OC ONE KILLED, ONE HURT IN PHAGWARA Phagwara: A motorcyclist was killed while his pillion rider son sustained injuries when a speeding vehicle hit their bike near village Rawalpindi on Phagwara-Hoshiarpur road on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Sukhwinder Singh. His injured son Arshdeep was admitted to the local Civil Hospital but was referred to Ludhiana for treatment. The police have registered a case. OC Jalandhar, January 19 A policeman and three other persons died on the spot when an Innova met with an accident at Hamira village in the wee hours of Thursday. A police party that reached the spot saw mangled remains of the car and bodies and car parts strewn around. The cop, who died in the accident, has been identified as Hardev Singh, a resident of Beas. He was posted with the traffic police in Jalandhar. The other occupants of the car who died in the accident include Harjit Singh, Jatinder Kumar (both residents of Beas) and Lovely, a resident of Jandiala Guru. The police were informed at 2.30 am on Thursday that an Innova car had met with an accident on the highway. When a police party reached the spot, they received information that an Innova car (PB-04-7900) was heading from Amritsar to Jalandhar when the accident happened. The accident was so gruesome that the front of the Innova was totally crushed due to the impact of the accident. Four persons died immediately thereafter and their remains were in a very bad shape, indicating a high-impact crash. While the police said the accident happened due to the car being hit by another vehicle, there is no information so far about what hit the car as no other vehicle or person was present at the site. The police said the bodies had been sent for the post-mortem to the Civil Hospital, Kapurthala. ASI Lakhwinder Singh, of the Subhanpur police station said, “It is yet unknown which other vehicle hit the car. The accident had also taken place much before the police were informed. TRIBUNE PHOTO Kapurthala man run over by vehicle in US Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 19 A Kapurthala native died after he was hit by a car in the US, leaving his village and family back home shattered. Sukhwinder Singh, a 53-yearold man and resident of Fresno city in California, was returning home after having his meal when he met with an accident. A resident of Tandi Dakhli village in Kapurthala, his family has been inconsolable ever since the news reached them. Mangat Singh, the maternal uncle of the deceased, said Sukhwinder had worked in the Indian Army for 18 years while here. He left for the US in 2011 in pursuit of a better future. Mangat informed he was currently residing at Fresno City in California where he pursued a vocation as a truck driver for a living. His wife Surinder said her son informed her last night at 1.30 am that her husband had died in an accident in the US. She said he had gone to the US 12 years ago. Amritsar resident nabbed with 260-gm heroin when they apprehended Jatinder coming on foot from the Verka Plant side service road. “During checking, 260 gm of heroin was recovered from his possession,” he said. During interrogation, Jatin- der confessed that he used to procure drugs from a local smuggler for Rs 2,200 or Rs 2,500 per gram and further used to sell it for Rs 4,000 or 4,200 a gm. The DC also ordered the general manager of the mill, Surinder Pal, to get the boilers of the mill repaired to run it independently in case of failure of the power plant in future. Jalandhar, January 19 Bathinda police conducted a raid at a house in Guru Nanak Nagar here on Thursday morning, and arrested a person identified as Amarjit Nagra. Division Number 1 SHO Jitender Kumar said a few days ago three smugglers were arrested by the Bathinda police and a huge cache of weapons and heroin was recovered from their possession. The SHO said the vehicle used in the crime was in the name of Amarjit Nagra, therefore, the Bathinda police were looking out for him. “The local police and a team of Bathinda police conducted a raid at the residence of Amarjit Nagra today morning, and arrested him from there. One person sustained injuries from sharp-edged weapons in the incident. The police said FIR AGAINST UNKNOWN PERSONS LODGED the two groups first had a fight at Adarsh Nagar Chaupati and when persons of one of the two groups came for treatment at the Civil Hospital, the others followed them, and they again fought at the hospital.
