According to the MSW rules, Aujla: AAP workers ‘pressuring’ school heads to become SMC chairpersons Tribune News Service Amritsar, July 21 Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla in a tweet on Thursday alleged that AAP supporters and workers in some areas were pressuring principals and head teachers in government schools to appoint them as chairpersons of the school management committees (SMCs). The allegations come as the District Education Office is under the process of receiving nominations for the school management committees for all schools in the district. The process of choosing members of school management committees is defined by the Directorate, Education Department, Punjab, and SMCs are responsible for over- seeing developmental and learning work plans for each school at the district level. Tagging Education Minister Harjot Bains and CM Bhagwant Mann, MP Aujla tweeted, “@BhagwantMann It has been noticed that some of AAP supporters & workers are torturing principals and head teachers of government schools to appoint them chairpersons of the SMCs. Most astonishing fact is that they are not at all eligible for these. I request @CMOPb and @harjotbains to control the misguided ambitions of MLAs pressuring principals and head teachers to defy guidelines. Novices need to learn that there is something known by the name of constitution and guidelines.” The District Education Office spokesperson said they had not received any official complaint in this regard. “The process of filing nominations and approval for SMC members is carried out keeping in mind defined regulations by the Directorate Education Department. The approvals will be done by July 26, 2022, by the District Education Officer after thorough scrutiny,” said the spokesperson. PHOTOS: VISHAL KUMAR 30 minutes of rain lays bare admn’s monsoon readiness Manmeet Singh Gill Tribune News Service Amritsar, July 21 After receiving crores of rupees for development and upgrade of basic infrastructure, the city still does not have an effective stormwater drainage system, which can stop streets and roads from turning into virtual pools during rains. Half an hour of heavy rain is enough to expose the vulnerability of city roads to waterlogging. As most of the streets and roads are inundated, it takes hours for the water to drain out and traffic to return to normalcy. Heavy rain like the one witnessed in the city on Thursday is very troublesome for residents as water enters houses in low-lying areas. The ineffective stormwater sewer system coupled with failure of the local civic body to conduct A man tries to cross an inundated road in Amritsar on Thursday. timely de-silting has only aggravated the problem. A perfect example of lack of planning on the part of the government is the art heritage, which was constructed and beautified at a cost of nearly Rs 300 crore. Everything is fine on the art heritage street near the Golden Temple until it rains and force tourists to take off their shoes due to waterlogging here. Even the storm sewerage installed on the 30-km stretch of the Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) route has failed to provide any respite to residents from the problem of waterlogging, especially in areas on the GT road, Batala road and Mall Road. With no ‘kuccha’ space left in the city, rainwater gets accumulated on roads. In the absence of an effective stormwater sewerage, which can drain out the water instantly, water remains on some roads from six to 12 hours. Residents of old walled city areas are even more troubled as the area does not have any stormwater sewerage facility. In these areas, the old sewerage system doubles as a storm sewerage system. The residents demanded that the local municipal corporation must take steps to properly utilise the stormwater sewerage system in the city.
