Reduced costs apply from midnight today. Soon after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced the move, 13 BJP-ruled states cut local sales tax and VAT. Haryana, Uttarakhand and even Himachal Pradesh — ravaged by rain — joined the league. Jammu and Kashmir, under Governor’s rule, also followed suit. In Haryana, diesel and petrol would cost Rs 71 and Rs 79 per litre post-revision. The move would cause an annual burden of Rs 1,920 crore on the state exchequer. While BJP chief Amit Shah rushed to congratulate the Centre and CMs of BJP-ruled states, the Congress trashed the move as “meagre”. Jaitley earlier said fuel cost reductions would work out through an excise duty cut of Rs 1.50 per litre on petrol and diesel and absorption of Re 1 per litre by oil companies.
