The investigating officer, Nirmal Singh, said the suspect was identified as Ashok Kumar, alias Sokha, a resident of Kanganna village. 80-kg raw liquor and equipment for brewing were recovered. A case under Section 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act has been registered against him. OC CASE AGAINST ONE FOR CHEATING Phagwara: The Shahkot police booked a person for breach of trust and cheating. The investigating officer (IO), Nirmal Singh, said the suspect had been identified as Gurpal Singh of Shahla Nagar, Malsian village. Pawan Kumar, a resident of Har Krishan Nagar in Phagwar, complained to the police that Gurpal signed an agreement with him for selling his 13 kanal and one marla land situated on the MalsianKanganna road and received Rs 25 lakh from him as advance money, but did not register a sale deed and fled away to the US. The IO said a case under Section 406 and 420 of the IPC had been registered against the suspect. OC ONE BOOKED FOR TRAFFICKING Phagwara: The Shahkot police have booked a travel agent on the charges of trafficking, cheating, and breach of trust. The investigating officer (IO), Balvir Chand, said the suspect had been identified as Chamkaur Singh, a resident of Chak Bahmanni Khurd village. Chindar Singh of Gurre village complained to the police that the travel agent had sent his wife to Dubai on a work visa, where she was confined by him and he demanded money for releasing her. The IO said a case under Sections 370, 420, 406 of the IPC had been registered. OC SUICIDE ABETMENT; HUSBAND IN NET Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police arrested the husband of a deceased woman on the charge of abetment to suicide. The investigating officer (IO), Iqbal Singh, said the suspect had been identified as Gagandeep Singh, a resident of Janta Nagar, Ludhiana. Rekha Ranni had complained to the police that her daughter, Lovpreet Kaur (25), was married to Gagandep Singh in 2021, but soon after the marrige her in-laws started harassing her for dowry because of which she attempted suicide. The SHO said 75-kg poppy husk was recovered from the possession of his mother, Gurdev Kaur, on November 3, 2021, but he managed to flee from the spot. Communist and revolutionary organisations today held a convention and a march in the city seeking justice for the Latifpura residents. During a state-level convention held at Bhai Jwala Singh Hall of the Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall, they condemned the displacement of people in Latifpura in Jalandhar. They demanded the rehabilitation of displaced persons and sought action against police officials who misbehaved with the residents during the drive. They also extended support to the people’s struggle seeking the closure of the Zira mill. The convention was held by the ‘Fascist Hamle Virodhi Front’ and leaders of the front condemned fascism and fascist policies. Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the speakers also raised the issue of the Sikh prisoners who were not being released. They also expressed concern over the land of Punjab turning infertile and nonimplementation of MSP on crops other than paddy. The day temperature saw a dip of 2°C coming down to 15°C. On the other hand, the minimum temperature rose by 2°C to 10°C since it was a cloudy day today. Owing to rain, fewer people ventured out. The markets had very few customers. The parks and playing grounds remained vacant. Since it was a holiday on account of the Parkash Purb of the tenth Sikh master Guru Gobind Singh, even the government offices remained closed. The rain, however, brought cheer to the wheat farmers as the rain in the peak winter season is beneficial for the crop. There is a prediction of cloudy, rainy days for the next three days too. Jalandhar, December 29 Thirteen years ago, Buta Ram, the head teacher of Government Primary School (Girls), Rurka Kalan, took an initiative of celebrating ‘Dhiyan Di Lohri’. The intent behind the move was clear — to make people understand the importance of a girl child and promote gender equality. “When my daughter was born, I celebrated her Lohri and people were shocked. I was surprised at their reaction and this made me decide that I would celebrate Dhiyan Di Lohri every year to make people aware of it,” said Buta Ram. This year, the event will be held on January 4. More than 3,000 school girls under the age of 19 years have arrived to participate in the event from across the country. The event representing DAV’s 15 sports zones was declared open by chief guest Justice (Retd) N K Sud, vice-president, DAV College Managing Committee (DAV CMC), New Delhi. The students are participating in 24 games. The games are being organised under the aegis of DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi. Jalandhar, December 29 A person was arrested by the Jalandhar police with 50 intoxicating tablets and a two-wheeler here on Wednesday. A person riding a twowheeler without registration number tried to flee from the spot upon seeing the police near Rampur Chowk. The police caught hold off the person and on being frisked, 50 intoxicating tablets where recovered from his possession. He was identified as Teerath Kumar of Baupur. A case under Sections 22, 61 and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 was registered against him at the Lambra police station. Having retired as a lecturer in Punjabi from the Education Department, Chandigarh, her 10 stories and anthologies have already been published. She said after the demise of her mother in her childhood and brother during her early college days, she turned very emotional and started penning down her feelings in the form of poetry and essays. She said that after completion of her MEd degree, she started working as a teacher of Punjabi under Dr Neena Saini the Education Department of Chandigarh, but continued with her passion for literature. Some of her works are, ‘Rangrez’, ‘Dukhant’, ‘Dhiyan Bhainan Sanjhian’, ‘Guldan’, ‘Kalman di sanjh’, ‘ Kavyanjali’ and ‘Vehre diyan raunkan’.
