FORECAST MAINLY CLEAR SKY INBRIEF FIVE INJURED IN ROAD MISHAP Jalandhar: Five persons of a family were injured while three passengers had a miraculous escape when two autos they were travelling in rammed into each other on Ladowali Road on Saturday night. Those who received injuries were residents of New Sant Nagar here. They took the auto-rickshaw from their residence to the railway station as they had to catch the train for Jammu. When they reached near Ladowali Road, a speeding auto came from the wrong side and hit the vehicle from the front. The auto driver was allegedly in an inebriated state and fled after the accident. The injured members were rushed to the civil hospital. The police on the statements of those injured registered a case and impounded both the vehicles. TNS FARM FIRE BURNS CATTLE SHED Mahilpur: Four cows sustained injuries and two dogs were burnt alive after a fire broke out in a cattle shed in Tuto Mazara village on Sunday. Thirty quintals of straw was reduced to ashes in the fire. Jaswinder Singh Jassi, owner of the cattle shed, told that someone had set fire to wheat straw in the fields adjacent to his enclosure and suddenly the fire reached his cattle shed. The fire was so fierce that before anything could be done, four of his cows, including three milch cows, were scorched and two dogs were burnt to death. He said he had recently bought around 30 quintals of straw which was burnt to ashes. Mahilpur police have registered a case against unidentified people. They said due to this scheme, about 20,000 families will be deprived of their livelihood. The Atta-Dal scheme was running very well, under which wheat was supplied once in six months, they said. While the cases of cyber frauds related to debit, ATM and credit card fraud and card cloning continued to increase and transform before Covid19 crisis, it seems the pandemic have further worsened the situation by giving swindlers the chance to come up with more sophisticated and professional cyber attacks. The data of cyber crimes available at the National PREVIOUS CASES REPORT AT 1930 IMMEDIATELY: ACP ■ Five residents based in Jalandhar, Adampur, Hoshiarpur and other districts have fallen prey to WhatsApp call fraud and lost over Rs 5 lakh. The victims of this fraud received a WhatsApp call or a message, from someone claiming to be a family member or friend from abroad in need of help. ■ Another city-based resident Sachiv Kumar became victim of a fake loan assist App. The staff of the fake app tampered with his Aadhaar, PAN cards in a bid to extort money from him. He was so badly trapped in this loan scam that he attempted to commit suicide. Tribune News Service Jalandhar, May 8 The Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar, on Sunday launched a special drive to ban entry of heavy vehicles in city from 6 am to 10 pm. “We will ensure that no heavy vehicles enter in the city during this time for averting any mishap,” said Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Singh Toor. He told the cops that if vehicle was violating these norms then they were duty bound to take severest of severe action against them. He said stern action should be taken against erring vehicles as per law so that it act as deterrent for others in the future. He said no one would be allowed to put grave risk to the life and property of residents. He categorically said senior officers of the police, including him, would be personally supervising this drive aimed at the safety of the residents. Toor said he has asked the officers of the department to conduct surprise checks during the drive for proper implementation of the law. CYBER AWARENESS MUST: EXPERTS ACP (Security) Karan Sandhu said the residents must report cyber crimes of any nature at 1930 toll-free helpline. He said they can register complaints anytime by dialling 1930 as police personnel were available at the Cyber Crime Unit 24X7. He said a well-equipped and trained team of the cyber crime cell is working round-the-clock to save the hard-earned money of citizens. ~67L DEVELOPMENT WORKS LAUNCHED Hoshiarpur: Initiating development works in Ward Nos. 6, 10 and 11 of the city at a cost of Rs 67.98 lakh, Cabinet Minister Brahm Shankar Jimpa on Saturday said the AAP government had completed 50 days and the people of the state were happy with the decisions taken by the CM. He said 26,454 posts lying vacant in different government departments would be filled without indulging in any corrupt practices and without any bias. The minister started new tubewells in Ward No. 6 to be installed at a cost of ~20.09 lakh, development work of Dashmesh Park costing ~12.95 lakh in Mohalla Vasant Vihar of Ward No.11, construction of streets in New Civil Line at a cost of ~18.45 lakh and in Ward No.10 and construction work on different streets at a cost of ~16.49 lakh. Talking to The Tribune, cyber security experts in the city said that across the globe, governments, businesses, and citizens were facing an everincreasing risk from cyber threats. They said the problem in India was that a majority of the people lag behind in cyber-security awareness. “Over 40 per cent young Indians are using the same password for a lot of online services, which makes it easy for hackers to hijack accounts, websites, etc with ease,” they added. On being asked the possible reasons behind the rise in the cyber crime, ACP Karan said the dependency on the internet for all our needs and the lack of awareness regarding cyber security are the main reasons behind people falling prey to such frauds. He said the most common complaint they receive is that of phishing where customers are called by swindlers to ask for their personal financial information like OTP CVV, etc. , He further said people should avoid sharing their personal information with customer care persons, especially those whose number they take from the internet. “They should keep the number of bank officials and seek assistance from them in case of emergency. Besides, they should keep strong passwords for their social media accounts and ensure their privacy is enabled to prevent their Ids from being hacked and misuse of their images for creating Fake ID. Cricket tourney postponed, fresh schedule soon Tribune News Service Jalandhar, May 8 Two days after Jalandhar Tribune published a report regarding dates of U-19 interdistrict cricket tournament being clashed with ongoing CBSE Class XII (Term-II) examinations, the tournament committee of the Punjab Cricket Association has postponed the tournament. The Class XII students, who were going to participate in the tournament, had said they were in a fix as appearing in board exams and the tournament was equally important to them. They said they have exams on May 13, 20, 30 and June 7, whereas the tournament was scheduled to begin from May 14. Elated over the news of the postponement of tournament, Kavish Mehra, a student, said he was thankful to the cricket association for postponing the tournament as students were worried about their performance both in exams and the tournament. “The news has come as a big relief to hundreds of students and we are hopeful that the tournament committee will plan the new dates keeping in mind the board exam schedule,” he added. The new schedule of the tournament will be released soon. Army jawans pay tributes to Subedar Hardeep Singh at Baranda village in Hoshiarpur on Sunday. Subedar Hardeep cremated with full military honours Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, May 8 Subedar Hardeep Singh, who died in the line of duty along the LAC in Arunachal Pradesh, was cremated with full military honours at his native village Baranda in Hoshiarpur on Sunday. Hardeep was posted in 15 Punjab Regiment in Arunachal Pradesh and laid down his life in the line of duty on May 6. His son Barinder Pal Singh lit the pyre. On behalf of the Chief Minister, Cabinet Minister Brahm Shankar Jimpa along with MLAs Jasveer Singh Raja and Karmaveer Singh Ghumman paid homage to the martyr. Jimpa said the Punjab Government stands with the bereaved family and would extend every possible support them. He said Subedar Hardeep Singh was a brave soldier and the nation will forever be indebted for his great sacrifice. He said the Chief Minister has announced an ex-gratia grant of ~1 crore and a government job to the family of martyr. Military, civil and police officers and dignitaries from various fields also paid tributes to the departed soul. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son. And no one is coming to save us from this hell,” rues a resident from Ratan Nagar. He lives near Kala Sanghian drain (ganda nala). Cleanliness of the drain has always remained one of the biggest issues in the city. But it seems that officials have turned a blind eye towards the matter and they hardly care of the residents living nearby who have been suffering a lot. Mosquitoes, overgrown weeds, unwanted reptiles and malodorous smell emanating from piles of garbage in the drain have become a part of their daily lives. The councillor of the Ward No. 78 has held several protests, wrote numerous letters to the authorities and have had lots of meetings with the MC officials, but to no avail. The drain covers Guru Nanak Nagar, New Guru Nanak Nagar, Ratan Nagar, Shiv Nagar are some of the areas in the ward. The drain has not got cleaned in the last two years, claimed the councillor. Archana Bala, a resident living in the area, said she cannot take both her children out because of the grave situation. Her home is right next to the drain which has made situation worse for her. “Face of my 10-month-old daughter is filled with mosquito bite marks. The area we are living is so messy, unclean and smelly that it is not for her at all to grow in such an environment,” she said. Archana Bala’s husband runs a small general store in the area. It is like a task for him to sit in his store all day long. “The smell is so bad that it seems impossible to work now,” he said. Another resident Pawan Kumar owns a small stationary shop in the area. “Stagnant water in the drain has been troubling us.
