No deaths were reported in the district and death toll stood at 1, 578. The Kapurthala administration reported one new Covid case on Satuday. With this, the district tally reached 23,910. Meanwhile, no new death was reported in the district and the death toll stands at 583. TNS CONG COUNCILLOR’S NEPHEW ARRESTED Jalandhar: The police have arrested Nitin Chadha, alias Neetu, who is a nephew of a Congress Councillor (Jalandhar North) on the charge of selling illicit liquor on Saturday. The police received a tip-off that Nitin would cross Patel Chowk to handover the consignment to his customers. Following which, the police team laid a trap. During inspection, a bag full of liquor bottles was seized from his possession. A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act has been registered against him. TNS 1 HELD WITH OPIUM, ~20K DRUG MONEY Hoshiarpur: The CIA staff arrested a smuggler and seized 1.5 kg opium and ~20,000 drug money from his possession. Inspector Balwinder Pal said they received a tip-off and a naka was laid in the area. He said Amit Nayyar, a resident of Chand Nagar, Bahadurpur, was intercepted and during search of his scooter they recovered 1.5kg opium. Balwinder said they also recovered ~20,000 drug money from the accused. On Friday evening, a horse carrying iron bars (weighing 2,604 kg) collapsed on the road at Football Chowk. A city-based activist, Dr Namita Singh, who witnessed the incident rushed to rescue the animal. She parked her car and after noticing that there was no water with the cart owner, she arranged a bucket full of water. “I found that the law permits load of maximum 700 kg for a horse and 500 kg for a mule. This animal was made to carry 2,604 kg of iron bars (receipt confirmed the load),” she wrote on the facebook page “NoticeBoard Jalandhar by Tinu Luthra”. OC PAGE 3 SUNDAY | 12 JUNE 2022 | JALANDHAR Tension grips college campus Jalandhar, June 11 Tension gripped a private college on Friday evening after a girl student reportedly uploaded a post against the Muslim community supporting the remarks made by suspended BJP leaders—Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal— against Prophet Muhammad. The Kashmiri students lodged a protest after which the college authorities asked the girl to apologise for her post. She was also made to delete her post. The police had to be called in to pacify both sides. The college management said the students were told to stay calm and refrain from making any communal remarks on the campus. — TNS Now, RPOto issue 600 Police Clearance Certificates per day MEA increases quota from 450 slots sensing demand Tribune News Service Jalandhar, June 11 In a major reprieve to residents seeking Police Clearance Certificate (PCC), the quota of Regional Passport Officer to issue the PCC has been enhanced to 600 slots from 450 per day. Regional Passport Officer Yash Pal today said the decision has been taken by the Ministry of External Affairs to facilitate the masses after the request for the same was made by the Jalandhar Regional Passport Office. “This will help in getting the PCC in a smooth and hasslefree manner,” said Pal. He said the RPO had been continuously making endeavours to provide better service to people and had sent a detailed proposal to the ministry for enhancing the quota. Earlier, the appointment quota was 135 slots per day but with the The move will help in getting the PCC in a hassle-free manner. He cautioned the people to stay away from middlemen as the RPO has not authorised any such institution or middleman. Notably, there has been an unprecedented rise in the PCC appointments throughout the country and adequate arrangements have been put in place to meet this surging demand through a record increase in slots in comparison to the earlier capacity.
