Less of drama, more of music Director Kasi Lemmons does not leave the viewers teary eyed in the end by showing Whitney’s accidental death, but rather on a high note MOVIE REVIEW Sheetal Celebs pay tributes as football legend Pele passes away HIS MAGIC WILL LIVE ON Brazilian star soccer player Pele passed away on December 29. He died due to multiple organ failure. He was 82. The football legend was undergoing treatment for colon cancer. News of his demise was shared on his official Instagram handle. The post read, “Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pelé, who peacefully passed away today. On his journey, Edson enchanted the world with his genius in sport, stopped a war, carried out social works all over the world and spread what he most believed to be the cure for all our problems: love.” Several celebs took to social media to pay tributes to the legend. Abhishek Bachchan posted a long note that read, “As a child, my father introduced me to Pelé and his magic. And thus began a lifelong love for football. We had shelves filled with VHS tapes of his and the Brazilian team’s matches. I would religiously watch them with my father. A magician we’ve all been blessed to witness. A few years ago, whilst visiting India I somehow managed to get an autographed jersey of his. Rest in Peace to the greatest! @pele.” Vicky Kaushal wrote, “When Maradona died, Pele said he hopes some day he’ll ‘play ball with Maradona in the sky’. Today is that day. ” AR Rahman, Anupam Kher, Shilpa Shetty and many others also mourned the sad demise of the legendary footballer. —TMS The musical drama based on the life of legendary American singer Whitney Houston has less drama and more music. Telling the tale as it should be told, the movie is a heartfelt tribute to the life she had led and songs she had left for generations to come. Naomi Ackie has given the performance of a lifetime with this one and definitely nailed Film: I Wanna Dance With Somebody Whitney’s perDirector: Kasi Lemmons formance of the lifetime in a wellCast: Naomi Ackie, Tamara Tunie,Ashton Sanders, Stanley written climax. She achieved the impossible feat of singing back-to-back three tough medleys, I Loves You Porgy, And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going and I Have Nothing. For those who have lived in Whitney’s time would surely savour the moments from her life. But it’s an interesting watch for even those who didn’t grow up hearing ‘The Voice’ of Whitney. The star of the film is Naomi, for no one else could have played Whitney better. And, of course, and Clive Davis, who launched Whitney and also put his money as pro- c m y b ducer in the film. Tamara Tunie as Cissy, Whitney’s mother, also left an impression and so did Stanley Tucci (Clive) and Nafessa Williams (Robyn Crawford). As for as the Whitney’s troubled childhood, that left an impact on her relationship with husband Bobby Brown, played by Ashton Sanders, has definitely been addressed. But the drug problem of Whitney has been underplayed in the film. Whitney, raised with strict catholic beliefs and surrounded by patriarchs like father John Houston and Bobby, also speaks of the time she lived in. The same for her closeted lesbian relationship with creative director Robyn. There is another character in the show, Whitney’s music, which expresses all the emotions the songstress and heroine went through. If you want a front row ticket to Whitney’s concerts or her life, this is the film for you! And, to know why she is still celebrated even though she died young at 48.
