by saying that he would soon marry her according to customs and rituals. The police said that on the basis of the complainant’s statements, a case was registered and a raid was being conducted at the possible hideouts of Sohan to arrest him. c m y b 18-year-old govt college student dies in accident Tribune News Service Ludhiana, September 26 An 18-year-old government college student died after being seriously injured in a road accident on the Mall road here. Bhavika, a resident of Dugri, was riding her scooter near Fountain Chowk when a Canter hit her vehicle. Due to the alleged negligence of the Canter driver, the scooter came under the front wheels of the vehicle. The girl sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). Her condition deteriorated and she breathed her last on Saturday morning. Cops from Police Division-8 have taken the body into custody and sent it for a post-mortem examination to the Civil Hospital. They said further action would be initiated soon on the basis of a complaint lodged by the family members of the deceased. Following the accident, the cops impounded the Canter and had launched efforts to arrest the accused driver, who is reportedly on the run. It also recovered 23 mobiles from their possession, which they had looted from city residents in recent past. The nabbed accused have been identified as Manpreet Singh of New Basant Vihar, Noorwala Road, Manish Kumar of New Shivpuri and Rohit Luthra of Preet Vihar, Haibowal Kalan. Additional DCP-1 Sameer Verma while addressing a press conference stated that the accused were habitual offenders involved in thefts and snatchings reported at various police stations in Ludhiana district. Acting on secret information, a team of Daresi police station carried out the operation. After identifying the location of the accused, a police party conducted a raid and nabbed the accused. According to police records, Manpreet has previous cases against him, including one under the NDPS and attempt to murder. Manish faces four cases of NDPS, snatching, etc. No previous cases were listed against Rohit. After coming out on bail, the accused continued to commit crime. ADCP Verma said that the accused had committed over 24 mobile phone snatching incidents in city. Some of the looted mobile phones were also sold by the accused reportedly to mobile shop owners, who once identified will also face action. The ADCP said the recovered mobile phones would be handed over to the owners after identifying them.
