However, lack of dedicated cycle tracks is a major hurdle for cycling enthusiasts. There are several options to construct cycle tracks such as near the banks of UBDC canal but as of now, there is only a 2-km long track near the Trillium Shopping Mall. Under the Smart City projects, the administration had proposed a dedicated cycle track network spanning 23.2 km across the city. It is estimated at a cost of ~19.22 crore. Under this, two kinds of tracks will be laid with ample width. On narrow roads, INBRIEF SAFAI SEWAKS TO BURN SDM’S EFFIGY Tarn Taran: The safai sewaks who were allegedly removed from service and the representatives of the organisations supporting their agitation lodged a strong protest here on Friday against the alleged ill-treatment meted out to them by the local SDMcum-Administrator of the Municipal Council, Tarn Taran. The organisations have declared to stage a dharna in Tarn Taran on June 7 and burn the SDM’ effigy. The removed safai sewakas are on warpath since April 4 demanding to reinstatement their services. Different Scheduled Caste and Valmiki organisations have extended support to their agitation. Mani Gill, Baba Pankaj Nath, Baba Vikrant, Deepak Teja and other leaders of the agitating organisations said they had gone to the SDM-cum-Administrator to resolve the issue, when they were ill-treated and threatened by the officer. The leaders of the safai sewaks said they were working with the Municipal Council for the last more than one year and were not given their salary for the last three to four months. The SDM said the agitating safai sewaks were not on the pay roll of the Municipal Council. OC GHALLUGHARA: COPS ON TOES Tarn Taran: The district police are keeping a strict vigil to check suspected movement of anti-social elements during the ‘Ghallughara Week’. DSP (security) Tripta Sood herself led the teams to check vehicles in the district on Friday. The DSP said nakas were installed at different crossings in Tarn Taran besides at Khebbe Dogran, Saidpur, Jhabal and other points. The DSP said as many as 200 vehicles were checked at different crossing in Tarn Taran town and documents were checked by the team led by Sub-Inspector Baljit Kaur, SHO, Tarn Taran city. The DSP said besides checking vehicles, suspected persons, too, were observed closely. Minor among 2 raped in city Tribune News Service Amritsar, June 3 Mohkampura police have arrested two Bihar migrants for allegedly raping a minor girl. The incident came to light when the victim complained of pain in the stomach. She revealed the incident to her parents following which a complaint was lodged with the police and the accused were arrested. The medical examination of the victim was also got conducted by the police. Those arrested were identified as Ram Parvesh Rai of Malakpur village in Darbhanga of Bihar, who is living in Bharat Nagar on Batala Road and Arjun of Gonda in Bihar, living in Gokal Vihar on Batala Road. A case under Sections 376-D, A, 450 and 506 of the IPC and Section 6 the POCSO Act was registered against them. The police Road mishaps claim two lives Tribune News Service Amritsar, June 3 Two persons lost their lives in separate hit-andrun cases in rural belt in the last 24 hours. Yakub Masih (60), a resident of Wadala village, died after an SUV hit him here late on Wednesday evening. Anosh Gill, son of the deceased, told the police that they run a meat shop in the village. He said as per routine, he went to take his father from the shop on his bike. He said his father was crossing the road to get some sweets from a bakery for her granddaughter. He said as he came out of the shop and was crossing the road, a Scorpio came and hit him. The unidentified driver fled with the SUV towards Fatehgarh Churian side. He said he rushed his father to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Majitha police have registered a case under Sections 304-A and 279 of the IPC against the unidentified driver. Meanwhile, Mani Kumar (25), a resident of Putlighar area, succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital here on Thursday. He was critically injured when a ‘gharooka’ ran over him on May 22 near Beas. He was going from Amritsar to Nakodar on his bike. He said his bike suddenly skidded and an unidentified ‘gharooka’ ran over him. He was rushed to a private hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Doctors and environmentalists, too, are urging people to adopt cycling to avoid traffic congestion. "There are several tracks announced by the government in the past under the Smart City project. Some proposed tracks are under construction. Dedicated tracks should be available alongside all roads like those available in Chandigarh. Otherwise, the general public will not take to cycling on a routine. The infrastructure should be developed, so that cyclists feel safe. The city administration is only focusing on those cyclists, who have adopted it for fitness," said Dr Gurpreet Singh, a cyclist. The burglar confessed before the media and people that he and his brother committed theft. Alleging police inaction in the initial stages, residents alleged that they arrested two persons, when they were dividing the booty among themselves. One of them was held, while his brother managed to flee. Kamlesh Kumar, owner of the house, told that the family had gone to pay obeisance at Baba Budha Sahib and Gurdwara Shaheed Baba Deep Singh. Work on smart road project going on at a snail’s pace Charanjit Singh Teja Tribune News Service Amritsar, June 3 Work on the redevelopment of the outer circular road as a smart road is going on at a snail’s pace and there is little hope that it would be completed within the stipulated time. As per the government’s announcement during the inauguration of the ~118.65crore project, it is supposed to be completed within 28 months i.e. till January 2023. The construction work on 7.4km outer ring road was inaugurated by then Cabinet Minister OP Soni on September 18, 2020. During the past 21 months, the condition of the outer ring road has not improved much. Municipal Corporation Joint Commissioner Hardeep Singh inspected the work on Wednesday and asked the MC Joint Commissioner Hardeep Singh and MLA Inderbir Nijjar during an inspection of the smart road in Amritsar. Lights would be installed on road sides and a parking lot would also be established to facilitate travellers and streamline the traffic. The project is one of the major initiatives taken under the Smart City Mission and under it, desilting of sewerage would also be done, along with laying of new sewage lines as per requirements. All electricity wires and other cables would be taken under- ground, eliminating the need of digging for lying cable lines in future. Besides, all electricity poles and transformers would also be removed and replaced with new compact substations. Footpaths for pedestrians, parking facilities for cycle rickshaws and auto-rickshaws would also be set up. Landscaping would be done for beautification of the road, along with installation of street furniture, establishment of green belt, bus stop shelters, lights, sign board and digital advertising boards. New street vendor zones would also be provided to vendors where they can put up stalls without encroaching upon footpaths. Post-construction, the respective firm would handle the maintenance work for the next five years.
