Is it not better to move on in peace? I F marriages worked just by exchanging vows on the wedding day, the world would have been a happier place! As the ongoing legal battle between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp draws attention, with public changing sides and perceptions, we look at other celebrity divorces and break-ups that took an ugly turn. It’s difficult for public figures since media trial starts way before the legal battle. No wonder Amber Heard fired her entire PR team owing to negative publicity and trolls in the defamation suit filed by her ex-hubby Johnny Depp. Although the divorce took place years back, Depp’s fresh claim is that Heard’s article in a US daily had cost him the sixth instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Actor Aditya Deshmukh says, “It’s not easy being public figures. Break-ups of celebrities are always highlighted. Be it any legal battle, it’s troublesome. But for celebs, work involves travelling and hectic shooting schedules that ❝ IT’S NOT EASY BEING PUBLIC grow up in; a place where private family matters aren’t thrown on the world stage for all to poke and pick apart. In an effort to protect that space for her, I agreed to not contest claims.” The split is reminiscent of power couple Brangelina (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie), who ended their relation after Brad’s alleged fight with EVERYTHING IS UP FOR SCRUTINY. MEDIA AND TABLOIDS SHOULD RESTRAIN FROM GOSSIPMONGERING, BUT THE CASE IS ALWAYS THE OPPOSITE. THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE IN THE FUTURE. BREAK-UPS OF CELEBRITIES ARE ALWAYS HIGHLIGHTED. BE IT ANY LEGAL BATTLE, IT’S TROUBLESOME. BUT FOR CELEBS, WORK INVOLVES TRAVELLING AND THAT MAKES COURT APPEARANCES EVEN MORE DIFFICULT. ❞ ADITYA DESHMUKH, ACTOR ❝ MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL ABUSE IS COMMON, YET IT GOES UNSEEN AND UNTREATED. I HAVE WITNESSED A FRIEND SUFFERING IN HER RELATIONSHIP WHEN THE BOYFRIEND CONTROLLED EVERY ASPECT OF HER LIFE. ❞ SUNIDEE CHAUHAN, ACTOR adopted son Maddox on the family’s private plane. When counting amicable separations, some turn toxic after the split, as happened after Kim Kardarshian and Ye (Kanye West) got divorced. While Kim is happy to move on and is dating Pete Davidson, Ye has time and again accused his ex-wife of not adhering to co-parenting norms. Abhishek Kumarr says, “As a public figure, everything is up for scrutiny. Media and tabloids should restrain from gossip-mongering, but the case is always the opposite. This needs to change in the future. Batalvi James David Vance, author of a bestselling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, has won Senate Republican primary in Ohio TWITTER HANDLE @JDVANCE1 When former US President, Donald Trump made an endorsement for author and venture capitalist James David Vance, no one would have believed that he would go on to win the Senate Republican primary in Ohio. Besides being a venture capitalist, JD is the author of a bestselling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, which was also made into a 2020 Netflix film, directed by Ron Howard. With him being the central character, played by Gabriel Basso, the film traces the Appalachian values of his Kentucky family and the social problems of his hometown of Middletown, Ohio. ‘ From Make America Great Again’ to now ‘Save America’, it seems former President of United States Donald Trump’s endorsement worked wonders for Vance, as the former got a towering influence over the Republican Party. While all his archrivals were trying hard to win over Trump’s endorsement, Vance had an additional set of worries, his erstwhile-anti Trump speeches, which were used against him. Reportedly, Vance succeeded in winning over Donald Trump Jr ❝AS A PUBLIC FIGURE, leading him to communicate to his father how he was aligned with Trump on populist issues. A sit-down chaperoned by Peter Thiel, Vance’s former employer and tech billionaire, paved the way for his big win. Thiel also made record-breaking donations to support Vance while he was running low on money and also trailing in polls. Vance was leading the crowded pack of primary candidates with 32 per cent of the votes about two hours after polls closed. After taking on Josh Mandel, who was long presumed to be the front-runner in the crowded Republican field in Ohio, Vance win has a bigger set of goals lined up for him ahead this year. He will now face Democratic congressman Tim Ryan in November to determine who will fill the seat of retiring Republican Senator Rob Portman. INDIAN CONNECTION Wife of JD Vance, Usha Chilukuri Vance, is an Indian-American. The two met in Yales when they were studying law and have been married since 2014. She is a litigator in the San Francisco and Washington DC offices of Munger, Tolles & Olson, a law firm. In his memoir film, Hillbilly Elegy, actress Freida Pinto played the role of Vance’s girlfriend. — Sheetal c m y b Very few Punjabi poets have got the love and affection across the world like Shiv Kumar Batalvi; on his 49th death anniversary today his wife recollects fond memories. The actor-producer interactedwith his audience via the podcast Laal Singh Chaddha Ki Kahaniyaan, where he recollected everything it took to film the forthcoming release. — TMS LEGAL TANGLE Bollywood too has had its share of bad divorces. There was a messy legal battle between Karisma Kapoor and Sanjay Kapur. While Karisma pressed harassment, domestic violence, infidelity and dowry charges, Sanjay labelled her as gold-digger. Tennis Player Leander Paes and actress Rhea Pillai’s live-in relationship went for a toss when the former moved court seeking the custody of their daughter, following which the actress slapped a domestic violence suit. Paes called the jury’s decision ‘seriously prejudiced’, as Rhea won. Actress Sunidee Chauhan opines, “Mental and emotional abuse is common, yet it goes unseen and untreated. I have witnessed a friend suffering in her relationship when the boyfriend controlled every aspect of her life.” Popular couples of television industry Nisha Rawal and Karan Mehra, Poonam Pandey and Sam Bombay, Rashmi Desai and Nandish, Shweta Tiwari and Raja Chaudhary are others who went through a tough time during legal battles. Actor Hrishikesh Pandey explains, “There has to be a different law to protect the men. There will always be lawoffenders, irrespective of gender. One of my friends went through tough time after his wife pressed false charges.” Isn’t it better to move on and let everybody be happy? Take a cue from some amicable de-coupling stories, from Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne, to Arjun Rampal and Mehr, Farhan Akhtar and Adhuna, to Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, to Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora, and Kalki and Anurag Kashyap! It’s a sentiment Madhuri Dixit has teamed up with Indo-American rapper, songwriter and singer Raja Kumari, as she pays tribute to her Indian heritage with her latest song Made In India.
