The deceased has been identified as Armandeep Singh. His father Parsa Singh said he left for work on Wednesday morning. In the evening, he got a call from someone informing him that his son had committed suicide. Armandeep’s kin said his mother also committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance around two years ago. The boy was under depression since then. ASI Tarsem Singh said they did not recover any suicide note from the spot. Suspecting no foul play, inquest proceedings were initiated under Section 174 of the CrPc. TNS CENTRAL JAIL INMATE ATTACKED Ludhiana: A jail inmate, Harpreet Singh, was attacked in the Central Jail, Ludhiana, on Tuesday night. The inmate, an undertrial in a murder case, was taken to the Civil Hospital for treatment. Harpreet said around two weeks ago, he lodged a complaint with the jail authorities against some inmates who were selling drugs in the jail, but they didn’t pay heed to his complaint. Yesterday night, the inmates, against whom he lodged a complaint, attacked him while he was asleep in his barrack. Harpreet alleged that the jail inmates attacked him with sharp spoons. As a result, passengers had to face a lot of inconvenience. Passengers got stranded at the bus stand. Most of them were forced to keep waiting for buses outside the bus stand. Moreover, a number of buses were parked on the main road, leading to traffic jams. Passengers said they faced inconvenience due to the closure of the bus stand. Contractual employees had closed the bus stand several times earlier too, but the government seemed to be failing to pay any heed to their demands. Ludhiana, July 13 Ludhiana district has ranked second last in the state with 90 per cent of institutional deliveries during the past five years, a national survey has revealed. The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), conducted by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, through the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, has also indicated that Ludhiana’s average of 90 per cent was four per cent less than the state average of 94 per cent institutional deliveries in the past five years. While Nawanshahr topped the state with the highest 99 per cent institutional deliveries in the past five years, Mansa remained the laggard with the lowest 89 per cent institutional deliveries during the past five years. The current survey, fifth in the NFHS series, which provides information on population, health and nutrition for India and each state and Union Territory, with districtlevel estimates for several important indicators, a copy of which is with The Tribune, showed that 10 per cent of women, who had a live birth in the five years preceding the survey that was delivered in a health facility, received financial assistance under the Centre’s Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY). The objective of each successive round of the NFHS has been to provide high-quality data on health and family welfare and emerging issues in this area. The study further revealed that 90 per cent of mothers had a postnatal check after their last birth and 88 per cent of mothers had a postnatal check within two days of the birth, as was recommended, in the state. It indicated that 88 per cent of births in public health facilities and 91 per cent of births in private health facilities were followed by a postnatal check for the mother within two days of birth, compared with 60 per cent of home births. While 86 per cent of last births in the five years preceding the survey received a health check in the first two days after birth, 35 per cent of home births received a health check in the first two days after birth. Tribune News Service Ludhiana, July 13 The Sarabha Nagar police have registered a fraud case against unidentified persons who attempted to cheat employees of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) here. The case was registered on a complaint of Dr Inderjit Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the university. In his complaint, the Vice-Chancellor said some miscreants were using his photo on a WhatsApp account and demanding money from university employees. When he came to know about the matter, he immediately asked the staff to avoid sending money as the WhatsApp account was fake. Police officials said after registering a case, they had launched a probe to identify the miscreants. They would be arrested soon. AAP MLA argues with woman cop Confronts officer for not informing her before search op Tribune News Service Ludhiana, July 13 The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from the South constituency, Rajinderpal Kaur Chhina, publicly argued with a woman IPS officer, ACP , Industrial Area B, Jyoti Yadav. The MLA, while trying to show her supremacy over the police, openly questioned the officer that why she didn’t inform her before conducting a search operation in her constituency. ACP Jyoti, along with a large number of police personnel, had gone to conduct a search in Shimlapuri and its adjoining areas. When the MLA came to know about the search operation, she immediately reached the spot and questioned the ACP . “How can you conduct a search operation in my constituency without informing me or taking me along? You should have informed me in advance,” the MLA questioned ACP Jyoti. The ACP said she was not asked by seniors to take the MLA along for search. “I am asking you again, who is the MLA of this area,” said Chhina. The ACP said: “I have been directed by the Police Commissioner (CP) and the Joint Police Commissioner (Rural) to conduct a search in the area to nab drug smugglers and anti-social elements. Family members of these girls, all natives of Nepal, have lodged a missing complaint at the police division 6. Among the missing girls, two are sisters, while two others are their cousins. All of them were living together here only. After the matter came to fore, Inspector Madhu Bala, SHO of Police Division 6, visited the house of the missing girls and spoke to their parents. The victims’ family members suspected that some criminals seemed to have kidnapped them to fulfil their nefarious designs. “All four girls left for work on Sunday evening, but didn’t return home. We have been searching for them for the past three days, but to no avail. Finally, we lodged a complaint today,” said the victims’ family members. The SHO said CCTV cameras of the area were being scrutinised and area residents were being questioned to get any clue to get any clue about the missing girls. Ludhiana, July 13 The Special Task Force (STF) wing of the Ludhiana police arrested a smuggler and recovered 1.25 kg of heroin from his possession here today. The suspect has been identified as Narinder Singh Manna (40), a resident of Moti Nagar. The ACP STF Davinder , , Chaudhary, and the STF incharge, Inspector Harbans Singh, said a case had been registered against the suspect under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. ACP Chaudhary said they got a tip-off that the suspect was a notorious smuggler and he was already facing cases of smuggling among others. He was on way to deliver heroin to his clients. Accordingly, the STF laid a naka at a strategic point. After intercepting the suspect, the STF nabbed him and recovered heroin from his possession. During preliminary questioning, the suspect confessed that he was into the smuggling trade since years. He was already facing three cases of drug smuggling and three cases of other crimes. He also admitted that he was a drug addict. STF in-charge Harbans said they would seek his police remand to bust the entire supply line and nab other heroin suppliers involved in the racket. PO in drugs case nabbed The STF Ludhiana, on , Wednesday arrested Sanjiv Kumar Sunny, a resident of New Gobind Nagar. He was a proclaimed offender in drug smuggling case. In May 2019, the police had arrested three smugglers, including Sunny’s wife, with 2.2 kg of heroin. He later managed to give the police the slip and was absconding since then.
