The Goindwal Sahib police arrested Gurpal Singh and Barkat Singh of Mundapind with 33 gm heroin. They were caught when they were on the way to deliver the drugs. In another case, the Goindwal Sahib police arrested Angrej Singh of Gujarpura village with 25 gm heroin. Meanwhile, the Patti City police arrested Ravi Singh, Naresh, Harwinder Singh and Karambir Singh of Patti town and recovered eight grams of heroin from their possession. OC 5,200 LITRES OF LAHAN SEIZED Tarn Taran: At least 400 gm of heroin, a revolver, four cartridges and 5,200 litres of lahan were seized during a search operation launched by a joint team of the Excise Department and the police at Kot Dharam Chand Kalan on Monday. Excise Inspector Jatinder Singh said the recoveries were made from an abandoned place near a village pond. Of the total seized lahan, 2,100 litres was found from the house of five accused, namely, Harwinder Singh Preet, Nirmal Singh, Prem Singh, Harpreet Singh and Narinderpal Singh. Harwinder and Nirmal were arrested, while the remaining three absconded from the spot. Gaurang Gupta finished a close second with 99.9388 percentile and Anmol Deep Singh Dhillon a closer third with 99.93811 percentile. This year’s JEE-Main results saw many students scoring a perfect 100 percentile and the city too had many students scoring above 99 percentile. Nimish Sehgal, a student of Aakash Institute at Amritsar, secured 99.5 percentile, while Arshita Chattha also scored 99.5 percentile in session one of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main, 2022, much to the elation of his parents and the entire staff of the institute. AIT ex-chief’s arrest: Vigilance finds irregularities in allotment of tenders Amritsar, July 11 The Punjab Vigilance Bureau, while investigating into the alleged irregularities by former Amritsar Improvement Trust (AIT) chairman Dinesh Bassi in allotment of residential plots, found a number of anomalies in the allocation of tenders for development works in the city and Verka milk booths. Bassi was produced in the local court after expiry of his police remand. The court further extended his remand by two days. Vigilance officials pointed out that during probe several evidences came to light which pointed towards alleged connivance of officers or employees of the AIT in allotment of commercial and PAGE 3 chairman. During probe, the vigilance found many irregularities, requiring a thorough inquiry. He said further investigations may unearth a multicrore scam in the trust. “Names of various construction firms and contractors have also cropped up,” he added. He said as per preliminary investigation, Bassi had undertaken development work of the Community Hall, New Amritsar, Ram Talai Mandir, GT Road, Amritsar, Valla Stadium at Verka, seven acres park at New Amritsar, an underbridge at Jorha Phatak, truck stand scheme and a smart government school at Chheharta from 2019 to 2021. The records of these works were being procured to investigate irregularities thoroughly. The spokesperson added that around 37 firms were enlisted by Bassi and they were registered as contractors against government norms without obtaining required documents from these firms. These contractors were allotted tenders/works worth crores by Bassi, allegedly by abusing his position. “Bassi had allegedly allotted various commercial/residential plots to his close associates in an illegal manner. Their allocation was carried out in violation of government norms. Besides, files of some commercial/residential plots went missing from sale branch of the trust,” the spokesman said, adding that the vigilance had sought the record from the trust office for thorough investigation. He was brought on transit remand from Mansa. The Punjab Police had brought him on production warrant from Delhi in connection with the murder of Punjabi singer and Congress leader Sidhu Moosewala. After expiry of police remand, he was produced in the Mansa court from where the Amritsar rural police brought him in transit remand. Senior Superintendent of Police, Amritsar Rural, Swarndeep Singh said the police got his police custody in a five-year-old case registered with the Beas police here. In the case, alleged gangster Shubham Singh, an accomplice of Bhagwanpuria, was freed by armed persons when they had boarded a bus to Amritsar. Sukhjinder Singh, ASI, was shot in the leg. He was heading a police team escorting the “gangster” to the Amritsar courts from the Kapurthala jail for a hearing. They were travelling in a Punjab Roadways bus. They also met the church committee of the Central jail which informed them about the problems they were facing in the jail. The court complex was turned into a fortress and a heavy police force was deputed to facilitate his production. As hearing in the case got delayed, the police did not allow lawyers and even judicial officials and litigants from entering the premises till the time Bishnoi was in the court complex. Even cops who were seeking entry into the complex to join their duties were seen arguing with policemen. He added that the association had written to the high court’s inspecting judge questioning why the gangster was being given the VVIP treatment. Parminder Singh Bhandal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), said the police had made appropriate arrangements in the court due to security reasons. He said they had planned for his early hearing, but due to certain legal issues, it got delayed. He said no such problems were faced by lawyers and judicial officials as he himself let them entered the complex. Even the route was diverted for entering the court complex. Tribune News Service Amritsar, July 11 Four persons died, while one was injured in road mishaps in the Khalchian police station area here late last evening. Two persons were killed on the spot when a truck collided with a car near Butari village on the Amritsar-Jalandhar highway last evening. A car occupant got injured in the mishap. The deceased were identified as Sanjinder Singh and Jobanpreet Singh, both residents of Tarn Taran. The injured, Rajandeep Singh, was rushed to Baba Bakala Civil Hospital. According to the police, the car collided with a truck. The truck driver escaped from the spot with the vehicle. In another incident, Cha- ranjit Singh of Pheruman village lost his life when he was run over by a bus. The incident took place when the victim was on the way to Khalchian from Pheruman on a motorcycle. Similarly, a scooter-borne person identified as Harpreet Singh died when his scooter was hit by an unidentified vehicle on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. The victim had gone to attend a birthday party. According to the police, he was apparently drunk and lost his balance after hitting an unidentified vehicle. The incident occurred on the Loharaka road. The police have registered three separate cases and further investigations were in progress.
