Operators for tubewells: F&CC LPU Chancellor addresses meeting fails to reach consensus Oxford students, faculty UID number plate project reviewed Tribune News Service Jalandhar, November 10 A meeting of the Municipal Corporation’s Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) was held today. The decision to give approval to deploy operators looking after every five tubewells in various areas could not be taken again. Notably, there are around 422 tubewells in five zones in the city. A tender had been floated months ago regarding the deployment of operators, but as per the information some councillors had opposed it. Today, the proposal could not get a go-ahead from everyone in the meeting. No approval means another wait for two or three months till the next tender. Already the contractor has stopped working due to no payment by the MC. As per the information, more than Rs 3 crore is still to be paid to the contractor, which is why he (contractor) is not willing to work anymore. Jalandhar, November 10 The MC Commissioner held meeting with Smart City officials and Property Tax wing officials today. The aim was to review the Unique Identification (UID) number plate project, which has been lying pending for long. Officials present in the meeting said the commissioner has advised to start an app, and it will become easier for them to know about the defaulters. “Apart from this, the status report of the project was sought and he asked to speed up the process,” an official said. The main aim of the UID project is to bring transparency in property tax collection. Survey of the entire city was done in 2016 in which over 2,50,000 properties were identified. It is reported that over Rs 1 crore was given to a private compa- c m y b ny for carrying out the survey. But years passed and there is still no headway. Last year, Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company started doing a survey ‘again’ to verify if there is any update on the survey work done in 2016. Once the survey is completed and above 2,50,000 lakh properties will be checked again, then UID number plates will be given to every household and property and these number plates with a particular QR code will be installed outside every property. The owner will be able to pay property tax by clicking at that QR code. The information will then be saved with the Municipal Corporation, which will help the officials recover property tax without any problem or any proper information. — TNS Jalandhar, November 10 Coming as a proud moment for Punjabis, Lovely Professional University (LPU) Chancellor and Rajya Sabha member Dr Ashok Kumar Mittal recently got a chance to address the students and faculty of University of Oxford’s prestigious Oxford Town Hall. Dr Mittal touched on the topic: “Will universities be disrupted by 2030?” He spoke, “Education has not changed in tens of thousands years. It’s still about a teacher speaking in front of students, students taking notes and then getting tested on it. While the medium may have changed from in person to online, the basics remain the same. The need of the hour is to change education not just in terms of medium, but also in terms of how it is delivered. Education needs to be immersive. Many skills are better learnt at work than at school. Education needs to be ‘gamified’. Kids spend hours playing games online.” Further questioning all LPU Chancellor Dr Ashok Kumar Mittal at the University of Oxford. attendees, Dr Mittal continued: “Can we make education as fun-oriented as Angry Birds? Don’t we learn more about British history from Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ than from history books? We are at the MySpace of education. There will be a Facebook of education. Will that come from Oxford or India?” Dr Mittal, who is also a member of the Parliamentary Committee on External Affairs, is on a 10-day foreign tour. He has also visited Ire- land to sign an MoU with a university. He will also be speaking at the House of Lords and will be meeting UK business house owners at the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI). Addressing a gathering at the University of Oxford was a momentous occasion not only for Dr Mittal, but also for India as the University of Oxford has a history of inviting only the world’s distinguished visionaries to address its students and staff. — TNS
