LUDHIANA | MONDAY | 4 OCTOBER 2021 Planned to perfection Mona The city of Chandigarh is planned to human scale. It puts us in touch with the infinite cosmos and nature. It provides us with places and buildings for all human activities by which the citizens can live a full and harmonious life. Here the radiance of nature and heart are within our reach. — Le Corbusier On World Architecture Day, celebs talk about the landmark they most admire in City Beautiful WEBSOLUTE FUN Madres Muppets Haunted Mansion Halloween vibes Haunted house, ghosts and more; here’s a look at the top OTT releases this week OCTOBER 8: Muppets Haunted Mansion on Disney+ Hotstar O N World Architecture Day we celebrate Chandigarh and its architectural gems, which make our city unique! The Capitol Complex The Open Hand Monument ICONIC LANDMARK STUNNING STRUCTURES TRULY SYMBOLIC NO ROOM TO CRITICISE GREAT PRECISION Chandigarh’s planning and greenery is charming. I grew up in the city. I spent many years at Punjab University and was always inspired by the architecture of Gandhi Bhawan. It is simplistic, modern and beautifully built around a water body with lush green lawns around the perimeter. It is indeed one of the iconic landmarks of City Beautiful. One structure I love the most in Chandigarh is the Open Hand Monument, which I have often visited with my parents. They told me that it stands for unity. Sculptures made from urban and industrial waste make the Rock Garden my second favourite. Chandigarh is an example of stunning modern architecture and urban planning. Chandigarh, the dream city of India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Nehru, and planned by the famous architect Le Corbusier, is known as one of the best experiments in modern architecture in the 20th century in India. It is symbolic of the newly independent India. I love Sukhna Lake; it is an integral part of Chandigarh life. I love my school St Stephens’s and DAV College the best. I love the vibe of Eiffel Tower at Leisure Valley. The skating rink of Sector 10 is special to me for that is where I trained for national and international events, and won medals. I hate the fact that Le Corbusier and his team have made the city so perfect that there’s no room to criticise! I greatly admire the Tower of Shadows, created by Le Corbusier, the master architect of the City Beauitiful, at The Capitol Complex. It makes me wonder about the imagination and precision of the creator. When I first saw it, not even a shred of sunlight reached me as I walked through it. — Gunjan Utreja, actor — Ankit Arora, actor — Siddharth Ohri, actor — Sahil Khattar, actor — Sapna Sikarwar, actress Time to heal Rashmi Rocket’s director Akarsh Khurana says his film is a dramatised account of women athletes’ struggles Britney on suspension of her dad, Jamie Spears, as conservator Britney Spears may be in celebration mode following the removal of her father as the conservator of her estate after a period of 13 years, but the singer says it will take time before she fully recovers from the battle. On October 2, two days after a judge suspended Jamie Spears from the conservatorship that has controlled the pop star’s personal life and finances for over a decade, Britney shared an uplifting message on social media about the next chapter of her life. “Although there is change and things to celebrate in my life, I still have a lot of healing to do,” she captioned it with an upward view of a large tree on Instagram. “Thankfully I have a good support system and am taking time to understand… it’s ok to slow down and breathe. Only through self love I can pray ... love ... and support others in return.” On September 29, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny agreed with a petition from Spears and her attorney that Jamie Spears needed to give up his role as conservator. The decision came months after the 39-year-old singer pleaded for her father’s removal in dramatic court hearings. Britney has been actively celebrating the decision on social media, recently sharing photos from a tropical vacation with her fiance Sam Asghari. —IANS ‘It’s a human story’ His upcoming film Rashmi Rocket draws inspiration from not one but many women athletes who are subjected to the archaic but “widespread” practice of gender testing in sports, says director of the film Akarsh Khurana. Set in Kutch, Gujarat, Rashmi Rocket stars Taapsee Pannu in the title role of a gifted athlete who faces discrimination for not being conventionally feminine. Khurana, known for Karwaan and Mismatched, has directed the movie which is based on an original story by south filmmaker Nanda Periyasamy. Khurana shares, “It is not based on the life of one person. It is inspired from the struggles of various female athletes, Indian and international. The interesting thing is that where they have a situation like gender testing and things like that, our awareness is only restricted to a couple of high-profile cases that may have come in the news. But what’s most interesting is that Nanda, who is from Tamil Nadu, shared that there are so many cases in villages and other states that we aren’t even aware of. All of this often goes on under the radar but this is a widespread practice.” He adds, “Besides the fact that some people in real life have undergone this practice, this is a completely fictionalised version of events. It’s a completely different story... The circumstances of the gender test and events after the test are completely created and it is not like anyone’s life.” When he boarded the project, the Mumbai-born director says he knew the film was exploring an issue that needed a sensitive approach. Khurana was not looking for the story to be done in a melodramatic way. He adds, “It had to be done in a gentler, subtle manner. We have made an entertaining and engrossing film which will perhaps leave you to think about.” The film also stars Priyanshu Painyuli, Supriya Pathak Kapur, Abhishek Banerjee, and Supriya Pilgaonkar. Khurana, who has described the movie as a blend of a courtroom drama, sports story and mature romance, has enjoyed the process of “organically” incorporating these elements into the script. The film is written by Periyasamy, Aniruddha Guha and Kanika Dhillon. All in all the filmamker calls Rashmi Rocket a human story and adds, “It’s about a woman who becomes a celebrated athlete and eventually gets into a situation where she needs to go to court. All through that there is a wonderful relationship not just with a man, but also her mother. She has an almost enviable relationship with the man in her life, played by Priyanshu.” Produced by RSVP and Mango People Media, the film is heading for a digital premiere on ZEE5 on October 15. Even as theatres in Maharashtra, a prime market for Bollywood, are set to reopen from October 22, the director believes that the makers have taken a “sensible decision” to release Rashmi Rocket on the streaming service. It was in the best interest of the film as they didn’t want it to “get lost” in the release calendar loaded with big projects like Sooryavanshi, Laal Singh Chadha, 83, Bunty Aur Babli 2, and Shamshera. — PTI c m y b Starring in this Halloween special alongside fan-favourite Muppets are Will Arnett (as The Ghost Host), Yvette Nicole Brown (as The Hearse Driver), Darren Criss (as The Caretaker), and Taraji P Henson (as The . Ghosts Shoojit Sircar didn’t want to go ‘wrong in understanding’ Udham Singh Thorough research Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar says his only thing that came to his mind while making the upcoming movie Udham Singh was to not go wrong in terms of how he understands the freedom fighter. Talking about the fear of having eyebrows raised over the tale of Udham Singh, Sircar said: “Absolutely could have happened whenever we would have made this film. Liking or not liking is a very personal and subjective issue. That did not come.” “One thing that came (in our minds) is that we should not go wrong in terms of how we understand him (Udham Singh) as a freedom fighter or the legend of Sardar Udham.” The film, starring Vicky Kaushal, focuses on the undeterred mission of Sardar Udham Singh to avenge the lives of his beloved brethren, who were ruthlessly murdered in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919. Sircar added: “We should not go away from what he was. That understanding and the integrity should be there in us also. We definitely tried that.” Produced by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar, and directed by Shoojit Sircar, the movie also stars Shaun Scott, Stephen Hogan, Banita Sandhu and Kirsty Averton in pivotal roles and Amol Parashar in a special role. —IANS Something special Tahir plans a surprise for mom’s 60th birthday Angad, Neha welcome second child Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi welcomed their second child on Sunday.
